He said that he thought you had to be Catholic to go to ND until he learned more while on campus. Have to wonder if that is one of the negative recruiting tactics that others use to sway kids that are ignorant of both Catholicism and ND.

Possibly but I think it is more of the typical mindset of a person raised in the south. We discussed this here ND Scheduled Gerogia. Its one of the reasons we do not get your typical elite southern athlete. Getting them on campus makes a difference.

Told Orangebloods.com (rivals site) that ND is running 6th right now behind. UF, Oregon, USC, Alabama and LSU.

Yea I didn't gather that from the recent interviews he's done but gives another perspective. Keep in mind that it wasn't a direct quote that was him stating in order his schools. The direct quotes are all very positive and basically we are going to get our chance to give this kid a different experience and he has to see if its what he wants.

I have a feeling Byron views us as a sort of "BYU" and is just giving ND credit for exceeding his very, very low expectations prior to his visit. That's what happens when you are mediocre for so many years in a row. He didn't grow up watching ND and probably had no idea ND is historically a football powerhouse.

I disagree and I think thats why we are already scheduled for an official. I think he views ND correctly its just is that the environment he wants to be in. We all love ND but there are negatives to being in South Bend when your from Florida. Is what ND offers enough, to Byron, to overcome so of those disadvantages. Thats the process he's going through. Not all kids that don't come to ND "don't get it." Some get it and choose its not for them. Kudos to him and Hilliard for that matter for trying to figure it out and not taking the easy route of "No" right out of the gates.

I did not know we were already scheduled for an OV. I'm more on board with you now.

I just keep opening this thread and am having hallucinogenic flashbacks of Lorenzo Carter's thread.

I think this is the 5-star guy that ND could get. He is smart, appears to be a good person, etc. Its obvious Alford and the school in general has made a good impression. Apparently he is savy scheme-wise if he "picked up our defense in less than an hour" so hopefully he will get up to the Stanford game and be blown away.

I will be rooting for this kid to choose ND. He is all-around impressive from what I have learned so far.

Cowart's coach, Sean Callahan, has coached at Seffner/Armwood for thirty years. Previous Notre Dame targets from Armwood - Alvin Bailey wr, Kyle Gibson safety, and Leon McQuay. Notre Dame has history with the program. It would be nice for those recruiting efforts to possibly pay off with a commitment from Byron Cowart.

At least he "gets" ND. Sounds like we need his mom to accompany him on the OV for us to have a real chance. We can't combat UF for proximity, but I think the coaches can show Byron that he can get into broadcasting with an ND degree quite easily.

Don't think we can get him unless we go 11-1 IMO.

Not 12-0, though.

This is absurd. To think a kid is going to base his decision on where to go to college on a specific record is just crazy. Especially with this kid.

Seen ND fade with 5-stars too many times when we only win 8 games. Especially with 5-stars who aren't from the Midwest. Or when we invite them all to the USC game and lose circa 2009 and 2011.

Maybe Cowart is different. Recruits say the right things all the time in interviews about ND then sign with USC or with some SEC school. I'm not holding out hope for us signing a 5-star DE from Florida unless we show we're a Top-10 team this fall.

It isn't so much about a specific record ... but a program's national ranking does play a BIG part in the decision making process.

E.g. if ND is in the hunt for the playoff all season long, and finishes in the top 10 or so, and have big wins against elite programs, they will have a much easier time recruiting a player like Cowart than if they have a season like last year (9-4 record, finish in the 20s in the AP, and a win in a who knows bowl).

It's not a coincidence that the top programs typically get the majority of the 4 and 5 star kids.

“@AnnaHScout: 5-star DE Byron Cowart answers Oregon, LSU, Clemson, Florida on ESPNU as schools standing out to him right now”

He was the DL MVP as well

We are heating up on his radar. He is a kid who has more aspirations outside of football, and has discussed his pleasure in finding that you don't have to be Catholic to appreciate the spirituality of ND.

It is funny about him thinking you had to be Catholic to attend ND. I would have thought it was a joke, considering Manti, but, living in the south, I took my daughter to swimming lessons this week. I had an ND t-shirt on and one of the instructors asked me if I was a fan. When I said yes, her next questions were "Are you Catholic," and when I answered that I was, she asked "What church do you attend her?" Nothing about ND, just my religious affiliation. Maybe there really is a belief that you have to be Catholic to be affiliated with ND!!!!

That's a question I get a lot. Not terribly surprised that many would still believe that.
I was Catholic once.
Still a fan!

Yeah, it is just something people will always associate with ND for obvious reasons. I think its pretty obvious that most of our athletes are not Catholic. It is part of our tradition though and always will be.

How is it pretty obvious most of our athletes are not Catholic?

Because you hear similar quotes from guys during recruiting

Most of our team comes from the south/coastal, bible belt, and west coast; where its predominately protestant and evangelical

You hear less and less about how a recruit is attracted to ND initially because they are Catholic and identify with the core of the university

And Espn did a segment on the "beyond Catholic" perception when Ryan Harris was on the team,

Making it pretty reasonable to suggest the majority of the team weren't altar boys

Even though he doesn't mention us as one of his standouts he says still coming to the Stanford game

I would like to see the official percentage of students at ND are Catholic. All the people I know that attended were Catholic.
