Lost in the complaining of yesterday's performance, is the fact that this was only the 3rd time in school history that we've come back to win inside the final 30 seconds of the game. I don't think you guys realize how special this really was and how it will cement Brady Quinn into the fabric of Notre Dame quarterbacks.
1) Joe Montana - 35-34 victory over Houston in the Cotton Bowl
Montana, who needed chicken soup in the lockerroom to help with hypothermia, helped the Irish overcome a 34-12 deficit with 7:37 remaining. Montana ran for a 2-yard touchdown, his second touchdown of the game, with 4:15 remaining, and his 2-yard conversion pass to Kris Haines cut Houston's lead to 34-28.
Montana, who had thrown four interceptions in the game, then threw an 8-yard pass to Haines on the game's final play. Joe Unis' conversion gave Notre Dame a 35-34 victory in the coldest Cotton Bowl in history.
Statistics: 13 of 34 for 163 yards, 1 TD, 4 INT
2) Rick Mirer - 17-16 victory over Penn State in the "Snow Bowl"
Played in temperatures in the low 30's with snow showers throughout the game that left the field covered in snow, Notre Dame trailed 16-9 with 4:25 left on the clock. Irish quarterback Rick Mirer guided Notre Dame on a 12-play, 64-yard drive that culminated with a three-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Bettis, cutting the Nittany Lions' lead to 16-15 with 20 seconds left.
Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz went for the win, going for a two-point conversion and Mirer delivered. First he scrambled away from pressure toward the right sideline and found Reggie Brooks in the back right corner of the snow-covered end zone for the two-point conversion to give the Irish a 17-16 victory.
Statistics: 12 of 23 for 164 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
3) Brady Quinn - 20-17 victory over UCLA
Quinn, under pressure all day by a relentless UCLA defense, completed three straight passes in the final 62 seconds, capped by a 45-yard TD pass to Samardzija, to lead the Irish to a 20-17 come-from-behind victory over the Bruins on Saturday.
Statistics: 27 of 45 for 304 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT
Guys, this was one of the defining moments that will be relived over and over and possibly will be the signature moment for Brady Quinn. Compared to Montana's Cotton Bowl comeback and Mirer's Snow Bowl miracle, Quinn had the better day of the three.
Sometimes things happen for a reason... maybe this was one of those things. In any case, you guys witnessed greatness, resolved and history yesterday. You should enjoy it.
