Brother of 2007 recruit Aaron Nagel and could be one of the most sought after prospects from the Midwest in 2008.

Wow when I see 6'4 205 as a sophomore in high school, I think of a 6'5 225+ terror at linebacker. You'd think ND would be in the drivers seat for this one, but perhaps he would want to get out from under his brothers shadow?

I hope not. He is said to be the better propsect of the two.

Very true. I read an article that said that he grew up a big ND fan (like his brother), but that he would make his decision for him, or something like that. Do you think having his older brother on board would help sway his decision? That'd be awesome to have two brothers playing LB.

I would like to say yes, but you just never know.

OAK FOREST -- The story line was a rather familiar one -- Nagel leads Lemont High School to another big victory.

There was only one problem. It wasn't Notre Dame-bound Aaron who helped the Indians to a victory over Oak Forest on Friday.

Rather, it was his brother, Brett.

Brett Nagel took control of matters for Lemont after Aaron left with a leg injury in the first quarter and helped the Indians to a 21-0 first-half lead en route to a 31-20 win in a showdown of 3-0 teams in the South Suburban Blue Division.

The junior quarterback rushed for 108 yards on 15 carries and scored on runs of 50- and 9-yards to help the Indians (6-2, 4-0) to their sixth straight win plus a share of the SSC Blue title.

"When Aaron got hurt and they started cheering, everyone got fired up on our team," Brett Nagel said. "We came out and played the best part of our game. Our line, led by Dave Molk, was making big holes like they do every week and everyone was running hard.

"We all come together and play as a team, offense and defense. We don't want to share the conference championship ,so we have to play even better next week against Bremen."

Aaron Nagel rushed for 43 yards on 10 carries before going down late in the first quarter.

One play later, Bobby Earnest (10 carries for 60 yards) went 13 yards over the right side to collect the first score for the Indians with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter.

After the Bengals (6-2, 3-1) lost the ball on downs at Lemont's 41 early in the second quarter, the visitors needed just three plays to strike again.

Brett Nagel burst 50 yards down the right side and after an extra point kick by Ryan Dunne, Lemont took a 14-0 lead with 10:36 left in the half.

Later in the half, the Indians got the ball at the Bengal 42 and needed just two plays to score again as Nagel went in from nine yards to make it 21-0 with 3:02 left before the break.

Oak Forest finally got on the scoreboard with 1:12 left in the first half when Micky Nicholas (10-of-20, 97 yards, 3 interceptions, 2 TDs) connected with Jake Gloodt for a 34-yard pass.

The Bengals pulled to within 21-14 just 2:21 into the second half when Nicholas ran 32-yards for another touchdown.

On their next series, the Tigers nearly tied things up when Gloodt just missed connecting with Julian Ross, who had gotten well past Lemont's secondary on a surprise pass play.

Lemont increased its lead to 28-14 with 1:37 left in the third when Nick Carvell (8-55 rushing) scored on a 29-yard run.

Oak Forest kept the pressure on, however, when Nicholas tossed a shovel pass to Ben Kessens and he went 18 yards for a score to make it 28-20 on the first play of the fourth quarter.

But the Indians ended the drama when Dunne hit a 37-yard field goal with 5:26 left.

Brett Nagel stopped the next Bengal series with an interception, but Earnest fumbled the ball right back the next play.

Earnest quickly made amends for that by picking off Nicholas on the ensuing play for his second interception.

The Indians rushed for 300 yards on 50 attempts behind its formidable offensive line that's led by Michigan-bound Dave Molk and includes Nick Palermo, Trevor Rothstein, Jake Urbanski and Graham Pocic.

Lemont's defense limited the Bengals to 240 total yards with just 143 coming on the ground.

Trevor Newton had a pair of sacks for the Indians. Ryan Fejedelem, Molk and Pocic also contributed sacks for Lemont.

"I thought Brett did a great job of leading the team," said Lemont coach Eric Michaelsen. "He really put the team on his back and stepped up tonight. Being up by three scores was good, but we knew Oak Forest wasn't going to give up.

"They scored at the end of the half and the beginning of the third quarter, and it was like 'Whoa'.
"One of the things that I'm most proud of about our program is that we don't allow each other to use excuses, no matter what happens. You'll never hear anyone say that 'Dang it, Aaron got hurt.'"

Nagel rallies Lemont to title

Seven weeks after both had struggled to a combined 1-3 record, Lemont and Bremen met Friday night in Midlothain to see which team would complete the turnaround with a South Suburban Blue championship.

The title belongs to Lemont after the Indians scored on their first three possessions of the third quarter to turn a 10-6 deficit into a 26-10 victory.

"I don't think we came out to play in the beginning," junior quarterback Brett Nagel said. "We all got fired up at halftime. We realized it was for our conference championship."

Lemont (7-2, 5-0) spread out its offensive front in the second half and created running room for Nagel and Robert Earnest, whose 33-yard run to Bremen's 17-yard line preceded a 16-yard TD strike from Nagel to Sean Brickey three plays into the half.

Nagel raised the lead to 19-10 on a 3-yard keeper—set up four plays earlier by William Hayes' interception—and Earnest completed the scoring with a 20-yard run with 4 minutes 25 seconds left in the third quarter.

Bremen (6-3, 3-2) scored twice in the last two minutes of the first half for a 10-6 lead. Richard Courtney returned a fumble to Lemont's 2, and Tim Cazley scored on the next play. Arturo Macias kicked a 27-yard field goal to end the first half.

"We were kind of upset at halftime," Nagel said. "We knew we were a better team than that."

Lemont played without running back/safety Aaron Nagel, who suffered a hyperextended right knee last week. He hopes to be ready for next weekend's playoff opener.

LEMONT -- Robert Earnest, Brett Nagel, Nick Simone and Nick Carvell provided the punch in Lemont's Aaron Nagel-less offense Friday, destroying Marshall 47-0 in the Class 5A playoff opener. The Indians (8-2) missed their Notre Dame-bound senior running back/safety, but they didn't need him against Marshall (7-3).Lemont travels to Woodstock Marian or Montini for the second round of the playoffs next weekend. Nagel injured his knee in the eighth game of the season against Oak Forest. He didn't play last week in Lemont's win over Bremen.Earnest, a junior, scored two touchdowns, junior quarterback Brett Nagel scored two touchdowns and senior running back Carvell also scored two touchdowns as the Indians rolled up their 47-point margin of victory in the first half. Simone scored one touchdown.

"It was a team effort," said Earnest, who scored from the 4 on Lemont's first possession to put the Indians ahead 6-0 and finished with 64 yards on eight carries. "Our offensive line is just huge. I give them all the credit in the world."Earnest's second touchdown, a 31-yard run, came at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter and put Lemont ahead 40-0.

Brett Nagel showed his prowess as a running quarterback by scoring on a 55-yard scamper and a 6-yard plunge. The first touchdown run came on a play that looked like it was designed to give him both a passing and a running option. The second was just a straight keeper.

Carvell scored on runs of 31 yards and 20 yards, respectively, to help Lemont build a 19-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. He finished with 82 yards on 8 carries. He also injured his knee in the game and may miss next week's playoff game.

We were well-prepared, and we came out and we played hard," Lemont coach Eric Michaelsen said. "We wanted to play a physical game and negate some of their speed and some of the really great players they have."The Indians showed something as far as playmaking ability as well.

"With Aaron out, we've been sharing that position (running back), and Bobby gives us a nice little change of pace because he's really fast. Nick Carvell is also fast, but he's a physical runner as well," Michaelsen said. "The offensive line did a nice job. We wanted to come out and run it right at these guys, and the offensive line was able to make some holes."Lemont's defense suffocated the Commandos. The Indians intercepted five passes, two by linebacker Willie Hayes. Lemont held Marshall to minus-24 yards rushing in the game. The Indians surrendered only seven first downs."My middle linebackers did a nice job, Hayes and (Gordie) Kickels. My defensive backs (Kyle) Jorgensen and (Ryan) Buttney also did a nice job," Michaelsen said.Michaelsen is optimistic that Aaron Nagel will return to action next week."I'm hoping he will be able to play next week," Michaelsen said."He's working his tail off trying to get back."

How about Tate's brother as well. Golden says he will be better than him. That would be odd, 2 pairs of brothers that are studs.

Brett will probably be a 4* recruit, and that aside, a great addition to this class.

I don't see why he wouldn't get an offer.

Rumors coming out of the Junior combine this week is that Brett said that if was offered, he would commit.

How about Reuland's brother, Nagel's brother AND Tate's brother? That is odd. I'll take Steve Smith's brother this year. All of these guys will be offered and would be even if their brother's were not Irish (or Trojan).

Ever had a Filer in the middle of your Nagels? Run it between the Nagels. A QB sack being called a Nagel sandwich. Anyone from SoCal remember Naugels? That place was the best. They were bought by Del Taco if I recall.

If younger Tate is a tailback and Golden is a WR...hmmm. Notre Dames has some nice Tates.

What can we do with Reuland? I got nothing.

well ND has offered 2 or3 TE's so I don't think Reuland will get an offer. Nagel I could see but Tate was only a soph. this year so you would have to wait another year for him.

The coaches told Ron Nagel, Aaron and Brett's dad, they project him as an OLB but would not rule out TE for Brett.

Northwestern is going to pursue Brett pretty hard.

I know that he worked out with the WRs at the AAA Jr. Combine, as did a few other TEs like Austin Holt. Anyone have any word on what his favorite position is?

Has no preference. You know how the typical answer goes.

Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Iowa have offered.

No they haven't. I wonder since they know he would verbal to ND, they are taking their time with him and going after bigger names. If those don't work out, then he will get his "dream" offer.

I hope this isn't the case. We were fortunate to grab last minute dream school types like Brian Smith. I don't this (read: I'm hoping) Weis will not repeat the only the elite recruiting strategy.

You would think that they have learned from their mistakes last year. However, it is still very early in the process. If he hasn't been offered by May or mid-summer, then I think they are holding out for bigger names. Remember that the 08 LB class looks pretty loaded and ND already has 4 or 5 offers out to them. They still haven't offered Jon Major yet and he seems to be a national recruit.

I'm sure the situation is under control.

Ron Nagel, Aaron and Brett's father, stays involved in the process and spoke at length with the coaches at the Junior Day.

Keep in mind, Brett wasn't really all that interested in ND to begin with. Junior Day swayed him a bit.

Northwestern will be tough to beat. Nagel is a very good fit for their scheme on both O and D. They'll recruit him hard.

I have read that Brett said during the AAA combine if ND offered that they will be very tough to beat. This is from an interview that he did with a reporter. I can't remember but it was rivals or IE.
