Teams can match up against certain teams better. Michigan had it's crack at Ohio State and they lost. They should not get a 2nd shot. ...
In 1943 the AP Poll ended up
- Notre Dame (9-1)
- Iowa PreFlight (9-1)
- Michigan (8-1)
- Navy (8-1)
- Purdue (9-0)
- Great Lakes (10-2)
- Duke (8-1)
- Del Monte PreFlight (7-1)
- Northwestern (6-2)
- March Field (9-1)
- Army (7-2-1)
- Washington (4-1)
- Georgia Tech (8-3)
By this logic:
#2 Iowa PreFlight couldn't play ND for the NC, they lost to ND while the #2 ranked team 14-13 at ND. Also lost to Great Lakes.
#3 Michigan couldn't play ND as they lost to ND while the #2 ranked team 35-12 in AA. UM also beat #9 NW.
#4 Navy couldn't play ND, they lost to ND while the #3 ranked team 33-6 in Cleveland. Navy beat #7 Duke, #11 Army, and #13 GT.
#9 Northwestern couldn't play ND, they lost to ND while the #8 ranked team 25-6 in Evanston. Also lost to #3 UM but beat #6 Great Lakes
#11 Army couldn't play ND, they lost to ND while the #3 ranked team 26-0 at Yankee Stadium. Also lost to Navy.
#13 Georgia Tech couldn't play ND, they lost to ND 55-13 (shades of USC v Arkansas) at ND. Also lost to Navy and Duke.
#6 Great Lakes actually beat ND in Chicago 19-14 in the last 33 seconds of the game but ND remained #1 on their body of work for the season. Playing 7 of the Top 13 teams in the Final Poll and beating 6.
By your reasoning Iowa PF, Michigan, and Navy as the #2, 3, and 4 teams would be disqualified because they've already played. So ND play the 5th ranked Boilermakers who went 9-0 and beat Great Lakes 23-13. PU was Co-Champion of the Big 10 but didn't play any other ranked team in the Final Poll including the other Big 10 Co-Champion Michigan (whose only loss was to ND). PU had the worst Strength of Schedule (by far) of the Top 6 teams.
Should #1 replay #6 for the title? Although Great Lakes lost to Purdue in the first game of the season the knocked of the Final Poll #1 and #1 teams, ND and Iowa PF.
ND had the toughest SOS an incredible .950
Strength Of Schedule
ND .950
Navy .762
Great Lakes .757
GT .730
NW .720
Iowa PF .620
UM .575
PU .535
There are other years to use as examples this was the best that came to mind.
