Apparently Notre Dame is picking up interest in this Texas DE. While he plays DE in high school, he may be a ILB prospect on the next level. USC just offered, so they must have seen something they really liked, too.

dman88: What's all the hype about DE Sam Acho? How did his stock shoot up so fast? I saw he was ranked #40 in the state on rivals.

Todd Wills: dman -- great question. Where did this guy come from? Acho is a guy who has come on strong in summer camps. And his highlight film has started getting out there. So suddenly the buzz. Acho says he's looking at Stanford, USC and Virginia. Others like Texas, Texas A&M and OU could become contenders. Yes, the stock has risen fast.

When the highlight film of Dallas St. Mark's defensive end Sam Acho got out in the open, it became an everyday occurrence of new offers showing up at his doorstep. That hasn't slowed down one bit.

The 6-foot-2, 250-pounder has a scholarship offer that now includes written ones from Stanford, Oklahoma State, Virginia, SMU, TCU, Tulsa, and Iowa. Texas A&M wants him to come in for a visit before it's official and Southern Cal has verbally offered. Oklahoma was also a team that Acho is receiving interest from.

Three early favorites are out in front, but by no means is this a final list.

"I like Stanford, Southern Cal, and Virginia quite a bit, but the rest of the teams are right behind those," Acho said. "USC it's a school that everyone knows is great in both academics and athletics. The community of Los Angeles, I just love the weather there. Stanford is an excellent academic school and I love the weather there as well.
"Virginia, it's one of the top schools in the nation academically and coach Al Groh, I really like him a lot. He's a very personable guy. He seems like a great coach."

Acho, who obviously is putting just as much stock in academics as athletics, is looking at every factor before making a college decision. Visits will tell him a lot.

"I plan on getting out to Virginia in about two weeks," Acho said. "Coach Groh is on vacation right now, so I'm waiting for him to get back before I head out there. I've been to USC once for their camp, but I think I may go back. I'll probably get out to Stanford in August."

Oklahoma and Texas A&M are also possibilities for visits from the talented Acho.

"I'm not really sure when I'll commit," Acho said. "I'm going to try and wait a little longer to kind of see which one school stands out to me. I mentioned the three favorites, but I haven't found just one that stands above the rest.
"Maybe after I visit some of the others, I'll know."

In The Film Room Sam Acho

In The Film Room Sam Acho

Freebie by Tim Prister

http://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=565732

When one of our astute Irish Illustrated subscribers first informed me of Sam Acho, the 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive end from Dallas, I didn’t watch the footage right away because, after all, he hadn’t been offered a scholarship.
<!--Start Image--><SCRIPT language=Javascript>document.write(insertImage('/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/SAMACHO7_13150.JPG', '', 0, 220, 150, 1, '', 'Rivals.com', 1154174586000, '', 961, 'Align=Left'));</SCRIPT><!-- End Image-->But my friend insisted that this was one player I wanted to see. He was right.
It’s hard to imagine that Acho flew under the radar as long as he did. Scholarship offers from Southern California, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Stanford, and Virginia have suddenly made Acho a must see. His performance in USC’s Rising Senior Camp in June—a camp he wasn’t even invited to—really seemed to get the ball rolling.
Acho is a stud. Listed with 4.7 speed in the 40 (that’s what he ran at the USC camp), that may be accurate, but it’s hard to believe that it is. All I know is his 10-yard dash time is quite impressive. Coming off the edge at defensive end, Acho will run around you, he’ll jump over you or he’ll run through you. He seems to enjoy doing all three en route to the quarterback. His 34-inch vertical jump is a testament to his athletic skills. His 300-pound bench is solid but should improve if his work ethic in the weight room matches his intensity on the field.
Acho is very quick off the snap of the ball, and then he employs these short, rat-a-tat-tat steps that puts an offensive lineman on his heels. His body language screams, “I’m coming to get you!” Acho plays strong, mean and hard. He has a relentlessness about him. He plays with an anger, a fervor for contact. You might even say he plays nasty.
At tight end, he catches the ball and runs with abandon. Have you ever seen a tight end-around play? It’s a scary sight with Acho coming around the corner (although there’s one clip where he’s carrying the ball with one hand. Coach Weis wouldn’t approve).
The impressive thing is that he’s just tapping his talent if he’s listed as a three-star performer.
Notre Dame apparently has entered the running for Acho, who earlier this week called Southern California and Virginia the two schools he’s most interested in. In another statement, he said, “USC, Virginia and Stanford are up there.” He also said he’s excited about Nebraska.
Now Notre Dame is turning up the intensity, but the Irish reportedly have yet to offer a scholarship. The Texas Longhorns are another program that has shown an interest but apparently have not offered a scholarship either
Maybe the 6-foot-2 size isn’t tall enough for defensive end. (He could easily make the move to tackle/three-technique if necessary.) Maybe the 4.7 time has scared people away. You wouldn’t think the 3.5 grade point average, 1200 SAT and 26 ACT while at St. Mark’s High would be a hindrance.
Why is Acho just a three-star? Sometimes in the great football state of Texas, some guys get caught up in the numbers. I’ll be quite surprised if Sam Acho isn’t considered a four-star prospect in the weeks to come.
It doesn’t matter how many defensive ends the Irish have lined up. I wouldn’t hesitate snagging Acho. The Irish lose Victor Abiamiri and Chris Frome after this season. Travis Leitko is a short-timer upon his return. Ronald Talley and Justin Brown each have three years of eligibility heading into the 2006 season, but the Irish can’t get enough quality defensive line prospects. Justin Trattou could be a tackle, not an end. The Irish don’t know quite yet what will happen with Martez Wilson and Ben Martin.
If Acho is available, get him. This guy is a four-star talent…at least.

Word is that the Richetti Jones bit was all a smoke screen and he's going to Texas. Acho getting an offer kind of contradicts that.

I thought the same thing, since they are similar players. Do they have room for both? They are favored for Barksdale as well. I'll tell you one thing, they are going to have one heck of a front seven in a couple years.

That may very well be the group that is charged with stopping the likes of Clause, Kamara and hopefully Benn, Little and Allen.

They both play the same DE position, but from the looks of the offer sheet I think the Horns only want one guy there. Jones, Acho and a kid named Washington from Louisiana have offers there.

They have only missed on three guys that they've offered to this point: Mallet, Derrick Stephens and Phelon Jones.

Patience may be a virtue Notre Dame needs from Sam Acho. <!--Start Image--><!-- End Image-->The 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive end from Dallas, Texas has exploded onto the recruiting circuit in recent weeks, going from a little-known prospect from St. Mark's to a national name coveted by Southern California, Texas, Stanford, Iowa and Nebraska. Acho believes Notre Dame could be close to pulling the trigger on a scholarship offer as well, and sooner may be better for the Irish considering the defender is toying with the idea of making a commitment before the start of his senior season. "I don't want to rush anything, but I just want to get it somewhat out of the way before I get deep into the season," Acho said. "I really like Notre Dame. I should talk to them pretty soon to see where I stand. It's a great football program and they'd definitely be up on my list."
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Acho visited Texas last week, a trip that included him walking away with a scholarship offer. The Longhorns have been able to pick and choose prospects from their backyard this year, and virtually any in-state recruit offered by Mack Brown has found his way to Austin in short order.

That means Notre Dame could end up in a similar position with Acho as the Irish did with Tray Allen, John Chiles and Andre Jones, three other Texan prospects that made verbal commitments to the Longhorns. An offer from Notre Dame however, might just give Acho pause enough to evaluate a few options away from home.
"I really like Notre Dame," Acho said. "I just recently got in contact with one of the coaches. I think they're in the process of looking at my highlight tape. I should talk to them pretty soon to see where I stand. It's a great football program. They'd definitely be up on my list."
Acho isn't locked into a list of leaders but put Notre Dame in his top five alongside Texas, USC, Virginia and Stanford. Acho has already visited the Cavaliers along with the Longhorns. He had planned to visit Stanford this summer but couldn't schedule the trip.
"Those are some of the schools that I'm seriously considering," Acho said. "I really enjoyed my time at Texas, and Texas is definitely one of the schools that I like. They said I could take as long as I needed because they kind of found out about me later than most schools. They said I could take as long as I needed to make a decision."
While Acho wouldn't mind wrapping up his recruitment before the season kicks off, he's open to the prospect of taking official visits during the year. The future business major said Notre Dame would likely get an official visit if the Irish offered.
As intriguing as Acho's recruitment could be, so too will be where on the field the defender uses his skills. He said he could play as a traditional defensive end in a 4-3 alignment or double as an outside linebacker if he's working in a 3-4. Acho said some schools are even recruiting him as a tight end, but he believes his future is on defense.
"It all depends on what style of defense I'm playing in," Acho said.
As for what defense Acho chooses, the Irish are hoping for a delay in that decision.

With only one more DE needed and Ben Martin being the key target for that spot, where can Acho fit in?

I'm still not convinced some of these 250 lb DE's may not be destined to play DT. I know you like the pure big hoss DT's, but it's common practice at some major programs to bring in the athletic guys and build them into the DT position.

We don't need every new DT to be ready immediately.

i agree with scooper here. i think this offer is more of a reaction to the defensive tackle position than anything else. i might be off, but the numbers seem to point that way and 250 lb is in the middle here. i think martin and neal are their ends and they are lighter than that. 250 is kind of nowheres man, he might not be quick enough to come off the edge as a passrusher but with adding a couple pounds he can do something in the middle. he seems like DT project to me as well.

Actually, I don't feel good about Martin at all, so maybe this kid is going to be an end. Especially considering Tez is being recruited as an OLB.

DE is about as big of a need as DT and OT are. I'd probably put DE third on the list.

Is Texas done recruiting? It seems like they got everyone they went after. Really impressive recruiting at Texas. That Mack Brown must have quite a sales pitch.

National Title when. Not this year, maybe next year, but after that Jimmy and his crew will be on the prowl. So when exactly, other than next year, will they win it?

they just won the national title

He's been getting recruiting classes like this since he got there. The NC from last season is just a new portion of the deal.

I can't see Richetti Jones going to Texas now. I only hope he doesn't go to Florida.

In reality, the title team only had one elite class, as I pointed out in this thread:

http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9733&highlight=texas+scout+rivals

The classes on that team were ranked thusly:

Scout
2002-#1
2003-#18
2004#10
1005#15

Rivals
2002-#1
2003-#15
2004-#10
2005-#20

I agree with you. I hope he skips UF. Okie St. would not be bad.
