The NFL only allows players to wear Nike or Reebok shoes during games because of a marketing partnership.

But Reggie wore some custom, gold-plated Addidas cleats in Saturday's preseason game.

We doubt Addidas is going to have any problem picking up this fine, but it's wierd because Addidas owns Reebok now; you'd think there would be some way around this?

there is a way around it...we was told to tape up his cheats so that you could not see the adidas sign. however, he did not and therefore the fine. I believe he has been quoted as saying that he doesn't like to tape up his cheats. so, there may be many more fines on teh way. I will look to see if I can find that quote.

Btw, a UsaToday article is reporting that adidas is taking care of the fine

Here is the quote about taping is cleats.

Also, I was at this game and when the mascot hit McPherson...it could have been one of the funniest things I have seen on a football field. However, it sucks that the player was injuried. As a resident of Nashville (and as someone who goes to the Titans games...not so much as a huge fan...Go Bears...but its live pro football) it will be interesting to see the aftermath.

That is odd, but funny.

Gold plated cleats...LOL I am not a big fan of showboats, but there is just something about which tickles my sense of humor.

Go Reggie!!! LOL

Go to the adidas website and look at their football sections (mainly the bush section) all the pictures in the background are of ND players.

http://www.adidas.com/us/sports/americanfootball/content/default.asp?strCountry_adidascom=us&strBrand_adidascom=performance#

That is Funny both backgrounds behind Williams and Bush are of ND. One looks like Fasono diving in the end zone against the Vols. The is a nice zoom of an Irish Helmet. Plus, the smaller photos are alot of Irish Players as well.

Addidas will pay the fine, and supposedly he'll wear them all season long and Addidas will just pay the bill. It would only amount to $160,000, and Addidas is getting a lot of exposure from this so thats pretty much peanuts...

Adidas better give that marketing rep a raise! They couldn't buy that publicity for $160,000.

21 years ago Jim McMahon was fined $5K for wearing an Adidas headband. The next week he wore a headband that read "R-o-s-e-l-l-e". The commissioner laughed but the fine stood.

With today's salaries and endorsement deals that's $5K is lunch money. The NFL can put some teeth in it by having the referee make his leave the field for illegal/improper equipment. If you have the colored helmet or jersey you don't get to play. If your faceguard is the wrong size you don't get to play. Shoes don't comply; you don't get on the field. First time a flag, then ejection. The Players Union could take it to court but I don't think they want to open that can of worms either. There aren't enough deals to spread around the Union.
