We were this close to NOT winning.....

Having seen the replay of Lambert's INT for the game winning TD. I noticed Landri's outstretched fingers about 2 or 3 inches from tipping that ball. I think if he gets a piece, Lambert probably doesn't get the INT and we'd have lost even more fingernails hoping for a miracle.

And if Lambert hadn't pushed the gunner on Zibby's punt return TD ...

And if ...

And if ...

Why would we have lost? The offense couldn't score or what?

I actually thought that Landri did barely tip the ball. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, you are right. This game was so damn close.

I told my wife last night: Right now guys are saying how kick-ass Brady Quinn is. They want to give him the game ball.

Well, if Lambert does not make that pick we might well have lost and people would be trashing him (Quinn) on all the boards today. Fate is a fickle mistress.

And if Lambert hadn't pushed the gunner on Zibby's punt return TD ND would still be leading and his ints would merely be footnotes. Lambert put 6 points on the board for ND which replaced the 6 he took off with his penalty.

I went back and watched it a bunch of times....frame by frame, slow motion, full speed....the works. His hand was right there. If he did touch it at all it didn't change the trajectory of the ball..that's kind of what I was commenting on. Regardless of Lambert's push on Zibby's return, it was at this point where we were really at miracle time and we got it. Another inch or so and Landri probably knocks the pass down or at least deflects it away from Lambert and then we're really praying. All I meant to say, it wasn't to start a "what if" argument.

go back and watch carlson's td run.he looked out of the corner of his eye and saw the back coming. It appears he tried to grab the ball with both hands, but couldn't run as fast. The defensive back lunged his fist at the ball right when carlson had his arm on the upstroke in his stride and missed.
after watching that it reminded me of the fumble fasano had last year against usc.

ok, thanks for that info. I currently don't have access to frame by frame stuff, so all I saw was the stuff they showed on TV. It was close though.

and for the above about the Carlson play reminding you of Fasano's fumble against USC, that was the exact thought that was in my mind as the play was happening.

I don't think Lambert's pick six was a make or break play. If my memory is right his INT came on third down. If he drops it or can't get to it because Landri tipped it, MSU would have punted. ND offense would have gotten the ball back with about 2:40 on the clock. They would have scored with that possession. Lambert sealed the deal for sure but at that point in the game ND was going to win it was just a matter of how.

How is it not a make or break play. It won the fucking game. Lets get off peoples asses here and be realistic. He picked it off, he scored, we won. Game over.

I had similar emotions. I thought he was wrapping up like a fullback on 4th and goal as he was running out of gas and expected to be hit. "No way am I losing this ball!"

yep....I said that to my wife after the play. Told her, watch him protect the football after he takes a quick look back and sees the defender about to catch him. That was damn impressive.

no, the game wasn't over just yet. I had memories of 1999, 2000, 2001 and probably a few other years in my mind. The game wasn't over til Lambert's second pick. Only then did I feel relief.
