Ben Bredeson, OL, 6-5, 280, Arrowhead High School, Hartland, WI is one of the highest rated offensive line recruits in the Midwest and he is high on the Irish wish list as well. He has put recruiting on the back burner for now though and is instead focusing on basketball. Bredeson knows his role is to be a physical presence, one that he is both suited for and willing to accept.
“We are doing all right about halfway through,” he reported. “We are tied for first place in the conference, so we will see where it goes. I am there to get rebounds, be physical and pass it to the fast guys.”
Still, the four-star recruit knows that his future lies on the gridiron and once the basketball season is over he will turn his focus to football. Though he had a successful junior season, he knows there are still things for him to work on in order to get better.
“Football season went great,” he said. “We made it to the state title for the third year in a row, but lost the title game. It was a pretty good year. I felt like I made a lot of improvements and played way better than my sophomore year. There is still some stuff to work on going into this year.”
Bredeson continued.
“I am trying to get stronger than I am now and I feel that it is one thing I can really get better at. I need to keep working on my pass set and run blocking too. I want to keep a lot of the technique stuff sharp during the offseason, so when I get to the season, I am ready to go. I am shooting to be around 290-295 pounds by the time the season starts.”
Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand recently checked in on Bredeson. The talented Wisconsin recruit boasts offers from the top programs all over the nation. In addition to Notre Dame, he holds offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Rutgers and Tennessee.
“Coach Hiestand was up here last week and I talked to him,” he shared. “I have always talked to him on the phone and we have remained in contact. He is really easy to relate to. Coach Heistand is a great coach and an even better guy. He is fun to talk to and I always enjoy those conversations. When he came to visit, it was a good time as well. He is definitely a coach that I like.”
Many of the schools that have offered Bredeson have stopped by his school to visit so Notre Dame will face a difficult task in earning his signature. If the Irish do ultimately land him, they will decide then where to play him on the offensive line.
“They haven’t narrowed it down yet,” he explained. “Hiestand said they will figure it out later. It will depend on how I grow and where they need bodies at. I am open to either spot. It doesn’t matter to me.”
Bredeson has two criteria that will dictate his final choice.
“I want to be tight with the coaches and have a coaching staff that I really like,” he said. “
I also want a school that has some academic pride behind it. I want to be able to get a job and hit the networking fields when I graduate or complete my football career. Having a degree that actually means something in the world today is something I am looking for.”
