This is my preferred kicking/punting recruiting from the 2008. Hopefully we pass on Belmonte in 2007 and what not. This kid is the read deal.

Check out the above picture. It was sent to us courtesy of his dad (one proud papa) and the Westerville Central Touchdown Club. Good folks! Definitely the one kicker/punter I hope we press hard for and take in 2008.

I know a few kids from Westerville Central.. I've heard his name thrown around before. He must also be a soccer player or something, other-wise, with that size he'd be playing a different position. I play SS and only bench/squat a little more than he does.

You never hear much about kickers, though.

I have been priviledged enough to exchange emails with Ben's father Tim and he had the Westerville Central AD send me this bio on Ben. I'd like to say I've received such welcome response on other prospects that I've inquired about, but nobody has been as helpful as the family and friends surrounding Ben.

You know what they say about kids with good support systems. Anyhow, I think Ben should be out #1 kicking/punting target for the class of 2008 as he sounds like just the kind of kid that succeeds at Notre Dame.

Anyhow, onto the bio:

Introduction
Ben Buchanan is a 16 year old Sophomore two sport Scholar-Athlete at Westerville Central High School in Central Ohio. His goal is to become the very best place kicker and punter in high school, college and (GOD willing) professional football and he hopes to use each opportunity to help others in their faith and families. Based on his accomplishments and accolades during his first 2 years in high school, many believe he is well on his way.

Character

I believe Ben’s greatest gifts lie in the realm of his personal faith, community spirit and work ethic.. Ben strongly believes in giving back to others less fortunate. He recently volunteered and traveled with me on a week long medical missionary trip to Honduras, Central America to help the people ravaged by Hurricane Mitch. Ben worked long hours in the pharmacy and played soccer with the local children who didn’t even have shoes to wear. He is active in our church working on Sundays in a local YMCA soup kitchen with his two younger brothers, my wife and myself. He respectfully helps in the preparation, serving and clean up of meals to homeless families. He is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Central High and actually helped start an FCA Huddle at Genoa Middle School. Faith is at the heart of what motivates this young man and he truly wants to use his gifts to help others in need. Ben and his two younger brothers are raised in a family where character does matter both on and off the field!

Academics

Academically, Ben has achieved at the highest level as an Honor student. He has a 3.7 GPA, (4.00) in the Honors program at Central High. He was selected by his teachers to receive the Outstanding Student Achievement Award in Health Sciences. He was again selected by his teachers to serve on the crucial Superintendent’s Advisory Committee, one of only three students in his class of 450. He is a Four-time Scholar Athlete award winner coinciding with his four varsity seasons thus far as a freshman and sophomore (2-football, 2-baseball) and he has remained on the Honor Roll every quarter in High School and Middle School. He will continue to pursue his Honors and Advanced Placement Curriculum during his junior and senior year.

Athletics
: Football
During his Freshman (2004) year, Ben earned the varsity place kicking position. This was actually his third year kicking having kicked in middle school under the direction of former Buckeye and 4 year starter Dan Stultz; at age 12, Ben was selected the outstanding kicker and punter at the Ray Guy Kicking Academy at Carnegie-Mellon University. Ben had an outstanding Freshman year earning not only a varsity letter but amazingly he was selected to the ALL CENTRAL DISTRICT 1st team, ALL OHIO 2nd team in Division 2 as well as the All Dispatch-Agonis team. Ben was the only Freshman in the state of Ohio selected to the All State, All District and All Agonis teams at all positions and in all 6 divisions! His longest field goal in a game was 44 yards and he was automatic on extra points. In his most challenging game and despite two time outs by the opposing team, Ben demonstrated ice in his veins by kicking the game winning field goal with 11 seconds remaining against OCC rival Olentangy. What is even more remarkable, he suffered what could have been a season ending ankle fracture on that play; a head-hunter broke through the line and punished his plant leg. Yet through true grit and determination along with plenty of ice and a tape cast, Ben made every remaining kick in the final three games of the season to help his team. He finished the year 7-9 on field goals (none missed, two blocked). For his extraordinary effort and courage, Ben was selected by his coaches as a two-time special teams player of the week and a Scholar-Athlete. A personal highlight that year was practicing with 2005 Groza award winner and Buckeye All American Mike Nugent.

Athletics
: Baseball

During his Freshman (2005) baseball season, Ben lettered as the starting varsity shortstop and right handed pitcher. He started every game in the infield and batted in the No. 2 hole leading his team in walks and bat control. He had a winning record as a starting varsity pitcher with the second lowest ERA. However, the award Ben was most humbled by was the Coach’s Award given annually by the coaches to the hardest working, most humble and dedicated varsity athlete. That is why I am writing you because Ben would never tell you about himself. He is a genuinely humble and hard working young man who has earned the respect of his coaches, teachers, parents and clergy.

Athletics
: Football

During Ben’s Sophomore (2005) year, he simply had fewer opportunities but clearly made the most of it. He worked extremely hard in the weight room and it showed in his game. He also earned the varsity punting job and served as a reserve quarterback. His kick-offs routinely went well into the end zone for a touchback. His leg strength increased allowing him to hit field goals from 59 yards (as a sophomore!) on numerous occasions in practice and he often practiced with no tee. Again, he was automatic on extra points (none missed, one blocked, 23/24). He had fewer field goals chances but maintained his accuracy going 5-7. Amazingly Ben handled all the punting duties despite fracturing a bone in his hand while playing quarterback during the 7th game of the season. Once again, he demonstrated toughness by refusing to let an injury keep him from helping his team. Ben is a football player, not a soccer player who kicks a football part-time. The lesson he learned from the injury during his freshman year was that a football player leads by example and determination. Indeed, despite the fracture and the bulky cast on his left hand, Ben handled every punt snap cleanly and punted for over a forty-two yard average during the final three games of his season. He made every remaining kick to help his team through a tough year. He again earned a varsity letter in football and was selected by his opposing Division 1 coaches to the 1st team ALL OHIO CAPITAL CONFERENCE (one of only 2 sophomores) and All Central District, Honorable mention team.

Athletics
: Baseball

Ben is now back in the weight room following a stellar (2006) Sophomore varsity baseball season where he batted .385 (.437 slugging %, .477 on base percentage) and lead his team in victories on the mound in arguably the toughest division 1 conference in Ohio, the OCC Cardinal. The OCC Cardinal has the No. 1 (Olentangy) and No. 3 (Dublin Scioto) ranked teams in Ohio as of the latest state poll. Ben just learned last night that he was selected by his Division 1 opposing coaches to an ALL OHIO CAPITAL CONFERENCE Baseball team. He will continue to hone his baseball skills this summer in an elite Ohio legion league.

Work ethic

Ben continues to dedicate considerable time and effort into perfecting his kicking/punting skills under the direction of Dan Stultz and his new high school kicking coach, Rodney Chenos, who kicked the game winning field goal in the Division 3, 2000 National Championship game (Stagg Bowl) giving Mt. Union its fifth national Championship. Presently Ben is working out 5 days a week with National Strength and Conditioning trainer, Mike Mayhew, CSCS to continue to increase his power and flexibility. Ben will be attending football camps this summer at Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Miami, Buckeye Kicking Academy, and Top Recruits. Ben, who just turned 16 on February 21, is now just shy of 6'0" and weighs 185 lbs and will play this season at 190 lbs while maintaining his lean 9% body fat and flexibility. He will also play wide receiver this season to better utilize his size, strength and hands. In the words of his kicking coach and former Buckeye and All Big Ten Kicker, Dan Stultz, "In my four years as the starting place kicker for the Ohio State Buckeyes, I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of young athletes at various camps across the country. I have seen many phenomenal kickers, but none with the work ethic and drive that Ben Buchanan possesses".

In summary, Ben is a blue chip place kicker/punter nationally and Ohio’s outright statistical leader in the entire class of 2008. He recently received regional and national acclaim by Bill Kurelic at Rivals.com.

His numbers are very impressive. I'd say right now he probably is one of the top 3 kickers in the Class of 2008, if not the top overall. He definitely is one of the most physical kickers I've seen in the past couple years.

I'm glad we didn't get Kai Forbath. I'll take this kid in 2008 in a heartbeat. Not only that, he is a smart kid with a very nice family. I've had the pleasure of exchanging emails with his father on a number of occasions and he is a good guy.

Go get him, Charlie!

Ben recently competed in the Notre Dame kicking camp held in late June. His dad said they loved the campus and enjoyed Notre Dame very much. Oh yeah, he's very interested in the Irish.

Make it happen Charlie!

Sounds like a perfect fit for Notre Dame! Family values, work ethic, althletic and academic excellence. Being from Ohio and having been tutored by Ohio State grads, would the Buckeyes have to be considered and early favorite? Aside from Notre Dame, has he expressed an interest in any other schools? Did anyone have an opportunity to see this young man at the Notre Dame kicking camp? There's always a need for a good kicker (See New England Patriots - Adam Venetieri - three Super Bowls - three point (clutck field goal victories). Sounds like a keeper! Good luck, in whatever decision you make. You obviously have strong family backing and guidance. Glad you enjoyed the Notre Dame campus. Good luck in the 2006 and 2007 seasons and in whatever decision you ultimately make regarding you future!

Just a note to update you on an incredible day this past Saturday for Ben at the Buckeye Kicking Academy. As you may know, Mike Nugent (2005 Groza winner), Andy Groom (2002 All-American), and Dan Stultz (2000 All-Big Ten kicker) were in Columbus this Saturday for the Buckeye Kicking Academy held at Upper Arlington High School. NBC 4-TV did a segment on the camp.

This was a select camp of about 40 of the best kickers/punters in Ohio and Central Ohio invited by Stultz. Invitations were sent out to kickers across the state and frankly the competition was outstanding due to the star power of Nugent and Groom. According to Stultz, the level of competition was higher than some notable national camps. Ben attended the camp as a combo (kicker/punter); yet the final competitions included both combos as well as pure Kickers and Punters.

Two competitions were held (1.) Punting- which Ben won 1st place! (2.) Kicking- which Ben also won on a 60 yard field goal in the final! The kicking competition was especially tough with five other kickers hitting field goals from 55 yards! (Candidly, this was the most talented group of kickers I've seen at any of the camps this year).

Ben was the only kicker in the entire camp to hit the 60 yard field goal which would tie the state record set by former Buckeye and Ray Guy Award winner B. J. Sander. Ben hit consecutive field goals, alternating from each hash, from 35,40,45,50,55,and 60 yards along with a final 47 yard spiral punt into the wind to beat the best in Ohio and win both 1st place awards.

Ben made his 60 yarder on his first attenpt in the final; the 5 other finalists were each given up to two tries at 60 yards and failed. Even at the end of the day, after hitting well over 100 footballs, Ben's kickoffs all sailled out of the end zone! Winning both competitions I'm sure had something to do with his juices flowing on those kickoffs!

Stultz and Nugent made no adjustments in Ben's technique. Andy Groom, however, taught Ben a 'new" punt known as the "Ozzie", which is an accurate, end over end pooch punt, with good hang time and it stops on a dime to pin a team down inside the 10-20.

I'd be shocked if he didn't. If kickers could be 5 star prospects, I would have to think Ben would be one. I haven't seen a kicker this good for about 3-4 years.

I received this from Ben's dad today:

Ben had a great first game of the season, starting at wide receiver. The Warhawks defeated Dublin Jerome (a newer high school in Brady Quinn's home town of Dublin). The final score was 10-0 in what proved to be a defensive and punting contest. Ben nailed all 6 of his punts as clean spirals for a 40+ yard average and kicked a 46 yard field goal from the left side for a new school record.

He also told me that Ohio State has stated they are very, very interested in Ben. I really hope we follow suit because I think we have a great chance considering Ohio State has 4 kickers and 4 punters on their roster, with 7 of the 8 being sophomores or younger.

The Columbus Dispatch today (9/13/06) released the statistics for Central Ohio and Ben is the Top Punter for all 6 divisions with a 48.3 yard average on 20 punts for 966 yards. He has 6 more punts than his closest competitor and averages nearly 5 yards more per punt. I suspect he also leads the state of Ohio. His goal is to keep pace with the Buck's AJ Trappaso and he's very close with 4 times as many punts. Stats really don't amount to much but it sure is fun to dream.
Update on Ben from his dad. BTW, he has officially received a recruiting letter from ND, too as of last week so he is on the Irish radar!

Burkhart would be only kicker on scholarship when Buchanan's ready.

I've got one of those icky Buckeye feelings about him.
Hey, it's always an uphill battle to beat the home team, especially such a renowned program like Ohio State or not. Like them or not, they're a Top 5 program in the country right now and probably will be for some time with all the talent they pull.

That said, I want this kid in a Gold helmet. You just get that certain kids have that "IT" factor and Ben is one of the handful of kids from 2008 I get that from. The good thing is Weis is on to him and we'll just let the game play itself out from here.

I think we do owe his dad thanks for emailing us weekly updates!

Ben is a natural for Notre Dame..he appears to possess the determination and persistence that guarantees success. And besides all that, he can kick a 59 yard field goal in high school. Like the rest of you, I would love to see this kid end up IRISH.

Recognizing that he wasn’t blessed with the size, speed or strength of many of his sixth-grade classmates, Ben Buchanan sought out a specialty to call his own.

"My dad (Tim) and I sat down and discussed how I could start working really hard at something now so maybe I could excel by the time I got to high school," Buchanan said. "I had played soccer up to that point, so the idea of kicking came up. Dad said, ‘OK. Let’s find somebody to work with you.’ So we just called up (former Ohio State kicker) Dan Stultz on the phone and the rest is history."

Now a 6-foot, 185-pound junior at Westerville Central, Buchanan is regarded as one of the top punters and kickers in Ohio, if not the Midwest. He attained that status with more than just a strong leg.

"He found his thing and just worked and worked and worked at it," Westerville Central coach Bob Fresch said. "When all of us coaches are at the school on Sundays for meetings, there’s Ben out there on his day off working on his kicking and punting."

But Buchanan is keenly aware that many major-college programs are reluctant to burn a scholarship on a specialist. Even the best kickers and punters often are coaxed into walking on and later being awarded scholarship money. That’s why Buchanan from the outset has trained for the trifecta — punting, field goal kicking and kicking off — and has associated himself with the likes of former Buckeyes Stultz, Mike Nugent and Andy Groom, and former Ohio University punter Matt Miller.

"Kicking and punting is like a fraternity all its own, and everyone goes out of the way to help people get better," Buchanan said.

During the summer, Buchanan excelled in camps at Ohio State, Penn State and Notre Dame. At the inaugural Buckeye Kicking Academy, he won the punting and kicking competition. In the latter, he made successive field goals of 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 yards.

"Going to all those camps was a great opportunity to show schools what I have and to get my name out there early enough," he said. "I wanted to put myself in control of my own destiny."

In a game against Jonathan Alder on Sept. 8, Buchanan narrowly missed a 61-yard field goal attempt. The state record is 60 yards by former Ohio State kicker B.J. Sander for Cincinnati Roger Bacon in 1998.

"I’ve told Ben that if we’re near midfield, I won’t hesitate trying a field goal, especially since the high-school rules place the ball at the 20 if a miss reaches the goal line," Fresch said. "He has legitimate 60-yard range, and I don’t take that for granted because a lot of coaches have difficulty finding someone consistent from 30 to 35 yards out, let alone with range of 40 or better."

Buchanan’s punting is no less impressive. He is averaging 41.1 yards per punt, and 60 percent of his kickoffs have gone into the end zone for touchbacks.

"It never ceases to amaze me what this young man is capable of," Fresch said. "He’s so accurate, it’s uncanny."

By the way, despite the windy and rainy conditions Friday night, Ben kicked two field goals including a 54 yard bomb that split the center of the uprights. His longest punt was a 60 yarder.
This is from an email from Ben's father. C'mon staff... get this kid in for some unofficials!

The Ohio High School Athletic Association just posted Ben's 54 yard field goal in the record books. It is the longest field goal made in Ohio this year and among the top 5 longest ever made in Ohio history. Amazingly, it is one of the two longest field goals ever made by a Junior in Ohio High School Football History! Ben remains humble as always and he is fortunate to have such supportive teammates and quality coaches at Central High.
Update on Ben from his dad.

Ben had another solid year as punter, kicker and at receiver. As a punter, he lead all of Central Ohio in punting in all statistical categories in all 6 divisions! He had 54 punts for 2205 yards for ~ 41 yard average. His 41 yard average is huge when you consider he had 28 directional target punts out of bounds or to the sideline preventing returns (15 punts were inside the 20, 3 inside the 10, and 1 (51 yard into the wind) inside the 1 yard line). Amazingly, because he is a fast two-step punter, he had no punts blocked, shanked, nor returned for touchdowns all season.

His 54 yard field goal was a record setter for a Junior in Ohio Prep. History and he also converted field goals from 47, 44, 40, 33 and a 29 yard go ahead 4th quarter game winner. He remains perfect on all extra points now for 19 consecutive games. 80% of his kickoffs went out of the endzone for touchbacks.

He worked just as hard in the classroom this quarter getting a 3.99 GPA in the Honors and Advanced Placement program. Earlier this week, his opposing coaches selected him to the All Ohio Capital Conference squad as the 1st Team Kicker and 1st Team Punter. Ben is the only kicker/punter/specialist ranked in the Top 20 Ohio Prospects (2008) in Bill Kurelic's, Ohio Football Recruiting News Sept., Oct., & Nov., 2006.

wow. the guy has a whole lot of recognition. and it looks like he'd get into nd no problem, even if he wasn't an athlete. impressive.

to waste that talent on OSU!? never! : )

however, OSU does have a pretty good tradition of kickers... it'll be tough to compete with the bucks. but hopefully weis can work his magic.
