Here's another Q that some won't like either

But is anyone else viewing the 10 year contract in a little different light right now? I was against locking him up past his original 6 year deal from the start and am more convinced now than ever that ND pressed the panic button and set a very bad precedent. My logic is as follows:

1. He was extended when his record was 5-2. As it turns out, that really wasn't an outstanding achievement as last years schedule looked really tough, but didn't end up being nearly as tough as it looked.

2. As it turns out, Weis hasn't yet beaten a good team. His best game was a 3 point loss USC. What will he ask for when he actually accomplishes something like win a BCS bowl, or title or 11 games in a season or a title?

3. What precedent have we set for other future coaches?

We've been manhandled twice in the last 4 games. Twice in Weis' first 15. That's alarming. Of course, I agree that he needs a good 3-4 seasons before we should try to render judgement. He needs to have a chance to get his recruits in place. But in the light of the last 4 games, that contract extension is looking like a potential liability and premature at best. Why would anyone ever need a 10 year contract anyway?

Absolutely not. If Weis is coaching up these kids, what is he going to do with a roster full of 4-5 star prospects?

OH MY GOD!!! Are you seriously going to discuss Weis's future right now? This is a silly ass arguement. He will be fine, the guy is a much better coach than Ty was, let's be perfectly honest, has a much better work ethic, admits his failures and shortcomings, like yesterday and doesn't rely on ND's history for recruiting, give this guy time for GOD's sakes!!

Weis' future wasn't exactly the topic. I was really asking more specifically about the decision to extend his contract out to 10 years. I thought the extension was premature. His original 6 year deal was just fine.

I believe in rewarding excellance. I see a coach that has done a good job, but haven't yet seen excellance.

One other thing, ND had to lock CW up, there were NFL teams coming around and showing interest in him big time, ND had to lock him up, because what recruit wants to committ themselves when the head coach might not be there for their 4 years? We all know that coaching plays a huge part in their decision.

This article provides a lot of ammo for the "Why are we giving preferential treatment to Weis" posters.

"The lopsided loss also led some in the media to question whether Weis, who was given a 10-year contract before he finished his first season at Notre Dame, has been given too much credit too early. After all, both he and Tyrone Willingham had identical 11-4 records after 15 games -- and both suffered embarrassing losses in their 15th game -- the Irish were beaten 38-0 at Michigan."

"While publicly, Weis was taking the brunt of the blame, privately some Notre Dame players were hearing from Weis. He said he planned to meet individually with players that he thought deserved a bigger share of the criticism for not playing as well as expected.
"I let them know that, 'Hey, it's going to be this way, or we'll just have to move you out, move somebody else in,"' Weis said."

"But in college football, only two national champions since 1991 have had a loss -- and both those teams lost by a touchdown or less."

I've got Coach W's back fully, but I'd be lying if I stated that EVERY thought mentioned in the orig. post hasn't crossed my mind at some point, even before the Mich game...just have to wait and see if he can continue recruiting and get some help on D... I have no doubt we'll win pleanty of big games if he can... my doubts come from if he will conitnue to recruit and start getting some big boys on Def... time will tell

Leave Charlie Weis out of all this! He is a damn good person and one helluva coach. He's still playing with willinghams players. It's only year 2. I knew from the begining of this year that we wouldnt win a NC. It's too early. If you ask me I think Rick Minter should be fired and thrown off the campus. I didnt like him when he was here with Holtz and I'll be damned if I like him now.

When Weis was with the Pats for all those years and all those wins, he got to at the very least have a say in who his offensive players were. Im sure it was much more than that, but he needs to have time to get his kind of guys and the players that will fit into the system he wants. Ill agree I think the 10 yr deal was premature, but it was a way for Weis to say hes in no way leaving ND, which is good in a number of ways, especially recruting wise.

I do not however think his contract is a liability, ND is lucky to have him. Many of you do not know his past in the NFL, I am a huge pats fan and followed his career very closely. His players and philosophy will have nd looking very good in the future, its tough to win, weve seen what kind of players are in this class of Willinghams, when you face a Michigan team that gets a top 5 class every year, and has that talent at all levels. Im upset about the loss, but in no way worried.

He's trying to make lemonade out of lemons. I don't really see the extension as an issue.

I also realize that next year we are in a world of hurt given who is leaving.

However, even with this loss we are playing better than all of 2003 & 2004.

I think we will actually be better next year...we have some talented freshman...with a year in the system will be far superior to the De De De's we have now!
