Buy, It is an elite job. That being said, I still don't see any coaches of top half BCS conference teams leaving to take it. HIGH risk job. They are probably looking at a mid-major guy trying to break into the bigtime like Meyer.

I am a recruiter and take it from me, accepting the counter offer is a death sentence. The school will not forget what he did, thus, their loyalty to him is gone. This will be a relationship with quite a bit of animosity unless he wins the big one REAL soon. The first sign of trouble and they'll dump him.

Your deluding yourself if you think they had loyalty in the first place.
Coaches are commodities. They're as good as their last set of numbers.
If Rodriguez stumbles with a pair of 5-7 seasons he'll be history. He's raised the expectations levels in Morgantown. Nehlen had a .614 winning percentage. Bobby Bowden was .618. Rodriguez is .690.
No WV coach has had that kind of success in 8 decades.
Nehlen had two 11 wins seasons in 21 years. Bowden won 9 once in 6 years. If Rodriguez wins his bowl game his have two 11 wins seasons in 6 years. He's only won less than 8 games once. Before Rodriguez 7 wins was a typical season in Morgantown.
Despite signing a new contract in June as a hot coach he was approached. Bama made an offer. WVU said we can't compete in a bidding war. They sweeten the pot but they did not met Bama's $$$$. They can't. Rodriquez said there's no place like home.
He didn't pursue Bama. They persued him.
In your business there are a lot of people to fill those available slots. In college football winning coaches are few. A university that holds a grudge deserves the 7-5 replacement they usually hire as a replacement.
