Michigan AD Jim Hackett just said today that he's working on a long-term extension to keep Harbaugh in Ann Arbor for a very long time and that they'll have news on it soon.

He's already making like $5.7 million a year and he has 6 years left on his deal, so my guess is he's probably going to be one of the highest paid coaches in college in that $7-8 mil a range and his new buyout is going to be massive. Otherwise....why sign any extension?

You are fooling yourself if you don't think the NFL will come after him strong in the near future. And you are fooling yourself if you think Harbough doesn't believe he has unfinished business in the NFL.

Just enjoy the ride for the next few years.

Sports journalist John U. Bacon is a pretty plugged in guy in Ann Arbor. He actually knows Jim Harbaugh, has known him since they were in high school together, he knows Jim's parents and siblings as well. He seems to think Harbaugh will retire at Michigan.

I don't know what's going to happen, who really knows? Of course the NFL will always come after him, they guy is still young-ish and is a hell of a coach.

My point is, if he sings a long-term extension he's going to be around for more than just a few years. Otherwise, why sign? I don't think Hackett would sign him to an extension if he thought he was going to leave in 2 years, and any AD halfway decent at his job would make a pretty hefty buyout in any new contract that'd make it harder to part ways with the coach.

Nobody knows what the future holds. Wouldn't surprise me to see Jim go back to the NFL one day. Wouldn't surprise me to see him stay for a long time. Nobody knows what the hell Jim Harbaugh is going to do. I don't think he even knows. Dude marches to the beat of his own drum.

Harbaugh really is Bo's disciple, winning plenty of games but never the ones that mattered.

This is rich coming from our fan base whose 2015 team best win was a 2 pt Clemson loss. I don't like Michigan either but lets not throw stones man.

To be fair, Michigan wasn't exactly sitting pretty with quality wins in 2015 either. Their best win was against a horrible Florida team.

If a coach came to ND and couldn't win an NC in 20 years, would we idolize that coach? We don't idolize the 2015 team even though we respect the accomplishment, because we're ND and our expectations are at the highest level. We freak out because we haven't won an NC since 88. Michigan hasn't won a consensus NC since the 40s! Kelly hasn't won an NC yet and all we can do is complain about it.

The point is, Harbaugh blew it in his biggest games and got blown the fuck out by his rival. ND beat their rival and put up better performances against better opponents. I'm not impressed by his ability to scrape by MN or blow it against MSU. Are you?
