Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops says he's dismissing two players from the Sooner football team.

A news release from OU does not name the players, but News 9 sports director Dean Blevins says one player is starting quarterback Rhett Bomar.

The release says an investigation by the university found the two players were paid to work at a private business and were paid for hours they didn't work.

OU said the two are being permanently dismissed and will not be allowed to return to the team at any time.

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione says he's disappointed in the athletes and university President David Boren says he believes Stoops is doing the right thing and he strongly supports the coach.

WOW!!!! Looks like Adrian Peterson is going to have to get that Heisman all by himself now.

Didn't Athlon pick them as their Number One?

Ouch.

I'll give Stoops credit by doing this. Some schools would find ways to sweep this up quick and slap the guys on the wrist.

The Big 12 just got that much more wide open.

If this is true and Stoops did do this I will have to commend him and give him props, that is a very bold move and a good character move by him. OU's stock just took a dive though as Rhett had really developed last year and looked to be turning things around, A Pete is now going to have an uphill battle at the Heisman.

This is freaking huge news. Had it been Ohio State, he would have been suspended for the Rice game.

Wow!! I expected them to have a big comeback year. Bomar started to come along towards the end of the season, huge blow for them.

This increases ND's chances of a National Title. We could have played them in the Fiesta Bowl, now that isn't likely.

And Quinn benefits from this also in that teams will be able to stack the line when they play OU and concentrate on shutting down Adrian Peterson. OU's misfortune is our gain.

From reading their boards their QB situation sounds really bad. Not much depth at that position for them, apparently Thompson who played WR for them last season might switch back to QB, and they have a Juco transfer, but he's considered a project. Not to mention their line isn't great either, I think this kills Peterson's chances at a heisman...

They think they can get away with anything they want. Look at the athletes at the pro level and what they get away with. Great to see Stoops make this move and have some morals. If it was OSU or Virg Tech they would have been suspended for some B.S. game. Stoops put the hammer down and it might cost him the title this year, but still a great move by him!

Actually, considering the infraction, Stoops didn't have much choice. This may have cost them a title shot this year, but any lesser of a punishment may have cost them a lot more down the line.

Wow- what an interesting scenario for Oklahoma! So Bomar is out and the original back up (Thompson) was moved to receiver after Bomar became the starter. And, now their season rest on the arm of a junior transfer Joey Halzle and a freshman walk-on Hays McEachern? A lot of sports analysts had the Sooners in the Championship! That’s some serious revising, and I wonder how much this will impact the play of Peterson’s Heisman Run? Something to think about! If those local news reporters hadn’t published this report, would the Coach have kicked him off the team?
