Now that Weis is locked up for ten years, we might as well get used to speculation about the assistants on the staff.

I was fishing around BGI on the Rockne Roundtable and a poster notified us that an Eastern Seaboard Programming Network wrtier is reporting that Temple is talking to both Tom Clements and John Latina about the head coaching position for 2006.

I have no idea why I'm even posting this other than to see what everyone else may have to say. Quite frankly, I don't see Latina taking this job or any other. I believe this staff will see things through until an NC is won.

But they are all going to be hot commodities as long as ND enjoys success.

At this point, I'm not worried about this report one bit.

I saw this and don't think there's much to it. Primarily for the fact that it's Temple. In fact, I'm kind of surprised that Clements is interested in the Temple job. His name has been floated for a number of higher profile jobs in recent years (I even heard it during the last ND search). I can't believe that he's so desperate to get out of Buffalo that he would consider the Temple job. There have to be other opportunities available to him.

Regarding Latina, I think it's just a matter of time before ND loses some assistants. Weis brought in a lot of great assistants with a ton of experience. Minter, for example, used to be a head coach in D-1. I read somewhere that Haywood said he came from Texas for the opportunity of learning from Weis. He will be a head coach one day soon. It's inevitable that ND will lose some assistants, but as long as Charlie stays the program will be fine. Think of all of the references you hear about the "Walsh coaching tree" or the "Parcells coaching tree". Great coaches beget great coaches and it will eventually happen with ND also.

Weis has great connections. He'll be able to replace people quickly. Coach Vaas was a perfect example.

Haywood is the hottest commodity on the staff right now. With 3-4 years under Weis and his recruiting abilities, he is going to be successful at some point.

If there's one thing we have learned about Weis, it's that he has a plan and he doesn't flinch. He had the majority of this staff in mind long before he had a head coaching job. You know darn well that he has a plan to fill any opening on this staff. And at this point, hot assistants are going to flock to work for him.

We need to face it, with success, the staff will be raided over the years. And I believe coach Weis is the kind of guy that will not only support upward movement by his assistants, he will do what he can to promote them. Doing this is not only the right thing to do, but it will also attract coaching talent to Notre Dame for years to come.

I don't see anyone with any sense coaching at Temple.

Assuming it's true, Latina's choice would be A. asst. coach at a premier University with a great tradition, great future located in an idyllic Midwest setting or. B. Head coach for an awful team with a horrible tradition, no chance of every winning located what is possibly the worst location of any major US university.

I think he picks 'A'. Someone will make him an offer he can't refuse but Temple is not that school.

Isn't Temple like very close to dropping down to Div. 1-AA?

They should. So should about 25 other schools.

They do it for the $$$ and they get killed because of it. Then no one wants to go play there.

There are far too many D I-A schools in my book.

They are moving to the MAC, which should fill most of their schedules. Play sacrificial lamb to a BCS school or two and fill the schedule out with a 1AA cream puff or two and it could be interesting, if they get the right coach.

In their defense, while they are bad, they've played the toughest schedule in America in my book.

Clements may be putting his name out to generate interest for a hiring at a later date. He is a Pennsylvania guy, so talking with Temple would give him some exposure. PSU would be perfect for him. I would certainly like to see him do well.
