I'm all for an open competition every spring. Zaire pushed Golson last year. Maybe next year he beats him. But there seems to be an argument being made by some that Zaire should be playing over Golson right now. I think that's a recipe for finishing this season 7-6.

If we keep turning the ball over at our current pace and our D keeps playing like it did against NW we are going to finish 7-6 anyways.

I am not for benching Golson yet but if he goes out and turns it over 3-4 times against Louisville then I might join that crowd.

You had to see this coming when you decided to post that...

I'm with you on the read option. We don't run it nearly enough. We ran it that play and took it to the house and did we call it a single time after that?

Why didn't you post the video of Golson fumbling the read option as well?

problem is EG is generally been terrible at reading the defensive player designated for him to read. On his long TD if the d tackle kinda screwed up hesitating and then just aiming for the RB and not watching the QB-RB exchange at all.
Take the jet sweep option later in the game when he kept the ball and ran straight into the guy who was meant to read. It was pitiful :(

On the read option......I think they would like to run it a little more, but Golson only has so many hits in him and I think you value him throwing the ball vs him running it. Running is a luxury of his game and he can get 4yards on 3rd and 3, but he isnt a Malik Zaire/JT Barrett/Nick Marshall, where you want him running 10-15 times a game. Could he do it? Sure, but then you would probably get 8-10 games out of him.

Zaire, Kizer and Wimbush are your typical read option qbs where they can take more hits than Golson and add value to the run game. Do they have Golsons arm? No. But they are more of the type you would feel comfortable running more read plays.

The other is just the fumbles Golson has had. I dont think you want him carrying the ball more than he has to at this point. im not worried as much when he scrambles when he runs, but its just a concern.

I do love the fact they ran read off the DT against NW and I think that is an easier read for Golson too. Reading a LB/DE is a little harder, while the DT is almost always going upfield and as long as the DE/LB get blocked its cake for Golson at the point.

But overall, i dont mind seeing little to no read option with Golson. Its simply not his strength or playing to his strength.

They should scrap read option. That single highlight is one of the few times I've seen it work this season. I don't think I've ever seen an athletic QB as inept as EG when it comes to running the option. I'd also like to see them working in Malik. Tired of Golson forking the ball over. It's not something new for him and it's not going away.
