We squeaked this one out. Be grateful for the win.

They have some SERIOUS work to do and things to think about if they are going to win more than 9 this year.

Is anyone else pumped with the way Duke played tonight?

I especially liked the way Duke played and the way Thomas ended the game with the intensity he did. The TE's also played very well....Price was excellent punting the ball....Gioia needs to be benched/gone/or never appear again. Prince did a good job picking up blitz's. Grimes and West are dangerous KR's. The defense didn't play terrible and will make improvements especially if the D-Line plays at all...which they didn't tonight. The O-Line must step up and stop making foolish penalties that cost us chances. Zibby played solid but improvement can be made. DW really improved in the 2nd half and stepped up. John Sullivan did a great job tonight he was the only O-Line that played well. Crum played solid but there is lots of room for improvment. The kickoffs and coverage were very good, for a change.

well on the positive side, we wont see another d like this all year long. No other team we play will blitz 80% of the time so this was a great, hard fought victory. It could have been better but we won!

There are lot of positives.

GT scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes and a few fans were dissing the coaches and players. GT scored 0 points in the next 40 minutes.

GT was held to 258 TOTAL YARDS. Nobody was held that low in '05.

GT was held to 12-24 138 yds 1 TD Passing

GT was held to 120 yds Rushing

GT was 2-10 on 3rd Down Conversions

GT was the #1 Ranked WR 7 catches 110 yds 1 TD.

ND averaged 44 yds/punt

ND averaged 40 yds/KO Return

ND made critical 3rd down plays on Offense AND Defense

ND 7/16 on 3rd Down Conversions

ND 1/1 on 4th Down Conversions

ND 1-0 against a solid team not an Idaho, Marshall, or Akron!

ND had NO turnovers!

Negatives

ND had 11 penalties for 80 yds. (ESPN had 110 yds but corrected it)

ND only had 3.7 yds rushing.

ND didn't score the 50+ points, the fans took for granted they would.

ND fans now should know why freshman lineman don't start their first game, particularly at OT against veteran DLs, but they won't remember.

ND fans will still badmouth the DBs despite giving up 1 big play, 45 yds to the #1 Ranked WR.

ND 0-2 on FGAs. Realistically should have expected 1-2

Good God that was a killer!

Um.. I don't know where to begin. First of all, Brady's probably going to be picking up some heat from the analysts for not throwing a TD pass. But I honestly think this was one of his best 2-3 games. He showed toughness. He shows it every game, but from that 12 yard 1st down pass to John Carlson---where he took a hit on the throw---in the 1st Quarter to the physically dangerous, final QB draw in the 4th, Brady showed more courage than I've seen on a field in years.

I havn't begun to look at the DVD I burned, but I still can't determine how well our O-Line played. The GT defense was definitely pumped for the game and that guy, Anoui (?) played awesome. So does the O-Line deserve most of the blame? Or is the GT defense that deserving of credit?

Regardless, we can't allow Brady to get hit like that all season.

Good news: the Shark isn't a one-hit wonder. McKnight really is back. Young continuously pissed off defensive players throughout the game, which means he was doing something right. The Nickel/Dime sets worked well. The defense, overall, played great. Price was great. D-Walk on the ground. No one got hurt. We survived, we won.

Bad news: the kicking game royally sucked. If Gioia or Burkhart don't get it worked out, we won't make it through another close game. Penalties. Brady taking as many hits as he did in the Fiesta Bowl. An offense that looked.. stale? Possibly the O-Line play, I'll check it out later. Still didn't see much pressure on the QB.

You also have to remember though like someone stated GT turned into Tiller in the 2nd half....Johnson could have killed us had they just thrown him the ball more. The DB's played decent tonight I will say that but their is room for plenty of improvment.

Actually, the kicking game didn't suck, just Gioia did. Our kickoff unit (Renkes) was booming the ball and Price was booming the ball on punts.

That was me, too. Now did Nix and Gailey get stupid for the last 40 minutes of the game or did the coverage improve? I couldn't tell from my TV angle. They threw up a stat in the 3rd or 4th quarters that showed Shark and Johnson have similar # of catches on similar # of attempts. Johnson had better yards and the games only receiving TD (that wasn't called back) and Rhema turned out to be NDs leading receiver.

And Special Teams coverage on punts and K.O.s was solid.

Yeah, absolutely. I was being too general when I said 'the kicking game royally sucked'. I did say Price did a great job, but I should have mentioned our KRs were great, as were our kickoffs and coverage.

My last comment for a while. I'm just relieved. When we were down 10 points and I made the realization that we could very well lose, I thought to myself that if we pulled it off, I'd sleep better than ever. Well, it happened, and I feel great. It wasn't our greatest game, but we survived.

I can only hope that the experience will have rid our players of the pre-season rust and that the team will be much more comfortable in the home setting against Penn State and Michigan.

Another piece of good news is that this was training for the Michigan State game, which will also be played at 8:00 PM. Also, we won a close game against a team that will probably have a strong record at the end of the year. That's more street-cred to us.
