The Curse of Gary Gray

Laugh this one off if you will, but I found this almost eerie when I started to really think about it. Ever since Gary decommited from USC and reopened his recruiting to include Notre Dame (approxamately July 15th) , our recruiting has taken a pretty large hit (Its the 25th today).

Just take a look at some of the examples I could come up with off the top of my head:

James Wilson- Rumors swirl that he may have verbaled to USC, looks like a strong Trojan lean now.
Ryan Miller- Sounds like a lock for CU.
Arreulious Benn- Backed off the Sept 6 announcement date (Hey! Im not saying he wont be Irish, I just dislike the fact we'll have to wait a few more weeks... it woulda been great momentum for the PSU game to see him commit then)
Greg Little- Farrell now believes hes a UNC lean. Also had a poor showing (according to a Gator writer) at Friday Night Lights.
Ben Martin- Took a trip to tOSU with his mom, many Buckeye posters believe it was to convince his mom tOSU was the place for him, he enjoyed it.
Major Wright- Listed ND is his second group of faves, below Georgia, Miami, and Florida.
Martez Wilson- Crabtree believes that he will officially visit Illinois first because that is his current No. 1 (though I disagree with this statement).

Im sure there are other examples I just cant think of right now. The only really "good" news we've received in 10 days is that Everson Griffen received an offer and will official at ND, but then again he seems so strong a USC lean that it may not matter anyway.

Just my thoughts after a long day.

your way to worried...relax take a deep breath and realize that its only July which is 7 months away from signing day...i dont care which way they "lean" kids are so back and forth, heck im only 23 and i can hardly make up my mind on anything...i have full faith that this years class will be better than last years...it's time for all of us to quit looking at the negative and start focusing on some positives

The conspiracy deepens:

Gary Gray's decommitment made that happen!

Anyone that is on the ledge with recruiting, and there seem to be plenty of you, I'm just going to let you stay there. I've tried talking everyone back but it's no use.

If they take official visits and they're still lukewarm or cold towards ND, then there will be problems. Let's start getting these guys on campus for game days and then we'll see what happens.

Win and the recruits will take care of themselves. I'll take over ledge watch for awhile. Now slowly back away. Please don't jump. Everything is going to be OK.

the sky is starting to fall, if this all holds true it would be a sad day in the irish household. benn, wilson will be irish and don't count out ryan miller just yet. don't forget about chris donald possibly being a UT lean.

I agree. Since he de-committed, War has broken out in the Middle East, Gasoline
is upwards of $3.00 a gallon, power outages across the country and Oprah has
committed to NOT being gay. Coincidence? I think not.

No that just shows that this class might not be as good as everyone said it was going to be.

I'd love to save him, but I can't get to him in time. My car's in the shop getting new brakes. Funny, those brakes were fine until Gary Gray de-commited.

Some of you guys are really overreacting and I think it is about time for football season to start because recruiting is making people nuts lately. Notre Dame is "losing out" anyone yet.

ND has 8 verbals. 14 other guys have committed to other schools who have been offered, the only major disappointments being Marc Tyler and Josh Oglesby. That's not a bad percentage in my book.

Most of those 14 never even took an unofficial visit to South Bend and had their minds made up. I don't get what everyone is all fussy about.

Here is the list of 14. Who on this list was REALLY an ND lean at any point and time? How many of these guys are you really upset about losing out on?

They are all tremendous players, but look at the guys who are still left on the board.

I am upset about losing all those guys. Why wouldn't you be? There are very good players up there.

There are overreactions since this is a slow time of the year for recruiting in general...remember guys, we have 7 months until Signing Day!

When I saw the title of the thread initially, I thought I was seeing a preview of Pirates of the Caribbean III. Arrrrrr

Gary Gray a curse? If we sign him I would say that is a blessing. What I find funny is I have one of these 14 tagged as a decommit that ND may just get. Gary Gray was a complete surprise to me.

Ticket request

Hey guys this is completely off the topic of this post, but I thought this would be one of the best places to look. I am going out to the PSU game and I have tickets, but am looking for 2more. My brother who works in the Academic Athletic office has had a large request for tickets for this game b/c we are from PA. He is still looking but if I can come across someone who has 2 I wouldn't have to bust his balls anymore. Let me know if any of you guys come across anyone looking to dish 2. Thanks.
Go Irish!

Not selling to a guy who has a bro working for PSU AA office. NOT SELLING TO PSU Fans!!
There are no tix in PA and I like it that way. Doom on whoever sells tix to PSU fans who claim to Be IRISH!! I have 2 tix to the ND/PSU game and would never sell my tix, but if I had to - it would never be to a PSU fan!

Speaking of which, only three more student loan payments for me! Unless, of course, the curse of Gary Gray decides I need to pay more.

Thanks Jigga and Svo. I, too, was about to submit a post along those lines. As a long-standing recruitnik, I follow with interest the ups and downs of Notre Dame recruiting, reading every article about developments with a player that has been offered or may be offered. We have an aggressive coaching staff, led by a head coach who has worked tirelessly to visit recruits - remember his May jaunts? (Frankly, I had no doubts about his coaching abilities my one concern when he took the ND job was recruiting. As a NE Patriots fan, I knew he would take the "team first" philosophy that worked so well in Foxborough to the college level); but my one concern when he took the ND job was recruiting). Not only did he exceed my wildest expectations, but he showed that he had learned from his initial experience (Ex. Not waiting a week to examine the films of this year's the Blue & Gold game, but rather leaving immediately to criss-cross the country visiting schools, coaches and [after June 30] athletes. His unfortunate experience with "silent commit" Gerald McCoy last year illustrated the need to have a backup plan, when required by unforseen circumstances.
Since the prime recruiting areas are in the "Sun Belt," there will always be some players who choose to stay close to home and, in many cases, an in-state school. And others who have issues with weather, environs and academics. Despite having "mended fences" with Admissions; Notre Dame simply cannot take players who do not qualify and some who do are scared off by the difficultly in remaining eligible.
Sometimes it isgood to step back and take a deep breathe, expecially those who place too much emphasis on when they read reports on the words or actions of some of these young men or hear second- or third-hand information from a "friend of a friend of the family . . ." And that paranoia does not exist exclusively on Notre Dame fan sites. Its typical at all schools that have a big-time football program. Take Chris Donald, for example, who listed his final two choices to ND and UT. When he announced that he and his family were planning a visit to South Bend earlier this month and then had to change his plans, Notre Dame fans thought that was a bad sign. When a UT fan said they saw him remove a "Vols" sticker from his truck (He later explained that he did it because he was about to wash the vehicle), they thought he surely was about to commit to ND. We can't lose sight of the fact that we are dealing with 17- and 18-year old young men who sometimes can't decide on what they want to eat for breakfast, never mind making a decision as important as where they would like to spend their next four years and how they would like to prepare to spend the remainder of their life (the average pro career lasts only three or four years). Then, too, we sometimes get too carried away with the Four-Star and Five-Star rankings given to these players before they even begin their senior year of high school. Surely, some of them will change, based upon performance. Some players will fall on the list, will others will be added. Just this summer, players who had not previously been mentioned, suddenly began to receive offers and became desirable targets after eye-opening performances at the various summer camps. Finally, this staff has proven that they can recruit the elite player, but also are searching for ones who fit their system and have the character, versatility and attitude they are seeking. They also seem particularly insiteful in projecting the position they might play in the Notre Dame offense or defense that might not necessarily be the one they excelled at in high school. Whenever I tend to become concerned, I ask myself "Who's opinion and judgement do you trust?" My answer is always, "Coach Weis." It worked with the Patriots, I don't see any reason why it won't with Notre Dame. Furthermore, recruiting will easier as his "body of work" increases and continued success will breed further success to the point where recruits who are seeking the perfect balance between education and athletics will be lining up to be part of what is happening at Notre Dame!
