Didn't see a thread about this. The AP story said Carlson would miss Army and USC. Didn't say anything about the nature of the injury, other than that it was to the knee, nor did it mention bowl prospects. Still, this is real bad news. Who steps up? Yeatman or Rueland?

I don't think we need Yeatman or Reuland to step up, we have Marcus Freeman. If I remember correctly, in the spring/summer the starting TE battle was between Freeman and Carlson, without mention of Yeatman or Reuland. I think we'll be fine with Freeman, he did catch a touchdown pass today.

Ashley McConnell has a TD catch this year. It doesn't signify skill. I don't know if Freeman's the guy. I think Charlie will play around with this at practice, and in the Army game. See who does best.

I doubt they'd need him against Army, but that really sucks for the USC game. They're gonna need every offensive weapon they have in that one.

Hope Freeman and/or Reuland (I just doubt it'd be Yeatman) step up. Freeman's been around for a long time at least, so he should be fairly comfortable.

Ashley McConnell is a starter on our offense, it's not like he's a terrible player?

McConnell is a senior who started the year behind a true soph, he's in their because of injury to Schweppe's, Schwapp..however its spelled.

Yes, but ND likes to run some two TE formations.

I didn't hear that Carlson got hurt. Can someone fill me in, please?

I'm not sure what happened either. If he's out the rest of the year thats not good but we have Marcus Freeman who challenged John Carlson in the preseason for the starting TE position and we have a few good freshman TE's as well. No real need to worry at this point if he has to miss a game against army.

He got rolled up on.....I have always thought Freeman is the best and most fundamental TE on the team and was really excited when he finally got a TD today. I think we are in safe hands and in terms of 2 TE's. Konrad has been getting lots of reps on goalline and short yardage anyway so he is ready to step in.

Well put dude. Marcus freeman is getting more experience as well as Konrad Ruelans. I'm not a bit worried. We have good backups.

I personally am very concerned if Carlson misses the USC game. I can't even count how many times Carlson has made huge 3rd down plays. I said earlier this year that he is the one player we couldn't afford to lose. Freeman might be decent, bnut Carlson was special.

I don't want to sound pessimistic though...4 teams in front of us lost this week. Thismeas that we are right back in the title hunt. We really need Florida to lose and we could seriously be playing against the OSO/Mich winner on January 11th!.

The injury brings forth this question:

If Carlson does miss significant time will that make him more likely to return for his final year at ND?

I watched the game on CSTV and it looked as if he got rolled up when he was blocking. I did not see the press report in AP yet, but he walked off the field under his own power and I saw him walking around on the sideline after coming out.

Hopefully it was not too bad, did not appear to be.

Early in the year, when CW was asked about why Yeatman was seeing more PT than Reuland, he said that they play different positions. I could only assume that means Yeatman is the blocking TE (the position that Freeman plays normally), and Reuland is the receiving TE. So if Carlson is out, I think Reuland will play the second tight end spot. Let Freeman play next to Young, give him some needed help, and let Reuland play alongside Harris, where his blocking (or lack thereof) would be needed less, but pass-catching skills well utilized.

This should be an interesting situation to watch develop. One fundamental difference I've seen so far between Weis and Carroll is that Weis is much more reluctant to lean on the freshman to make contributions. Perhaps Carroll has only done so out of necessity, but he's had many freshman contribute greatly to the team. I point this out for recruiting purposes, because when prospects see freshman on the field playing well, it's a whole lot easier for them to see themselves being able to contribute from the start as well. It's something that can only help a program...

We plug the next guy in at ND have you not heard any of Coach Weis press conferences. That is what I like so much about this coaching staff that they have all the players who are on the bus prepared to play. If you are not ready to play you stay at the house. Freeman will do fine. Will he stretch the field like Carlson? I hope!

That about sums it up for me....never had a worry when the ball was thrown to Carlson. Knew he was money. Freeman isn't that much of a sure thing at this point. I hope BQ throws to him a good bit in the Army game because he could be very valuable vs the Spoiled Children.

Losing Carlson is a big blow...there's no way around it. Is Freeman going to make that one-handed grab in the end zone, or that one yesterday just getting his feet in at the corner? Is he going to go over the middle on 3rd and long (or 4th for that matter) and pull it down for the crucial first? Who knows, we can all hope he does. With Carlson we didn't have to hope, we knew he'd make the catch. Hopefully Freeman is as much of a sleeper as Carlson was at the beginning of the season.

The one thing about this whole situation that makes me not so worried is, in 2 years Charlie has turned 2 unknown TE's into draft picks. I think it is as much a product of his coaching and offensive system as it is their ability, and w/ the depth at the position, I think he'll find someone to fill in quite nicely, just like he did at the beginning of the season.

Will there be some dropoff in play? Probly, otherwise why was Carlson starting in the first place? But I think there's good reason to hope it won't be much dropoff.

Sounds like Carlson has maybe a sprained knee. Guessing by the four week return date.

Just a thought:

Has anyone ever seen the way Billicheck operates with his injury reports? His phantom injuries have coaches guessing all week.

What if Carlson sits against army, Freeman is not utilized at all, and therefore Petey wont gameplan for the TE position?

I just find it odd that Weis is so tightlipped about injuries and all of a sudden he is open with the press about his QBs favorite target.

I think we will see a lot more plays with McConnell in the lineup now, especially in situations where you would expect 2-TE sets. Experience goes a long way especially when it comes to knowing the playbook.

"2 unknown TE's into draft picks"?

No way. Fasano was a 4 Star, 9th ranked TE coming out of HS with something like 40 receptions. He was the second leading receiver on Willingham's '04 team as a sophomore with 27 receptions from Quinn. He was highly regarded coming out of HS and as an underclassman. He was polished and prospered under Charlie was but was far from an unknown.

Freeman was a 3 Star, 25th ranked TE
Carlson 3 Star, 16th ranked TE
Both not as high as Fasano but both recognized talent as well.

Hiben was 4 Stars, 9th ranked like Fasano. He also had good strength numbers 330BP

Reuland was the highest touted coming out of HS at 5 Stars, 2nd ranked TE, BP 275
Yeatman was the lowest ranked TE as a 3 Star, ranked #39, BP 285

To play USC with our second string fullback and tight end, on the road, as they start to click, does not entice me one bit.

Carlson's injury is a major blow to ND's plans.

When you're talking about a guy who was going into his senior year, I don't care how many stars he had coming out of H.S. anymore. The question is, after his junior year, where would he have been drafted? Would he have been drafted at all is a better question. Yeah he was a decent plalyer, but that's about it. Charlie did the rest, and in one year his draft status rose tremendously.

But going into that year he wasn't known by anybody outside of South Bend (hence, he was an "unknown"). Same went for John Carlson before this year, same goes for Freeman.
