I've seen all of the PSU games this year etiher in person or on the tube. My synopsis of this PSU team is quite simple. Play ball control, make just enough plays on both sides of the ball, don't give up the big play, and for God sakes, "Don't make any mistakes!"
I live in PA and have seen many a PSU game over the years. They do just what it takes to win, bottom line. It's football at it's most basic level. Win the turnover battle and limit your mistakes and you will win the ballgame. Their individual defensive players stand out but as a whole, they don't perform like last years squad. Thamba Ali, Paul Poszlosky, and Alan Zematis are all players who will be on the next level. As a whole, they are solid but not with the best teams in the country. Offensively, they have a solid RB taking snaps and making the occassional throw. MRob, clearly a much better runner than a thrower had a system put around him that will limit his mistakes and allow him to win - as long as he doesn't make mistakes. A brilliant plan by JoePa and the coordinators. They knew the strengths and limitations of this team and have played to them like a violin.
They've had the luxury of a schedule that includes 8 of their 11 games at home with their toughest competition being played in Happy Valley. This was a season that was set-up for them to succeed and they have. You can't take that away from them. I bet that in terms of noise level, PSU will compete with any stadium in the country. Hell, you got 107,000 fans who pin everything on the PSU football season screaming at you for every play.
And maybe that is why I am not impressed. For those people who will compare the win-loss records of Notre Dame and PSU opponents and say that the Nittany Lions schedule is more difficult must have sniffed too much Happy Valley manure. I hate to say this but until this team goes on the road and beats a quality opponent, I will always have my reservations. What they have done thus far is truly remarkable. But on a personal level, I just don't see it. It's just been a season in which this team was meant to succeed.
They were taken to the last 30 seconds by Northwestern. They needed a 4th and 10 completion to keep the winning drive alive. Michigan was a tough loss to swallow but look at the play(s) that enabled PSU to take control. A fluke fumble return for TD and then a blown extra point snap that turns into a 2-point play. And then the home schedule. Purdue, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Minnesota, etc... I'd like to see what this team could have done if they det down by 3 scores to a Michigan State squad. I won't be surprised if we get that chance in 2 weeks.
