Sylvie targets Irish official

Three-star safety Chanse Sylvie is starting to put together an official visit schedule. Notre Dame is on the list and could be first up with a decision expected in October as Sylvie works to enroll early.

Chanse Sylvie doesn’t have time for much this summer.

Most days the three-star safety gets in at least a pair of workouts, one in the morning at Calvary Baptist High School in Shreveport, La., and another at night. He’s also working a construction job on the side.

But that hasn’t kept him from at least paying partial attention to the recruiting process, which required a recent cut to his list of offers. Sylvie doesn’t plan to reveal that group to the public just yet.

“It’s looking good,” he said. “I told my coaches the schools I’m interested in.”

Sylvie is picking from a group of offers that includes Arizona, Baylor, Cal, Michigan, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Washington, among others.

Texas A&M has also been in contact but has yet to offer a scholarship.

Narrowing it down, even if just internally, involved some basic criteria being applied across the board.

“First off was the education,” Sylvie said. “Second off was not if they want me but if they need me. How many safeties there are on the team and also from that standpoint, getting to know the coach that would work with me for the next four years of my life. I’ve got to get to know them as a person and build the relationship. I just based it off of that.”

Potential official visit destinations are something Sylvie did reveal.

Notre Dame could get its shot at the 6-foot, 175-pound prospect during its season opener against Texas. Sylvie has been talking to defensive backs coach and area recruiter Todd Lyght about the possibility.

“I’ve talked to coach Lyght often,” Sylvie said. “When I’m up at Notre Dame I want to get to know the players and also the coaches. I want to see the atmosphere, the game day atmosphere. I just want to experience it. The next stage of my life, I want to see how it is up in South Bend and experience the culture.”

Sylvie has also picked the brain of his cousin, Irish running back Tarean Folston, for more information.

“I’ve talked to him,” Sylvie said. “It’s probably been a month or two that I talked to him about it. He was just talking about how it’s a structured school, great educational school.”

Other official visits in the planning stages include Michigan on Sept. 12, Arizona on Sept. 26, and Nebraska on Oct. 10 with another open slot remaining. Sylvie wants to make a decision during the season with plans to enroll early at the program of his choice.

“That’s why with all my visits my last one is Oct. 10,” Sylvie said. “I’m trying to enroll early, so I have to do it pretty soon. I’d say probably no later than October.”

“They fit into the things I’m looking for in a school,” he said. “I’m looking for education, religion, a place I could carry my beliefs and help me strengthen my beliefs as a Christian, also the depth and tradition around the school, the winning tradition, people around me focusing on goals and also life after football.”

As Panda mentioned before, he will OV for Texas. He will also OV to Michigan and Arizona in September, and then Nebraska on October 10. He hopes to decide by the end of that week. Chance is being recruited by Todd Lyght and BK, but his relationship with Folston seems to be the lynchpin of the recruitment.
