Anyone know anything about U of Alabama, Ole Miss?

I was accepted into the U of Alabama the other day and I expect to hear from Ole Miss pretty soon. Unfortunately, I was deferred by Auburn, which sucks, and to be honest, I think it's just a euphemism for "rejected".

So, I'm still pretty interested in Alabama and Ole Miss and I know there's a handful of southerners on this site, so I'm asking whether anyone knows anything about either school, what they've heard, or whether anyone has ever been there and what their impressions were.. so, any insight would be great, thanks!

What kind of info are you looking for? Academic, social etc. I went to school in Florida but I know people who have gone to school throughout the south. Edcuation wise, they are basically the same. Actually, outside of of IVY league and elite schools like ND, Stanford, BC, DUKE, U of Chicago, etc, most schools are about the same. A degree from Alabama is no better/worse than Ole Miss. Socially, at any of those Alabama/Miss/Louisiana schools you will find it to be straight up "Old South". Not big fans of "Yankees" and their "Yankee ways". The southern girls will love you if you're from the North though. I makes you seem dangerous. It's sad, but true. Southern Tradition is HUGE at those schools.

alabama blows! its a good drinking town if your into UA football, but if not forget it. And also, if you're not greek....its HARD to find friends. Thats just my own opinion, those may not effect your decision...just really depends on your major. Very good business school i've heard. Basically, I wouldnt go there b/c of the people and their endless amounts of "Alabama or Auburn" questioning and then they look at you like you've committed a mortal sin when you say Notre Dame ha

I've been to Ole Miss once when I was in college. Ole Miss has the hottest chicks in the nation... bar none.

Dylan's right. Greek life is everything at many southern schools, but especially the older schools. I went greek and had a blast, so it may be something good for you. I was not interested at all when I first got to school, but met some people and gave it a shot. Frats are like anything else, if you find the right people you'll have a good time.

Notre Dame is sinful in the South. I was in school in 93 when ND beat FSU #1 vs #2. What a great day. 2 Irish fans amongst 80 of our frat brothers all pulling for FSU.

Mostly social :) I don't really care too much about the academic stuff.. that sounds terrible, but I'll only begin to care about the education aspect when I actually get there.

Yeah, I've heard that. I've heard the same things about the greek system there. But I want to join a frat and hopefully I'll be "settled in" when it's time to rush. That's probably the only thing I'm worried about---not being ready for it all. I mean, this will be the first time in my life I'm thrown into a situation where I don't have any friends to depend on. So, I'll have to make 'em quick. Should be interesting.

Relevant "Office Space" quote:
"You know, minimum security prison is no picnic. I had a client in there once. He said the trick is: kick someone's ass the first day, or become somebody's bitch. Then everything will be alright."

Yah man, just make sure you pick the right fraternity. I went greek and have had some of my best memories there! When ND gets a chance to beat Bama or AU.....you might get an ass whipping when we win, if you're a pledge ;)

FYI Dont call a fraternity a frat....you wouldnt call your country a cunt would you? haha

My sister actually went to Alabama. From what I can remember it was more or less like any other small/medium town state school. Life for the town revolved around the school, and the nearby Mercedes plant. There were your stately parts of campus, your off campus hell-holes, and the strip of bars that all those towns seem to have. There was a great rib joint on the outskirts called "Dreamland Drive In Bar-B-Q". Her educational experience would probably be classified as average. Our local booster club was nice, always present our local feasts.

No where is easier to meet people than college. You have to be a pretty sad case to not meet tons of people right off the bat. Too many opportunities to do so. Damn it man, I miss college! You lucky bastage.

Yeah, well, ND will always come first, but I'll be sure to become a fan of which ever school I end up at. I'll probably need to get Tivo, too.. no way am I missing any of Clausen's snaps (or Jones' or Fraser's....or Sharpley's).

FYI Dont call a fraternity a frat....you wouldnt call your country a cunt would you? haha

I'll keep that in mind. Though, I could've sworn my brother's said it, and he's Phi Kappa Psi or however it's spelled.

I hate both of you guys. One day you're in college, President of your fraternity, girls all over the place, parties, playing volleyball in the back yard of your house in a sand volleyball court, cracking open a nice coldie in the blistering Orlando sun. The next thing you know, your 35, married, two dogs, working 9-5 and the most exciting part of your life is a trip to Home Depot on Saturday. Maybe a little Bed, Bath & Beyond if there's time. If it wasn't for UCF home games and ND football, I'd off myself.

Did you apply to Georgia?

Nope. My brother wanted me to, but for whatever reason, I decided not to. Besides, if I couldn't get into Auburn outright, I don't think I'd stand much of a chance at getting into Georgia.

I applied to Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio University, Indiana University, College of Charleston, and South Carolina.

I've heard great things, though. Everyone that goes there seems to love it.

So you're commited to the south? If the social life is something you're concerned about you should have applied to Arizona State. Always in the top 5 party schools in Playboy.

I've been to Ole Miss a couple times and the campus is beautiful. Although I haven't been to Alabama, I had a buddy that described it as the second most beautiful campus in the nation (behind ND of course). I went to undergrad at Tennessee and there's not much to look at there but, socially, it's a typical SEC school. You will never party more in your life than in the SEC so you got that going for you. Alabama and Ole Miss have a high percentage of greeks and, if you find the right one for you, it can be one of the best decisions you make as well.

Just letting you know, deferred is DEFINITELY not denied. I'm an early-deferral normal-accepted kid. I know a lot of people that are in the same boat. Don't let it get you.

Out of curiosity where did you go to school? Or are you still in school? I have a ton of friends looking at Boston University, a few looking at Fredo and Northeastern, and one already at Tufts and still another pretty much committed to getting in there to play football.

Well, my sister got into Miami University (OH) on a wait list.. and I'm pretty sure they aren't the same thing. So, that could be one thing going for me. I have applied incredibly early, so, I'm hoping they just want to see how the class shapes up before they accept/reject me.

That's good to hear.

I'm going to the fancy-pants technical school in Cambridge. Currently in school. I've got a bunch of friends at BU as well, a couple at tufts and one at BC, and they all seem to really like it.

But yeah, wait list is quite different from deferral. Wait List means that they've completed their admissions process. People on the wait list are there just in case they get a lower than expected yield from their admission offers. It's basically like backup schools, but for colleges. Deferral means that you applied early, but they don't know enough about you in relation to the rest of their applicant pool. Colleges do deny people during early. They don't defer people that they don't think are qualified. It's just that they want to see how their applicant pool shapes out. Deferral is by no means denial.

Oh. And my brother is applying to Miami OH, I think. Small world.
