Not like there is not anything else to talk about but here is the list of eligible players to return for a 5th year and contribute to our national title team in 2008:

LB Maurice Crum, Jr.
CB Terrail Lambert
CB Leo Ferrine
LB Anthony Vernaglia
WR Darrin Bragg
RB Junior Jabbie
Long Snapper J.J. Jansen

Any of these guys worth talking about other than Crum and Lambert?

If it is truly going to be a rebuilidng year and we are more than likely gonna lose 4+ games next year, I just assume start the younger players and position ourselves for a title run in 2008.

yea, but it would still be nice to have guys like Crum and Lambert around. because both will hopefully still be around for 08.

and a year as a back-up instead of being thrown directly into the fire can be very good for young guys' development. I'm happy with the 5th year seniors hopefully coming back as well as the few seniors to be that actually play.

A bit of senior leadership is always a good thing.

Leo Ferrine still beat out Walls this year for time, so having him back is better than not IMO
Anthony Vernaglia can still make a huge impact the guy was a 4 star athlete and is a burner at LB, people want speed...he has it

Junior Jabbie is a huge question mark, another 4 star player that has laid low for a bit, could still make an impact but I doubt it at RB

J.J. Jansen, from my understanding doesn't have a scholarship (unless he just got one this year), he is a hell of a long snapper though and again, having a good one is better than replacing a good one

As for Darrin Bragg...I really don't expect much from him

I still think Justin Brown, who is not listed, is worth talking about. He was pretty good when he wasn't injured. and who knows with Ferrine.

he left the team last year, but not the school. he is now back on the team. he saw time on special teams and had a number of special teams tackles.

Wow. I'm just happy to see you back on the board Jigga! Of course, two letters and a period aren't really the epitome of eloquence of the Jigga we all miss, but still, even if no one else cares, I'm glad to see a post from you.

Right now, I'd agree with you, none of those guys are worth talking about, but who knows? People change, DC's come and go, and just maybe one of them could turn out to be a surprise. I'm not banking on it, but you never know. So, to the original poster, no, none of them are worth talking about NOW, but the future remains to be seen.

I think the real question is which one of those 5th year seniors will have their fingers sized for championship rings at the end of 2008. Cant blame a guy for daydreaming can you? Go Irish!

LB Maurice Crum, Jr.
CB Terrail Lambert
CB Leo Ferrine 66:22 (Walls had 61:07)
LB Anthony Vernaglia 26:19 (Toryan Smith had 23:25)
WR Darrin Bragg ?????
RB Junior Jabbie 22:30 (Aldridge 18:59)
Long Snapper J.J. Jansen Specialist

You might not see much of these guys in 2007 let alone 2008.

Ferrine was hurt to start the year but beat out Walls when he returned, Vernaglia is an OLB, not MLB like Smith, so comparing their minutes is pretty pointless, they both played around the same amount of mop up duty (though I do expect Smith to start this year with Crum moving back to Apache)

Jabbie was a solid special teams player, but don't see him making an impact at RB....but you never know

J.J. Jansen, specialists are important....thats why NFL teams pay these guys 100's of thousands to do what they do

I hope Jansen returns. He had about 50 some minutes of PT, thus I put specialist because the bulk of his appearances were on special teams.

Hurt or healthy, Leo Ferrine is worse than Richardson was when Richardson was struggling. Terrible. Walls, McNeil, Gray and Tate in tow with Lambert back for a fifth make him expendable. Wooden and Lambert keep him off the field this year.

I've seen Vernaglia three times live in the last year....the Spring Game, Stanford and Army games. All three times, he spent most of the day getting pancaked on his ass by second string garbage in mop up play. Either he should be at safety or he's just a bad linebacker because he spends most of the time getting jacked up. If anything is pointless, it is has been his career to this point.

Judging by who is returning for 5th years this season, I doubt we'll see many of these guys again after 07. Crum and Lambert would be the two that have the strongest possibilities to return. The rest of them will have to show some type of life the way Joe Brockington did this year.

I saw Walls fall down, trip over himself and look utterly horrible.....however, like Vernaglia I expect him to improve

I can live with a true Freshman falling down... Vernaglia is a bucket of unfulfilled promise.

And he has 2 more years to fulfill them, Stovall was a bucket of unfulfilled promises for his first 3 years

Better late than never to improve for Vernaglia. This year was supposed to be now or never for him in a lot of people's eyes, especially since linebacker was so wide open when Hoyte and Mays gone. This was a kid that Pete Carroll was after until hours before Signing Day. Either he got lost in the shuffle or is bad. I doubt it is both.

Walls is a true freshman. His play in the second half against Michigan State makes his glass half full compared to Vernaglia.

Stovall had a bad coach...and in his first year of a good offense he took off. Vernaglia has been out from under the Ty regime for a couple years and still is getting a lot of sit down time.

Fer chrissakes, they moved TT to LB because a FULL-TIME LB like Vernaglia could not cut it.

I was flat out disappointed by his effort in the spring game. He got run over constantly, play after play. Then in late minutes in actual games, same thing.

He won't beat out Crum or Brockington. Might play behind them, but that's about it.

Crum is probably the most underrated player on the team.

Wait...coaching is why Stovall turned it around.....seems Vernaglia had a pretty horrible defensive cordinator....could be he breaks out with a new coach and scheme...just like Stovall did

Yes they did move TT to LB, because he is an incredible talent, now they moved him back to RB because that is where he will contribute the most...

Keep crapping on the kid, he can still bust his but and prove himself...he has 2 years

And if we do switch to a 3-4....then what...

And I don't think he beats out Crum or Brockington (doesn't play Brock's position anyway)...however he could beat out Smith, keeping Crum in the middle and Putting Vernaglia at Apache....if we don't move to a 3-4....heck, we may not even have an apache next year....

Things are changing on defense, Vernaglia isn't out of the mis

We'd better call Irish Illustrated.
They have Vernaglia backing up Brockington on their depth chart. Blue and Gold has Mitchell Thomas as the #2 behind both Brockington and Crum, for what its worth.

I went with the one two deep out there I could find Vernaglia on. I figure if he's athletic enough, he could be interchangable to the weak or strong side....try to win one of the two jobs maybe?

If they have the proper pieces in place to run a 3-4, I hope they do it. Whole different discussion that we'll find out soon enough.

I thought Crum performed admirably at MLB, but it isn't the best fit for him.

I hoped Ambrose Wooden would have made Mike Richardson type strides, but his injury prevented him from doing so. Lambert then stepped in and stepped up himself. Wooden is one guy I think could surpise in 2007.

I expect to see,
Apache Crum
MLB T. Smith
SLB Brockington

However....Vernaglia could move to MLB, he could move to Apache and keep crum in the middle...I don't see him taking SLB

He could be explosive as a blitzing OLB in the 3-4 with him and Crum on the outside, T. Smith and Brockington in the Middle

I'm just saying don't give up on the guy......he wouldn't be the first guy to break out his rJr year
