Report: Tapes could confirm Bush received gifts
Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- The existence of taped conversations between Reggie Bush or members of his family and an investor in a failed sports marketing agency could confirm the New Orleans Saints running back received cash and gifts while playing for Southern California, Yahoo.com reported Wednesday.

A federal investigation into extortion claims by Bush and his family revealed the existence of the taped conversations, according to the Yahoo.com report.

The U.S. District Attorney's office in San Diego has issued grand jury subpoenas to multiple witnesses in the probe, Yahoo.com reported. According to a copy of a subpoena obtained by Yahoo, at least one of the witnesses was asked to hand over "any recordings in your possession of conversations between Lloyd Lake and Reggie Bush, Denise Griffin or LaMar Griffin."

Lake, who founded a sports marketing agency in hopes of landing Bush as its first client, is the subject of a grand jury probe into the extortion claims. Denise Griffin is Bush's mother, and LaMar Griffin is Bush's stepfather.

Yahoo.com, citing unidentified sources, reported LaMar Griffin spoke with federal investigators in the spring of 2006 and acknowledged the existence of the tapes.

When asked in the past about the allegations of receiving inappropriate extra benefits, Bush has insisted that he and his family did nothing wrong.

Multiple sources told Yahoo.com that Lake made the tapes in late 2005 to protect his financial investment if Bush backed out of a deal to sign with New Era Sports & Entertainment, founded by Lake and San Diego businessman Michael Michaels. In January 2005, Bush signed with agent Joel Segal and marketing agent Mike Ornstein.

On Jan. 12, 2007, Lake's mother, Barbara Gunner, testified before a grand jury, according to the Yahoo.com report, that she had heard portions of tapes made by her son, in which LaMar Griffin states Bush intended to repay New Era Sports "their money," as well as for a car purchased for him.

"I respectfully decline to comment on the media frenzy regarding Reggie Bush, his family and his college career," David Cornwell, Bush's attorney, told Yahoo on Wednesday.

Lake told Yahoo in August 2006 that he contributed a portion of the cash and gifts allegedly given to Bush and his family as part of an agreement to represent the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner when he signed an NFL contract. In September, Yahoo.com reported Ornstein also supplied Bush and his family with gifts while he was still at USC.

According to Yahoo.com, nearly $280,000 in cash, rent and gifts was allegedly given to Bush and his family.

The Pac-10 Conference and the NCAA are investigating whether Bush or his family broke NCAA rules and compromised his eligibility during the 2004 and '05 seasons by taking extra benefits.

If Bush is found to have violated NCAA rules, USC, which won a national title in '04 and played for the '05 championship, could be sanctioned.

Also, the Heisman Trophy Trust requires players be in good standing with the NCAA to be eligible for the award given to college football's top player. If Bush is ruled ineligible by the NCAA, he could be in danger of having his Heisman taken away.

While I would have to say that it would be nice to see those USC punks get slapped by the NCAA, I would also have to say that it indirectly hurts Notre Dame football somewhat if they are sanctioned. I can't stand USC, but I would rather beat them with their best out there than to beat them without it. Just a thought.

Yeah I would like to beat them while they are on top, but would be even better to steal away a couple of recruits that had ND in their final list of schools. Besides they wouldn't just fall apart that quickly, it would take a least 2 mediocre recruiting classes.

I on the other hand wouldn't mind kicking them while they are down (not saying they are down now). I don't care if they are .500; it's always nice to beat USC. They got to do that to ND when ND had Ty.

Although it seems almost impossible right now i would really like to kick their ass next year. They wull probabally be the preseason #1 and be undefeated when they come to south bend. How sweet would it be taking the national title hopes right away from the trojans next year.... But as of right now, all i can do is wish/dream.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't mind kicking them when they are down (if they ever are), I'd would just rather kick 'em while they are on top. Like 2007 when they will probably be #1.

If this ends up being this bad, does the DAC ask Bush to give up the Heisman? Does the ONE NC USC won get vacated?

The possibilities are endless and delicious.

If you were the parent of a kid and the coaches from USC come in for a home visit would you ask about this, and what would you do? Forget being a ND fan on this one.

If he is ruled ineligible then they will take it back, since you have to be in good standing with the NCAA to win the award. If it can be proven he was taking shit in 04 than a NC would be stripped. It is funny, bush might lose his award for taking gifts, yet oj still has his after killing two people.:twocents:

Reggie Bush can't shake allegations of inproper benefits.

I hope this really is true and that it comes back to bite Reggie "Push" Bush and Usc in the ass. NOTHING would make me happier to see this happen and have Usc put on sanctions and maybe we might get some players to come here instead of there.

I hate USC. I sincerly hope this makes some impact on the recruting season. Maybe the threat of sanctions will scare some kids away. Too bad somebody paid Reggie's family because he probably would have left and gone to the NFL a year sooner and we would have had a huge win. He is the only reason ND lost that game.

He wasn't eligible to go pro yet before his actual decision.

Ok the thing that I think is really being missed here is that USC technically did nothing wrong, he received gifts from an ageent based on his future earnings potential, but from an agent on a personal level. Unless they link this to the staff at USC somehow then I don't think this affects anything, the Poodle unfortunately did nothing wrong that we know of. Yeah he might be stripped of the the Heisman and they might have their title taken away (which I doubt). But this isn't really a corrupt school issue its more of a corrupt or greedy kid not wanting to wait for what he had coming his way.IMO.

The reporter that broke the original story for yahoo sports said there are sources that confirm the RB coach at USC had knowledge of the Bush Family extra benefits. USC had denied this. I think USC is going down in a big way. THe NCAA wont take action until the law suit between the Bush family and other party has concluded. THis is going to get ugly for USC but it will take some time for the ball to get rolling on this.

My only question is just because the coach knew about it does that make it a NCAA rules infraction since it wasn't the school giving gifts? I hope USC does get hammered if they find wrong doing, but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I'm pretty sure your wrong on this. The coach is ultimately responsible for everything that goes on with the players if it affects the team, ......... it is a NCAA violation

Absolutely a violation. If any member of the administration/coaching staff knows of a violation and doesnt report it, that is a serious violation and to make it worse for USC the administration met with the NCAA and denied any knowledge of the extra benefits. Big trouble if this source comes up big.

amazing, a player from USC getting something under the table. who would have thought? come on, it's been happening for years there. remember jarret getting free rent?? he served one game. for thousands of dollars in rent, what a bargain.

usc will weasle out of this one too. pete is a sly one. he should really watch over his players a bit.

$280K is a ton of money. we'll see what happens. loss of a NC, loss of a heisman???? that would be a first, i think.
