Not sure if premium, so just posting a snippet below of direct quotes from Kelly.
So it looks like they're giving Smith some cross-training reps at SAM as many of us had hoped. Will only help diversify his use in the fall while also providing some contingency for injuries.

“Today, Jaylon Smith played that position all day,” Kelly said of the Sam linebacker spot. “Jaylon played that position for us as a true freshman. He played out at the drop Sam position on the perimeter. Jaylon has played the Sam and he’s playing the Will. We feel now that he has his reads down at the comfort level playing side.”
“We can now look at a bigger, physical presence on the perimeter,” he continued. “If you want to put a tight end in and you want to play more physical, we have a guy like Jaylon who can step up and play there.”
“I think we have all talked about Joe Schmidt now and Jarrett Grace and Nyles Morgan, and Te’Von Coney. We have to find a place for all these guys,” Kelly said. “Those are inside guys. So we have to be able to get all these guys on the field. Jaylon now allows us, in certain situations, to move him out on the perimeter. If we wanted to get, say Joe Schmidt and Jarrett Grace on the field with Jaylon, we can now do that.”
“So we have to be able to look at that to get the right set of linebackers on the field at the same time,” he continued.
