Smith struggles, but delivers game-changing play

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith is riding such a wave even his worst statistical performance in a year is likely to further his Heisman Trophy candidacy.

Bothered by Penn State's secondary and sloppy conditions Saturday in Ohio Stadium, Smith still offered the signature highlight befitting many Heisman winners, while also lifting the No. 1 Buckeyes to a 28-6 victory.

Smith's 37-yard touchdown pass to freshman Brian Robiskie with 12:56 remaining extended OSU's lead to 14-3 after he retreated 15 yards behind the line and nearly into a quarterback sack that would have taken OSU out of field-goal range.

"I did one of the things that coach [Jim Tressel] always says don't do, and that's reverse field," Smith said. "You can't live by that. But Brian Robiskie stayed alive … You need moments like that when you're down and out, when things aren't going the way you want them to."

Other than that improvisation, Smith encountered nothing but trouble with a Penn State secondary that intercepted his second pass attempt of the game and his first try of the second half.

Those interceptions were Smiths' first picks in five games and 152 attempts and typified his struggles in a 12-for-22, 115-yard day.

This article was written by an obvious Buckeye fan. (Bruce Hooley covered the Big Ten for 19 years and now is host of a daily talk show on WBNS-AM1460 in Columbus, Ohio.) The defense won this game for the Buckeyes and this guy still gets credit. BQ would have been thrown under the bus by the media in this situation. Whatever.

the defense stepped up for us and quinn got a lot of credit saturday.I've faced it...until smith has a day like that and tOSU losses a game, then it is his to lose.

See the game by any chance? The first pick was not his fault.

Troy Smith is clearly the Heisman front runner and while he gets a lot of the attention with Ginn and Gonzalez, I agree with what Lou Holtz said Saturday. The Buckeye front five and Antonio Pittman do not get talked about enough. THAT is what will propel them towards a national title more than anything else: the running game.

And that pass to Robiskie is one of the five best plays you'll see all year.

It was one hell of a play. Right now, I think it's his to lose. Hopefully, Iowa takes it from him.

If Iowa and UM could strike down OSU, I woudl be that much happier.

If we are not going to the NC game...let it be UM. I would rather have the ONE team that beat us go to the NC. (assuming we don't)

Iowa being at home is key, but if tOSU gets up early...adios.

Watched a bit of that Iowa-Illinois game. U of I melted down about 6 minutes before halftime and gave up three scores. 24-7 against Illinois? A field goal in the second half? Nah, I don't think so. Maybe they were looking ahead, but you can look past Illinois and still paste them.

Ohio State wins by a couple TDs...unless it rains.

Iowa can take the Heisman from Troy Smith, but they won't take it from James Laurenitis. That's a football player, friends.

OSU got a monkey off their back in Austin. They had not fared well in regular season road night games. (who does?) Iowa would really need to slow this game down and keep their crowd in it to have a shot.

I just walked across the Ohio State campus wearing the "Brady For Heisman" t-shirt and a pair of gold ND shorts... what a boring place.. people can say all they want about ND.

I want to see them move the ball against that Buckeye defense. 9 new starters and they're killing people.

Those defensive units are very well coached there. Rarely do you see them get caught with their pants down. Everyone knows what they're supposed to do and they rarely make mistakes.

Mainly, their safeties don't nose up to the line and get smoked.

Considering the number of points that ND/MSU put up in exactly the same kind of weather (and possibly worse) isn't this a tired act? I'm sick of hearing how it was the weather that kept OSU from scoring on PSU.

Well, in defense of the Suckeyes (never thought I would defend them)...they have REAL grass and plenty of mess. The Spartans have that sexy Real Turf stuff. So you get traction when wet. I only saw a few slips due to it.

However, it does not excuse the fact that they only had 14 points in 3.75 quarters of play against a mediocre PSU team.
