The University of Miami will promote defensive coordinator Randy Shannon to head coach, the Miami Herald reported Thursday night.
The report, citing a well-placed university source, indicated that Shannon has accepted the position, and that an annoucement would be made on Friday. Shannon, 40, would become the sixth black head coach in Division I football, and would replace Larry Coker, who was fired last month after six seasons. Miami had pursued Rutgers coach Greg Schiano for the job, but Schiano, a former Miami assistant coach, opted to remain at Rutgers.
