Zook will be standing outside the gate handing out propoganda.

Probably right - though you'd think that his first priority would be back at Champaign, getting ready and then coaching against OSU. May very well be the reason that the Illini are struggling on the field.

Nah, there are a lot more reasons why they are struggling on the field, but it still has to do with Zook.

Steve was listed as a Top 30 prospect in the Class of 2008 by Rivals in their recently released recruiting yearbook.

Filer will play in what is being hyped as one of the biggest games in Illinois High School Football history this Saturday.

His Mt. Carmel squad will take on defending 8A state champions Lincoln Way East, who are currently on a 26 game winning streak, in the 8A state semifinals. Mt. Carmel lost the
7A title game last year and, because of the IHSA's mulitplier for Catholic schools, should probably be playing in 6A.

Two very good defenses and several D-I prospects will be on the field.

Indiana talked about adding a multiplier this year for the catholic and private schools. It did not pass which I personally am glad for. it is more evident in the smaller school divisions 1A-3A (Indiana only goes to 5A) where at least for the past 5-10 years the private schools have been dominant.

Jigga - are you going to the game? Fill us in when you can.

I renewed my Rivals subscription under EdgyTim.com and now have access to premium content.

From what the people at the game were saying, a Mt. Carmel 14-12 win, Filer is an absolute beast and played a great game.

Mt. Carmel is moving on to the 8A Championship game vs. Wheaton Warrensville South (Jerome Collins). I will tape the game to check out Filer.

What are the chances that this kid commits to ND in Feb. like Galippo did to USC? I hope we get some of these big guys to commit early so I won't have to worry until the AA game like this year.

Why does the fact that he is also being recruited by Illinois make me nervous?

Because Jim Jones, oops, I mean the Zooker is sneaking his "orange kool-aid" into your cold beverages when you're not looking.

I love how some Illinois fans think that Filer will be theirs, because Zook + Tez & Benn + Notre Dame lean/"lock" = Future Illini comittment.

People on both the ND and Illini side of the fence seem to think that Filer is very high on Notre Dame and that the Irish are the current favorite.

I continue to hear nothing but good things about Filer as both a football player and a kid off the field.

Also interesting to note is that in the video posted way back in the first page of this thread, his HS is definately playing a 3-4, or I'm a idiot. So he might be attracted to being able to play the same defense as he did in HS, and not turned off by it like some others who shall not be named.

As I have stated back in October, my one and only source in the recruiting business has told me that Filer is a heavy, heavy Irish lean. I would be shocked if he didn't chose ND.
My source is affiliated with MCHS.

Something tells me that Filer is a silent commit to ND. I just got a feeling that we have the #1 MLB in the country in our hands. I think right after signing day he's gonna be Irish. Just like Chris Gallippo was the day after signing day he commited to USC. Filer I think will be the same way for us.

A who's who hopes to corral Caravan's Filer

February 2, 2007
BY TAYLOR BELL

Mount Carmel coach Frank Lenti lovingly refers to linebacker Steve Filer as ''Teddy,'' as in Teddy Bear.
The 6-3, 220-pound junior is described as ''mild-mannered'' off the field. He never would be confused with Dick Butkus or Mike Ditka.

''I don't know if he ever had a bad day as far as his personality goes,'' Lenti said.

''I'm goofy off the field,'' Filer said. ''Sometimes I act my age [he'll be 17 in June], but I'm a fun-loving guy. Size doesn't match my personality. It's not how I am. I like to kid around.''

But Filer, perhaps the most recruited player produced at Mount Carmel, more so than NFL stars Donovan McNabb and Simeon Rice, will have to change his persona from nice to nasty as he prepares for his senior season.

''[Wyoming-bound] Mark Oliver was our leader and leading tackler last season,'' Lenti said. ''I hope Steve takes over the game as Oliver did. He needs to be our leader in 2007.''

The colleges are excited about what they have seen. Filer has a dozen scholarship offers, including Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Colorado and Virginia. He also is receiving interest from USC, UCLA, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Mississippi.

''I knew the time would come for me to be the leader of the defense,'' Filer said. ''I've always been in Oliver's shadow. I have to step up as a senior. I have to let everybody see I am the leader. I want to leave no doubt in anyone's mind that I'm the best linebacker in Illinois.''

To achieve that goal, Filer has an ambitious game plan. To improve his quick reactions, agility, awareness and athleticism, he is the leading scorer (14 ppg) on Mount Carmel's basketball team.

''Basketball keeps me in good shape, and it makes me a better football player,'' he said.

Before football practice begins in August, Filer hopes to boost his weight to 225 or 230, maintain his 4.6 speed and improve his bench press from 300 pounds to 345.

Basketball helps to keep his body toned. He eats and drinks a lot of protein and eats a lot of carbohydrates such as spaghetti, peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches and fruit shakes.

But he confesses that he has one failing. He can't get along without New York cherry ice cream.

Recruiting isn't high on his priority list. He insists he has no dream school. In fact, last fall he attended a college football game for the first time. And he watched one college game on television -- the national championship.

But he knows what he is looking for. He wants to study mechanical or electrical engineering. He wants to be a builder or inventor. He is curious and inquisitive. He loves to take things apart and put them together again. He likes to see how things operate.

He said he has received good advice about the recruiting process from his father; from Mount Carmel teammate Arthur Ray Jr., who is committed to Michigan State; and from Illinois-bound Martez Wilson of Simeon.

''I want to see what schemes that colleges are running, to see if their defense fits me,'' Filer said. ''A lot of people try to push you to certain schools. But I have to be there, not them. So I want to pick a school where I want to go because that's where I'm going to be for four years.''

This will come down to ND and Illinois.

Don't expect an early decision either. We may not know until summer, possibly even later.

If he goes to Ill. I am going to kill myself.

Got a chuckle out of that. We have a lot of offers out to LBs in the north. I think we need to build a solid base of LBs with guys we KNOW we'll get (the Chi-town, NJ, MN, western PA guys, etc) before we start pulling the National recruits in.

It has to start somewhere. I'd love to get Filer as much as the next guy, but all we can do is hope really.

All positive, but pretty lukewarm comments. Now that basketball is over, Filer is probably going to be doing more visits. ND is the only place he has been to so far.

thats why i've been saying that i just don't feel right about him, he may have some small ties to ND, but he hasnt even been going on visits to other schools and ND doesnt really seem to stand out to him. Thankfully theres about 100 great Linebackers this year

The latest rumor, I repeat rumor, on Filer is that he wanted to give the staff a "silent commit" last week, but in line with the new policy they turned him down. The coaching staff told Filer to be 100% sure before he offers any commitment to ND. The purveyor of this rumor said that Filer is heavily favoring ND right now, but would like to have the opportunity to look around. He also said that Filer will announce his commitment before school starts in Fall.

Caveat Emptor, the source of this rumor also claimed that Martez Wilson was ND bound last year, so as with all rumors, take it for what it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if Wilson was ND bound at some point last spring...but I like Weis's new policy. Either you are committed or you are looking around; you can't do both
