It’s not a big recruiting weekend, but the Nittany Lions will have some quality targets in town when they take on San Diego State on Saturday afternoon.
Welcome back to the 'S' Zone, a collaboration of notes on the Nittany Lions and Penn State recruiting put together by Lions247 editor Sean Fitz and 247Sports.com National Recruiting Writer Steve Wiltfong.
Today we break down those expected on hand on Saturday, see who the Nittany Lions are taking a look at on Friday and check in on some top targets in 2016 and 2017.
Read below for more.
Few Notables On Hand this weekend
While the 3:30 kick should provide a little more time for the Nittany Lions to entertain recruits before the game, the list for Saturday isn’t an expansive one.
Confirmed for the weekend is Fredericksburg (Va.) Chancellor Class of 2017 four-star defensive end Yetur Matos, who last visited in July for the Lasch Bash. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound prospect has off this week, so he’ll be up Friday and spend time with his family looking around campus and take in the game on Saturday. Clemson currently holds a slight edge over the Nittany Lions in this one, but Penn State is right there thanks in part to the efforts of Brent Pry. The staff has a good relationship with his staff at Chancellor and he worked with them at the Old Dominion satellite camp in June. Getting another visit is a real positive for a kid who has a lot of growing left to do.
Expected on hand this weekend is Holmdel (N.J.) St. John Vianney Regional Class of 2017 Top100 offensive tackle Micah Clark. Those around Clark expect him at Penn State this weekend, but he’s never one to count on 100 percent. As he told 247Sports’ Ryan Bartow last week, he’s only been to Maryland and Rutgers so far in the process. This trip should be an eye-opener for Clark, who has Penn State, Ohio State and Clemson on top early.
One committed visitor of note is Massachusetts tight end Danny Dalton, who will be down after his game on Friday evening. Dalton had five catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns in a week last weekend. Speaking of commits who aren’t regular visitors, Penn State expects to host Jake Zembiec and Blake Gillikin next weekend against Army.
Finally, a name to look out for in the future is expected back at Penn State this weekend. Erie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep Class of 2018 linebacker Matthew Bauer will be making the trip. The sophomore had a strong camp this summer and already holds an offer from Virginia. He’ll be on the radar when things come around in that cycle.
On the Road
Penn State will hit some hotspots in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon and see a few of its top targets in the Class of 2017 on Friday evening.
The Nittany Lions will be in the Cleveland area this afternoon. Among the prospects expecting to have Penn State speak with their coaches is Top247 wide receiver Jaylen Harris at Cleveland Heights. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior holds offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and others, and the Nittany Lions should join that list soon.
Penn State will drop in on three-star Class of 2017 tight end Charles Reeves at Steubenville. He holds offers from Michigan and Ohio University at this point. He was a wide receiver who grew out of that position and into a 6-5, 230-pound tight end.
Nittany Lion legacy Sam Gerak is a three-star center in the Avon (Ohio) Class of 2017. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound prospect holds offers from Illinois, Northwestern, Rutgers and others and has camped at Penn State. His father, John, was a third round pick out of Penn State in 1993 and played five years in the NFL. Obviously the younger Gerak is high on the Nittany Lions.
Moving across the border, the Nittany Lions will check in on Seton-LaSalle Top247 athlete Paris Ford. He will matchup with Steel Valley and Class of 2017 running back Dewayne Murray on Friday evening. We’ve been telling you to avoid buying into the leaders that Ford names, as they seemingly change with every interview, but we are confident that the Nittany Lions are firmly in the lead group here. He was to visit last weekend, but didn’t get a ride up. He’ll likely be up for another game this year, probably Michigan if his playoff schedule allows for a trip.
Penn State will also be in Beaver Falls on Friday night to check in on Class of 2017 defensive lineman Donovan Jeter. The four-star prospect is high on Pittsburgh, Penn State, Michigan State and recently offered Ohio State. Pitt, where his brother plays basketball, is strong right now for Jeter.
Nuts and Bolts
- Penn State hosted a pair of commits that have been connected to other schools last weekend in Miles Sanders and Lavert Hill. Of course, getting them on campus for the night game atmosphere helped, but things are far from over with both. The Nittany Lions were recruiting each hard last weekend, almost as if they were pursuing an uncommitted prospect. The early feedback seems positive, but the Nittany Lions know that each recruitment will likely have some twists and go the distance. Both are expected to be early enrollees and take their official visits for the White Out against Michigan. While we’re on the subject, the transfer to Detroit King has been tremendous from the academic side of things for Hill.
- There aren’t a ton of targets left out there in the Class of 2016, but Penn State has started looking at prospects committed elsewhere as a ‘just in case’ situation. One of those is Jersey quarterback Anthony Brown, who actually was going to visit last weekend before canceling late in the week. Brown was an Elite11 pick and is currently committed to Boston College. Penn State isn’t in the market for another quarterback in addition to Jake Zembiec, but we know that they would like to balance out the quarterback depth chart situation sometime in the next few classes. Brown is an interesting prospect who has been very productive at St. John Vianney. He remains committed to Boston College but Pitt has also expressed interest. He will not make the trip to Penn State with teammate Micah Clark this weekend.
- Notre Dame made a splash into Penn State’s linebacker efforts in the 2016 and 2017 class this week. Aaron Hansford had a very good visit to South Bend over the weekend, but this one seems far from over. Penn State will likely get him on campus again before his Jan. 2 Under Armour All-American Game announcement. The Irish vaulted into that lead group and will be a factor when he makes that decision. He will visit Oregon this weekend for his third official and the Ducks are a dark horse, despite the distance. On Wednesday night, the Fighting Irish extended an offer to Top100 Class of 2017 linebacker David Adams from Pittsburgh. It was certainly one that Adams covets, even though he’s not close to making a decision. Adams had a good, not great visit to Penn State last weekend for the Stripe Out. He enjoyed the atmosphere and really likes the defense that the Nittany Lions play, but a pregame scheduling mixup on Penn State’s end didn’t result in any time spent with the coaches. Not a killer, but also not what he was looking for. The Penn State coaches did reach out to him this week, however.

Dude's a Boo Bird.

So now I'm a boo bird because I'm not ready to compare a senior in high school to Jaylon Smith? Give me a break. The only other thing I've said recently is that we shouldn't dog on kids who pick other schools and write them off like they won't get a good education. Meaningful degrees can be earned at other universities - stop acting like Stanford or Notre Dame are the only schools that kids should consider. ND is better than that and their fans should be too.

Your second point is spot on, and it's annoying as hell when ND fans say a kid will be a nobody if they get their degree from State U.

But with your Filer post, all you did there was put a wet blanket over this thread for absolutely no reason. All the poster did was compare his speed at his size to Jaylon's. Nobody is coming close to saying he'll be the next Jaylon, bc we all know the next Jaylon is probably 8 years old right now lol. So when you come in with a contrarian POV when there was nothing to be contrarian about, well, in that case I feel the criticism was well-deserved. You stared something when nothing was there.

I guess what I was trying to say was that speed at the linebacker position doesn't necessarily mean the kid will be a great defender. Does it help? Hell yes it does. But having a player with the strength to shed blocks and the ability to make the proper reads is more important as an LB. Elite speed is just icing on the cake.

True story. This kid IMO is still highly underrated by the recruiting services. He has incredible closing speed at the LB position.

because of size right now, plus his area of competition...he did excellent at the opening which got him a bump

I agree, never would have thought this but maybe Hansford ends up in South Bend

The 247 guys have remained fairly confident since his visit. UF worries me as they can pitch
academics but an entirely different environment but I'm starting to feel better and better about Hansford. Plus I really like him as a player.

Yes, Hayes is a take no matter what. Hansford is a pure linebacker prospect along with McColluch. We are loading up on defense this year.

Our LB recruiting has gone from potentially awesome to cloudy with a chance of meatballs.
