Regardless of your views on the war, the treatment that these men and women received upon their return home was mostly disgusting. God Bless them all, those that are still around.

U.S. Marines land at Da Nang - Mar 08, 1965 - HISTORY.com

Little known but Harry Truman sent the first U.S. soldiers to Vietnam. At the close of WWII the US had vast stockpiles of military material in the Pacific. Truman gave a lot of it to the French to supply their forces in Indochina. As the French didn't have pilots to fly the planes, they were flown by Army Air Corps pilots. Every US President from Truman to Nixon had a hand, overtly or covertly in Vietnam.

Grandfather, who also served in WWII and Korea was a pow for a brief time in Vietnam, just had lunch at the airport he ended up giving flight lessons at until his death earlier today. Met a man who remembers him well,... Thanks Grandpa Si.

God bless your grandfather and all those that fought. My father in law to this day will not talk about his time in Vietnam. Keeps his Purple Heart in his clothes drawer, got shrapnel from a land mine in his back. He was a mine sweeper. He got exposed to Agent Orange and all his kids, including my wife have issues due to it. The government won't admit that agent orange has any affect on others. It's a shame.

My oldest brother in law was stationed in Da Nang (Air Force) in 68. Agent Orange got him as well with kidney failure and diabetes. His last four to five years were spent with the loss of both legs and weekly dialysis.

My father did two tours in Vietnam as a forward observer. He crawled through a ton of Agent Orange and it gave him the cancer that killed him in 2000.

58,000+ dead Americans, and another 300,000+ injured, in return for absolutely nothing. People like to say the Iraq War is the biggest foreign policy blunder in US history, but I think it's easily Vietnam. The more I read about the strategic thinking around it, the more puzzled I become.

My family has a whole chest full of film brought back from Vietnam, one titled "Bob Hope," others just saying "air strikes." His war buddies we've spoken to have said there is likely some really messed up stuff on them so getting it developed by strangers is a bad idea. One of these days we'll get it all digitized and see if there's anything for museums or whatever.

The government finally owned up and paid for my BIL's health care. He also got a large settlement.

Buster, don't wait. Get it done asap. Otherwise it will never get done. (Personal experience with father in law WWII and about half dozen photo albums or other documents).

I opposed the Vietnam War, but never felt any ill-will to those who served their country. They were victims of a government that openly lied to the American public, and 58,000+ lost their lives as a result. Those who fought did so valiantly and deserve our respect and praise.

Vietnam should have been our lesson to stay out of regional conflicts. There is nothing to be won by taking sides in these civil wars. Unfortunately, we were misled into Iraq and Afghanistan with no viable exit strategy. These regional conflicts are quagmires created by colonialism and artificial boundaries that we are better off avoiding.

Before committing any American troops to these conflicts, we should first define what constitutes a victory. Then we should go full throttle to achieve that victory. If we cannot define what constitutes a victory or cannot commit to achieving victory, we have no business entering the conflict.

In the FO community it was always said the average life span of a FO in a combat zone was 13 seconds. Was a Vietnam number, much different now as Ive made it 3 tours strong. My opinion it's the best job in the Army next to sniper. Same idea just we get bigger rounds
