Report from Behind Enemy Lines - Ann Arbor

Living in Ann Arbor is never easy for a Notre Dame fan and alumnus. Sure it's been great beating them the past few years, but you always worry about wearing your ND gear around town, especially when you're going out to eat (what's taking them so long with my food back in the kitchen?). You'll be walking down the street and someone's eyes dart to your ND shirt, then suddenly a frown appears. Yes, it feels great, but it's tougher to make friends.

Then there's the media. TV, radio and newspapers always talking about how Michigan can't beat Ohio State and Notre Dame. Should Lloyd Carr be fired, yada, yada, yada. But one week every year, I listen to those radio stations and read those newspaper articles and maybe have a unique perspective on the UofM psyche.

For UofM this game is a test of manhood. It's like, if they win this game the seniors can graduate with honor, otherwise, they will be haunted forever by what could have been. It worries me that this game may mean alot more to Michigan than it does to Notre Dame. It's similar to the ND/USC game last year where USC was focused on the National Championship and ND was just focused on beating USC.

The analogy being used around here is Pittsburgh Steelers versus Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs last year. It's smashmouth versus skill. Size and strength versus complicated schemes. I expect Michigan to come out hitting hard, several cheap shots, fights and blood on the field.

Some keys:
1) ND will need to match Michigan's intensity and don't sell out to stop the run. We don't want a repeat of Ohio State where every play-action-pass goes for a touchdown. Luckily Michigan doesn't have Troy Smith, Holmes and Ginn, but still their receivers and tight end can hurt us. Discipline is key.
2) Flex some of our new-found depth, especially on the DLine to keep our guys fresh going into the second half where the game is likely to be close.
3) Control Michigan's front seven with a steady diet of screens, draw plays and quick slants.
4) Win the battle of turnovers and special teams.

nice thoughts. and is it just me, or is this the first time in a long time that we're really favored in this game? that does scare me just a little bit, but I'm sure the guys will be ready.

Yeah...for some reason I don't like being favored either. It almost seems like a curse or something. LOL

You think "just beating" the opponent is somehow more motivation than playing for the national title?

What is wrong with South Bend? I grew up there, and have very fond memories of living in that area. Our house was 1/4 mile from ND...we loved it.

Knute pretty much summarized what this game means for us.

The only thing I'll add to his excellent commentary is what this game means for Lloyd. Right now, purely from an objective perspective, I don't think we have enough players to defeat OSU, especially in Columbus. People might actually cut him some slack if we lose this year, because we are an inferior team. However, if he loses to Nd this year, the same way he lost to both teams last year, coupled with the fact that we have a horrible record against big opponents, then I think he'll be forced to "resign." So this game means a lot for him, too.

I'm sure LLoyd knows it's important to him, but do the players know how important it is for him. And, even more important, do they stand behind him enough to want him to keep his job? Or are there those underclassmen who would maybe like to move on? I know they're all competitors and want to win, it's human nature. But does LLoyd being on the "hotseat" provide any motivation for them? Motivation goes a long way in college sports. I'm not trying to stir anything up, I honestly don't know how things are over there in Ann Arbor.

I would say if Lloyd doesn't win a national championship this year he's gone. The amount of talent Mich gets year in and year out, there is no excuse for why Lloyds teams haven't produced.

If this is the case, I wouldn't consider that a fair deal at all.

And you have to think that somewhere in Michigan's mind, they feel like Ohio St. will probably be a game they lose, so they have to win this game.

First it was why people hate ND and now South Bend. I find your comments quite pathetic assuming you are a true ND fan.

He's not an ND fan. He's a Michigan fan living in South Bend. Probably not much fun the past couple of years...

Actually, I like our UofM cross-posters. They've been pretty gracious guests given all of the UofM slamming going on. I wish them and their team all the best when they fact Ohio State. :)

I love seeing The Dame the favorite. Maybe a touchdown is a bit much, but I dont see us losing to the Wolveverbitches. Matterof fact I see us and Ohio State in a rematch this time for the championship.

Thanks for the good wishes vs O$U.

But to set the record straight--I don't live in south bend and never have. I have visited the area 20+ times. One of my oldest friends grew up there.
