Yikes. I'm not quite sure what to make of this. That's a lot of money to invest into a guy that's been proven not to give two shits about his team.

and who strikes out on with epic numbers... I was hoping my Angels might get him but when I heard he signed w/ someone for that amount I thought "PLease tell me we were not that stupid!"

could be a nice compliment to D. Lee and A. Ram. if it works out though

LOL... The South Central Angels of Los Angeles in Anaheim via Marina Del Ray have enough ludicrous contracts. They didn't need another.

I wouldn't want Alfos.. for THAT much to begin with but...

Our "ludicrous" contracts have brought...
1-MVP
1-Cy Young
1- World Championship (since 1908)

how have all those inflated contracts of yours worked out by the way???

The Big "A" is my church and I take insults at my Angels cartoonish name personal....

lol, god once cfb ends I will REALLY miss baseball

What inflated contracts do the Cubs have? They've never spent enough for the money they make... that's ALWAYS been the problem.

You are right, historically they have one of the cheaper front offices... maybe in all of sports...

BUT more recently....

M Alou, Sosa, A Ram, D Lee, J Pierre your broken pitchers... and now Sor... looks like times are a changing... I will say this, in the NL one big sign can turn it all around, it would be nice to watch a W.S. game played at Wrigley... you never know

This sign will have real impact on my Angels too... last year they banked on Paul K. leaving Chi town and coming west, when it didn't happen then went into a shell... can't wait to see if they push a trade or go after Matthews Jr.... Carl Lee or whoever... one thing is for sure my Angels are going no where in the AL without adding SOME kind of offense

I dunno if its fair to say that Alou Ramirez or Lee are inflated. All three were/ are well worth the money spent (relative to the contracts of pro athletes) Alou was about as clutch as one could want. Ramirez is young, but by far the most solid 3rd basemen in atleast a decade, Finally I don't think a guy who had a legitimate shot at the triple crown two years ago was a stretch.

I'll agree putting way to much expectations literally on the shoulders of Wood and Prior was a terrible move and Sosa was there to put yuppies in the seats trying to catch a homer, but not all the moves have been solely for that purpose

who's inflated on the Angels in comparison?? that's all I'm saying
Vlad?... UNDERpaid
Bart?... Cy Young winner
Escobar? Maybe, but he is VERY important to this staff
O.C.?? yeah okay, we should have kept Eck no one's perfect...
K Rod? please...
Rivera? steal
Sheilds? steal
Lackey? steal

that's all I'm saying

it was a good move boys, he was one of the best available free agents out there. It was either him or Zito. I am happy i must say

How people can be mad about this deal (due to the length and money) is beyond me. It's not YOUR money. Let the Trib spend like idiots if they want, I want a good baseball team. Alfy was the best FA out there this season, and the Cubs got him. Now I hope they finish by stealing JD Drew from the Red Sox in free agency. That'd make it-

C- Barrett
1B- Lee
2B- DeRosa (not a fan of this schmuck, he's worse than Todd Walker)
3B- Ramirez
SS- Izturis (actually a good player once the offense has weapons and he's not needed to hit)
LF- Murton/Jones (would be a great platoon- knowing the Cubs they'll deal Murton and play Jones every day, and live to regret it)
CF- Soriano
RF- Drew

Could be nice. Now, pitching.

I kinda wish they had stuck with the platoon at second with Cedeno and Theriot.

I thought Soriano was going to move to Center with Pierre leaving. Not a Cubs fan but they are going to have some games with a ton of runs if all can stay healthy.

8 years? Damn.

He's 31 years old.

Exactly that is a lot of money to be paying a 37 year old never mind two years later.

He's 31 years old.

some in the Yankee organization speculated that he was 2 years older then he was listed as.

He's a good player, but plays lousy defense. I suppose he'll be playing the outfield for the Cubs. He's an offensive machine, but I do think they overspend for him, the only competition the Cubs really had for him was the Angels.

Now if the Cubs can somehow get a healthy Woods, and Prior they may compete for a playoff spot next year. The Cardinals only won 83 games so it shouldn't be too difficult to rebuild a team in the NL.

He's a "lousy" defensive player who led the NL with 22 outfield assists last year.

"That's only because everyone ran on him, because they knew he was lousy!"

Not true. The Cubs outfield last year (Murton, Pierre, Jones) was run on constantly because people knew how bad they were. Despite having so many extra chances to peg people out, they didn't have nearly as many assists, combined, as Soriano had by himself.

His range is good, not great. His arm is fantastic. His glove and instincts improved all year.

He was a butcher at second, but he's not one in the outfield.

Your BEST defensive outfielder should be in center.

They signed this guy for his bat and they're sticking him out in CF because they have an open spot.

This team will have a lot of sluggers, just like they did in 2003, but the pitching is where the money should be going. I've heard they are going after 30-something Jason Schmidt and possibly bringing Maddux back.

They will try to win now, and fail, thus setting the organization back even further because they have no minor league system right now.

Jim Hendry is a moron and the Cubs will never win anything with him as General Manager. Ever.
