Exactly. IMO the feet are the real thing that separate LT's from RT's and guards, and although Elmer's tape is really good, when he tries to mirror the outside speed rusher he moves his feet like he crapped his pants. Kraemer's outside leg kick is underwhelming, while Bredeson's is very good and Eichenberg's is as good as any tape I've seen at the high school level. Kraemer is still good enough to play tackle at the D1 level, but he definitely looks more of an interior lineman/RT.

So you wouldn't rate him a 5 star or have him at #4 like 247 does? About what number would you rate him as OT prospect then?

Don't get me wrong, Kraemer is a hell of a prospect, although I don't know if based on what I've seen (granted we're talking about sophomore tape) he's 5 star caliber. He could probably be a more than adequate left tackle at the D1 level, but would make more of an ideal right tackle IMO. Left tackles have to be able to neutralize edge rushers, and that skill is hard to come by even for NFL teams.

Eichenberg is about as prototypical a LT you'll find at the high school level and plays at an elite level. Bredeson seems like a poor man's Eichenberg (still easily a top 50 overall prospect). I'd put Bredeson and Kraemer as roughly equal talents, with Bredeson being a finesse player suited for LT, and Kraemer being more of a RT mauler.

My favorite OL recruit that we've had in the past couple of years would be Nelson, who could probably be a monster interior or exterior lineman (has the feet and frame to play LT, but is a monster blocking in space at guard). Eichenberg would be the only prospect I may have taken over him.

Kraemer knows that he will be a guard at Notre Dame and that has been discussed already. Notre Dame wants to get bigger and more physical. That fits his game. He isnt the most agile or athletic kid, so LT might be a stretch for him and thats not saying he couldnt play there. Almost all the top OL in high school play Tackle and then some make the switch to other positions in college.

Kraemer having the ability to play 4 slots along the line is a benefit for him and one of his strengths. He is somewhat like Steve Elmer and you can plug him in at different slots to get your best 5 on the field. Could Elmer play LT? Sure, but thats not his ideal position at the college level.

I can't help but think that putting Bredeson at OT and Kraemer at OG is inconsistent with the notion that the staff wants to get bigger and more physical on the OL. Bredeson is LISTED at 6-4, which means he could be anywhere between 6-2 and 6-4. Why would you put one of your smallest OL at the tackle position? I understand the thought is that he has great feet for handling edge rushers it just runs counter to the "bigger/more physical" philosophy. Usually when I think of a team trying to get bigger and more physical it makes me think they want to pound away with the run game - Bredeson isn't exactly a road grader at OT - at least he may not be against defensive ends that are 6-5 280+.

Ben Bredeson, OL, 6-5, 280, Arrowhead High School, Hartland, WI is one of the highest rated offensive line recruits in the Midwest and he is high on the Irish wish list as well. He has put recruiting on the back burner for now though and is instead focusing on basketball. Bredeson knows his role is to be a physical presence, one that he is both suited for and willing to accept.
“We are doing all right about halfway through,” he reported. “We are tied for first place in the conference, so we will see where it goes. I am there to get rebounds, be physical and pass it to the fast guys.”
Still, the four-star recruit knows that his future lies on the gridiron and once the basketball season is over he will turn his focus to football. Though he had a successful junior season, he knows there are still things for him to work on in order to get better.
“Football season went great,” he said. “We made it to the state title for the third year in a row, but lost the title game. It was a pretty good year. I felt like I made a lot of improvements and played way better than my sophomore year. There is still some stuff to work on going into this year.”
Bredeson continued.
“I am trying to get stronger than I am now and I feel that it is one thing I can really get better at. I need to keep working on my pass set and run blocking too. I want to keep a lot of the technique stuff sharp during the offseason, so when I get to the season, I am ready to go. I am shooting to be around 290-295 pounds by the time the season starts.”
Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand recently checked in on Bredeson. The talented Wisconsin recruit boasts offers from the top programs all over the nation. In addition to Notre Dame, he holds offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Rutgers and Tennessee.
“Coach Hiestand was up here last week and I talked to him,” he shared. “I have always talked to him on the phone and we have remained in contact. He is really easy to relate to. Coach Heistand is a great coach and an even better guy. He is fun to talk to and I always enjoy those conversations. When he came to visit, it was a good time as well. He is definitely a coach that I like.”
Many of the schools that have offered Bredeson have stopped by his school to visit so Notre Dame will face a difficult task in earning his signature. If the Irish do ultimately land him, they will decide then where to play him on the offensive line.
“They haven’t narrowed it down yet,” he explained. “Hiestand said they will figure it out later. It will depend on how I grow and where they need bodies at. I am open to either spot. It doesn’t matter to me.”
Bredeson has two criteria that will dictate his final choice.
“I want to be tight with the coaches and have a coaching staff that I really like,” he said. “I also want a school that has some academic pride behind it. I want to be able to get a job and hit the networking fields when I graduate or complete my football career. Having a degree that actually means something in the world today is something I am looking for.”

It sounds like Harry H and Co have been putting in some quality work with this kid and he must be buying into the value of the ND degree and the large national network that comes with it!

As Panda mentioned in the Kraemer thread, Bredeson was offered by Alabama yesterday. The day before that, 247 had an article where he discussed his top 4: Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio State. Here's a direct quote from him regarding ND:

Ben Bredeson said:
"They've got a history that's top notch and hard to beat. I was there when they played Michigan and it was really exciting. Their alumni base is unbelievable. I'm real close with Coach Hiestand. He's a great guy. He comes by every once in awhile and I love talking to him. He's a guy I can see myself playing for some day."

He had nice things to say about each school and the coaches recruiting him, but Hiestand is the only one who had that last bit said about him. Take that for what it's worth (not much). As far as the Alabama offer, 247 had him saying that it "could potentially shake that list up." I would read that as either "the list could grow to five" or Ohio State gets dropped for the Fightin' Bagmen. (247 Bama Article)

If you were to believe Steve Lorenz (lol, why would you?), this will be a Wisconsin vs. Michigan recruiting battle. We will see if Harbaugh and Drevno can wedge their way back into the mix. But given his recent comments about what he is looking for, I think this comes down to the in-state school and ND, despite big brother playing baseball in AA.

If Hiestand gets three out of four with Kraemer, Eichenberg, Boudreaux, and Bredeson then he deserves to have his statue put on top of the dome.

I'll second the statue idea and ask, would 3 of those 4 be better than the 2014 haul of Bars, Nelson, Mustipher, Byrne?

I'd say yes. Though I love Bars and Nelson, all of the above 4 are ahead of Mustipher and Byrne. However, its close and a fun debate.

Best pickup line I ever heard : Woman walks up, "Hi, Harry! You are Harry, aren't you?"

(I agree with your sentiment!)

Last great one was Jim Flanigan I think. Dave Casper is from Wisconsin, so is the Appleton Assassin - Rocky Bleier.

Was Tom Clements from Wisconsin? One of the great ND QB's was. Google time!

Well I was wrong. There were TWO all time greats: Gus Dorais and Terry Brennan.

Throw in 1 of the 4 Horseman, Jim Crowley too.

Per Wiltfong he loved the visit and their source is saying it's ND/Wiscy. However Wiltfong will continue to include UM as he thinks they're still a player. Not as much of a slam dunk as Eichenberg but sitting good.

I feel like if we land Eichenberg it actually helps us get Bredeson. HH can sell him on becoming part of the best O-line class not just in the country, but over the last several years. Throw Parker Boudreaux, Nathan Smith or Michael Jordan on top of the Big 3 and we're set for years.

OR hold off once you land the big three and go after a humongous fish like Willie Allen. Can you imagine rolling into 2019 with Allen-Kraemer-Hoge-Eichenberg-Bredeson across the line. Oh man, I'm getting light-headed. I need to sit down.

"Hear that giant sucking sound? That's Harry Heistand taking your offensive line prospects".

But seriously a haul like that would probably more high end OL talent than the rest of the big 10 combined.

This is the upside of having low numbers in 2015! Its pretty easy to see how the numbers will work out. You basically get the benefit of excellent competition, with the bonus of a clear path to the field.

He's visitng UM this weekend and it's being said this this might be his last visit before he decides. It's a UM/ND battle right now so we'll see what happens from here.
