I don't think you could even get Chip Kelly to interview at ND, let alone take the job, IF it were offered to him. The first time you tell Chip Kelly that his starting QB is suspended for the season for cheating on school work, he would stroke out.

Didn't Chip expel his starting QB one year without missing a beat?

Lame Kitten??? Seems he's turning the corner under Satan. OK, maybe I just want to see Layla in a blue and gold short dress.

This... IIRC, I feared getting run out of the thread when I predicted 10 wins last preseason.... For the record, I don't think BK is "elite", but I do think he's about as good as ND is going to get. EVER. And I do think he's the best chance for an ND natty in the next 5-6 years. The stars will need to align, we'll have to luck out with a few five star southern boys on the recruiting trail, need some luck on the field, and a new defensive scheme (where DLs don't drop back, and DBs and LBs can play without understanding astrophysics), but it can be done IMO with BK.

ND fans thinking that we can NEVER EVER do better than Kelly is the problem here.

Settling for someone whom nobody thinks is an elite coach, is the issue. But I doubt most people thought that Lou was elite and look what he did at ND. He might be the best ND coach I ever see in my life, but I do not think most people thought he was going to come into ND and get done what he did within three years, considering the way Gerry left things at ND.

Am I saying that I think that ND should absolutely try to find a way to get rid of Kelly? Certainly not!

Do I think that he is the BEST head coach ND could EVER get? Certainly not.

That is why Jack is paid the big bucks, because he was able to go out and find an under-the-radar coach in Kelly that has helped turn the program around, but I do not think that ND is going to do any better under Kelly and would be imprudent NOT to keep their eye on the coaches available, ones who have many of the same traits Kelly does, while being able to exhibit intangibles that Kelly does not.

Hell, I do not think that Swinney is a better coach than Kelly, but he went from WRs coach to interim head coach to a Power Five coach of an undefeated team that has won more games in a season than any coach in CLEM history. So there is plenty of evidence that you just need to be vigilant, always, because there are plenty of unearthed gems out there.

So do not think that Kelly is THE BEST Notre Dame can ever do. He is the best we could get AT THE TIME, but because of the way Kelly has turned the program around, I think that Notre Dame is a much more attractive job and would be able to garner even more hats thrown into the ring, IF Notre Dame wanted to launch a coaching search.

I just do not see why anyone would just assume ND can NEVER do better, EVER.

ND has done so before and could do so again.

I don't really think anyone's saying that Notre Dame could never do better than Brian Kelly. And I'd damn well hope Swarbrick "keeps his eye on the coaches available," for when Kelly inevitably retires or leaves. He'd be crazy not to. (For what it's worth, Kelly was hardly plucked out of obscurity. He'd just taken Cincy to a New Year's bowl game and was probably the hottest coach on the market that offseason).

But at this point in the hiring cycle, plucking a better coach out of thin air - like 2010 Brian Kelly - would be hard. The best guys have either just taken new jobs or just extended long-term deals. That's how it goes when you're hiring for college jobs in January.
And in his six years Kelly has done a pretty good job as head coach at Notre Dame (an excellent job of building a program, a good job of gameday Xs and Os). So if you're going to push him out - say after next season - you'd better be damn sure you can get the guy you think can do it better.

That's all.

Things were different at ND in the late 1980s. Recruiting, academics, the schools relationship with the football program....BGIF has some great posts in the past about this a and why what BK has to deal with is much different from when ND was in its heyday.I wish I could find them. Anyway, a HC has much more things to deal with at ND than at other schools. I would not expect the Saban's or Myer's of the CFB interested in taking the job.

I think if Saban or Meyer were here their record would be about the same as BK's and no one would call them elite. The requirements would hamstring them as well. Put BK at Bama or OSU and I think his record is better.
