Wow. This is a huge pickup for NC. Wasn't Davis Little's favorite to go to UNC?

Davis is an amazing coach and recruiter, too. It's going to be awefully hard to get anyone out of that state in the future.

anyone that can do what he did for duhU has my respect. Even though he didn't do well in the pros, he is great college coach. Ala, poodle, assface spurrier, holtz, etc. Some just don't relate well to the inflated egos of NFL players. I think he'll do fairly well at NC. National title, hmmm, maybe not, but like you said, its gonna be hellacious getting recruits out of NC now.

If this is true, that is a great pick up for UNC....he is a top line coach that rebuilt that Miami program and will probably do the same for the Heels.

Maybe he's stealing a play out of the Urban Meyer playbook. Could he be using UNC to bait the 'Cons into giving him more cash?

He coached in Cleveland for 2 or 3 years and still lives there.

So, I doubt its the weather.

I think they are still just in "serious negotiations" as per the TarHeels website. tarheelblue.com doesn't say anything that confirms that either. I think it looks real good though. Some of the guys that are on his staff have begun calling other ACC coaches to inquire about facilities and players. You can read that on North Carolina's site.

According to CarolinaBlue, everything is done but the buyout clause is still being negotiated. Nothing like have your Coach already stuck on how he can get out of there!

UNC is one of those schools that could be a football power if they just knew how to sell what they've already got. They would help themselves out by investing more in the football program, also - new training facilities, etc.

They could also do better, if Dick Baddour quits dropping the ball when it comes to hiring coaches. Here's to him finally landing the big fish for the football team.

If he is working on his buy out its because he wants to pull a Mack Brown. Build up his stock again and jump to a bigger school. He must not want the Michigan State or Miami gigs or like some else mentioned is baiting the U into more $$.

This is now official. I'm sure Davis has been on the horn all night talking to his recruits and potential targets.

Not a done deal yet:

Former University of Miami coach Butch Davis is close to an agreement to become the new coach at North Carolina.

Davis

Contrary to various media reports that said Davis and the Tar Heels have completed contract talks, a North Carolina source speaking on the condition of anonymity said negotiations between Davis' agent and the university are still ongoing.

A deal "hadn't yet been finalized, but it seems we're headed in that direction," the source told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach.

North Carolina is hesitant to confirm the possible hiring of Davis because it wants the team's focus to be on Saturday's homecoming game against Georgia Tech at Kenan Stadium, multiple sources told Schlabach. A source said an announcement of Davis' hiring, barring late complications, could come as early as Monday.

Coach John Bunting was fired Oct. 23, effective at season's end. The Tar Heels are 1-8, and Bunting will depart Chapel Hill with only one winning season in his six as coach.

Davis' last job was as head coach of the NFL's Cleveland Browns, which ended in 2004 with his firing. He went 24-36 during his stay in Cleveland, leading the Browns to a 9-7 record and a playoff appearance in 2002, his second season after leaving the the Hurricanes. The Browns regressed under Davis after the '02 season.

Information from ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach and ESPN's Joe Schad was used in this report.

There's no reason for Butch Davis to take a "step-up" gig. he's already big time. He coached Miami to some pretty great levels in the mid 90's, and coached in the NFL. He would just have to bide his time until one of those spots opened up.

UNC Names Butch Davis Head Coach

UNC Names Butch Davis Head Coach

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Former NFL and college coach Butch Davis will return to the sidelines as coach at North Carolina, which is 1-9 and hasn't beaten a Division I-A team this season.

He will replace the fired John Bunting, the school said Monday. The hiring had been widely expected the past week after Davis' name rose to the top of the list of candidates.

Davis, who will turn 55 on Friday, brings a reputation for orchestrating turnarounds -- which is just what the struggling Tar Heels need. North Carolina ranks among the worst offenses and defenses in the country.

"Butch Davis became our first choice early in the process, although we did not know of his interest in us," athletic director Dick Baddour said. "We were excited to learn of his interest in Carolina and our football program and proceeded from that point. He's a first-class individual who is committed to preparing his student-athletes for success in all aspects of their lives."

Davis coached the Miami Hurricanes from 1995-2000, compiling a 51-20 record before leaving for the NFL's Cleveland Browns and leaving behind the players with whom Larry Coker won the national title in 2001. He went 24-35 with the Browns before resigning in 2004 and has worked the past two seasons in broadcasting.

School officials said Davis agreed in principle last week to take the job. Terms were unavailable and the contract will be released once the school's trustees approve it.

Baddour said none of the key figures involved in the hiring would be available for additional comment until Davis is formally introduced as coach on Nov. 27, two days after the Tar Heels play Duke in their season finale.

"The timing of my decision to consider coaching opportunities, and the opening at UNC seemed to intersect perfectly," Davis said. "Dick Baddour made my introduction to Carolina happen in a well-planned, well-organized manner and did an outstanding job of presenting the virtues of UNC -- its people, its strong commitment to both academics and athletics, as well as the exciting, active part it plays in the community. Obviously, he succeeded."

The announcement came 22 days after Bunting was fired following an embarrassing shutout loss at Virginia.

Almost immediately, speculation centered on Davis, and so did the school's search. Davis spoke of his desire to return to coaching, but didn't specify which jobs interested him. Last week, media reports linked Davis to the North Carolina opening.

"I am very impressed with Butch Davis' record as both an outstanding coach and strong advocate of academic performance," university chancellor James Moeser said. "My own personal interaction with Butch, supported by all of my conversations with faculty and administrators who have known him over the years, confirmed the view that he has the values and commitments we care about most at Carolina."

Davis is the third football coach hired by Baddour in the past decade. Baddour promoted Carl Torbush when Mack Brown left for Texas in 1997, then fired Torbush and hired Bunting in 2000.

Bunting is 25-45 in his sixth season as the coach at his alma mater, and hasn't had a winning season since his first team went 8-5 in 2001 and beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl. Bunting is owed $286,200 a year through the 2009 season.
