The argument always seems to be bowls versus playoffs. But what sort of playoff are we talking about exactly? Lots of formats to choose from.

If they ever did go to a playoff, my ideal system would be to shorten the reg season to 11 games, eliminate the conference championship week, then run a full tilt 64 team tourney with a selection EXACTLY like the basketball version. Start it around thanksgiving and culminate it on the 1st of January - no more of this January 8th BS.

Otherwise keep it how it is. I dont want some chicken shit tourney with 4-6 teams so I can hear the 3 teams behind them cry about it for a month. Full boat or BCS game - no in between.

Can I vote for the pre-BCS system? At least it had tradition and didn't play at being something it wasn't.

It should be the old BCS System that had

SOS
Quality Wins
Compter polls
AP Poll
Coaches poll

By far the best system for determining who had the best season...(I wouldn't mind if they added a Quality loss section either)

Holly crap you want it to be like the NFL and College Basketball, so the regular season doesn't matter at all so you can go to Bed Bath and Beyond with the Wife on saturdays

It wouldnt be that hard to squeeze a few playoff games. Something to fill that 40-50 day gap before the traditional bowls we have now.

the major, and i mean major hurdle that the bowl system will have to overcome will be the sponsorships. like it or not, these sponsors throw a shit ton of moolah to the NCAA for these games.

As for the play off, i dont think it would be very entertaining to see one game sponsored by ditech, one game sponsored by cadillac, one game sponsored by tinactin.etc.... for 64 games. i hate the commercialism as it is right now and that would probably drive me to spend an eternity in hell. imagine the commercials during one these types of games where the game will probably be overshadowed by all of the stinking adverts and onscreen displays. disgusting.

I like the playoff scenario but, it all falls to crap once the sponsors are involved.

I like the Bowl system because 32 colleges can boost at the end that they are winners . This helps their recruiting and lets about 3200 players feel they were winners . It also give everyone something to argue about till the next season. One champion give only about a 100 players and a few fans the feeling they are winners.

division II and non-scholarship Div III teams do it with no problem. I cant see why it would be so hard for Div 1 primas to do it.

DII schools don't have the same issues and responsibilities as D1 schools...Interviews, TV hype etc etc etc...

If you love DII so much become a fan of it.....Oh wait...its boring as hell

Actually, Im a supporter of the BCS - in my twisted world, I actually think its the smartest system of all. Playoff systems are actually ridiculous to me, playoff systems in the pro sports usually reward geography over any other factor if you think about it. how stupid is that? Example, this years MLB champion had the 15th best record and wouldve been a 4th place team in the AL Central.

Im just saying, for purely selfish reasons, if you go playoff then make it a balls to the wall playoff - I want Florida vs Old Dominion in round 1 - dont give me this "plus 1" crap or any other ESPN think tank solution.

i liked the old way too john, but the way it is now can't be beat.I just don't like all the games being cluttered up on jan.1.

I might wouldn't mind having the conference tie-ins again(and somewhat it's still that way),but the games spread out thru the week.

I just think if there was a playoff in div.I and the games were played on a neutral site they wouldn't draw as much money as a bowl game. Why would I want to go to a first round playoff that notre dame is in when I could wait and go to the national championship game.
Even if the top seed had home field advantage it's still not a season ticket for holders.

I agree, the other divisions do it with success, but the attendance is a failure compared to bowl games and I know you know that, but that's just the corporations, sponsors, and anyone else that dips their hand in the pie speaking.

Some of these bowls suck. I dislike a lot of these tie ins like Big 10 #7 vs Mac #2 and crap like that. Man those games are hard to watch. There are no natural rivalries, it has a exhibition game feel to it.

Could they maybe eliminate 10 bowls and give more credence to the others?

I hear that the peach bowl or chik-fil-a or whatever is damn near ready to crack into BCS ice. They are paying out almost BCS cash right now.

I think that's the goal,to end up with 20 BCS bowls in the future :)

Its called Finals

Complete and utter bullshit. Winter sports have finals too, but a women's basketball team doesn't get $13 million for going to the Rose Bowl.

Final exams take a 4-5 day school week at best. Who takes finals for a month?

This is excuse is lame and translated in suit talk, all of their answers mean "money." University presidents will have a playoff when they want one and right now they don't. There is no other reason, bullshit or otherwise.

I agree the reason is not valid... but money isn't either... playoffs would bring just as much money into the right hands and last I checked wild card rounds and growing playoff fields weren't put there for balance and fairness...

It doesn't matter when they take them. They're usually in December within the first couple of weeks after Thanksgiving. That isn't the point.

Finals is a bogus excuse by university presidents. The fact they can say it with a straight face is rather insulting. I-A is the only level of football that doesn't have a playoff.

It's a bullshit soundbyte and nothing more. You rarely hear them mention it anymore because when they initially did, they got torn a new one for it.

lol... yeah it's a bs point... but there are valid ones, on both sides, that hold the overall debate these days...no?

One of the reasons given against a playoff is that the bowl games are great. What kind of reasoning is that? One of the announcers at this year's Fiesta Bowl gave that reason, that the Fiesta Bowl was such a great game. Why wouldn't the quarterfinals, or semifinals games be great games?

64 teams? Oh please. There is nothing "full boat" about that. That is simply copying BB.

True "Full Boat" would be all 120 teams.

I support 4.

Yeah. New Mexico and San Jose State really pumped my nads.

Most of these schools either lose money or break even on these December bowls. It's like your city getting chosen to host the Olympics.

And just about every school has mid-terms that are just as important, or close to it. But you don't see people whining about how they had to play a game around mid-terms. And let's be realistic here. I stidied a decent amount for my finals in college, but it wasn't like I needed a solid 10 hours of studying for each one. Xavier isn't quite ND's standards, but I wasn't an athlete either.

The bowls would not disappear, the top4 would change...that's all.

You want to bet on that?

You really think they would stay with a top 4...

You think the Bowls would carry any weight if there was a playoff????

Sorry guys you bring a playoff into the mix and you destroy College football as we know it...

But December will be exciting
