Can one game make or break the Irish recruiting class?

Well, it looks like the Notre Dame vs Michigan game this year is going to absolutely be a big impact on the Class of 2007. That said, do you think a loss in that game could potentially damage our class? Is a win a must have?

I think if we lose more then 2 regular season games it will hurt our recruiting, its put up or shut up time for ND and Coach Weis. Hopefully what we put up is a #1 recruiting haul and a 12th National Championship.

I don't think any loss is going to change the current rising tide of ND football.
You have to believe that the Irish, even if they lose a game or two, will not be blown out by anybody. The days of "Tyrob Davingham" embarassing losses are over.
I think it's more the style of football that these young recruits witness that sways them, rather than who might be the victor.

of course many won't base the decision simply on a single win, but taking a broader perspective leads me to think it is a must win. think of the difference in atmosphere after the game. this game IMO is the biggest of the first half of the season and a loss could spoil and day dreams of glory for these recruits. any recruit still on the fence, like gray, can easily lean to the teams that won big games during their visit. i think a good 38-0 payback drubbing should do the trick. it won't be the end of the world to lose but the potential losses in recruiting make it a must win.

I still think these kids are waiting to see how the Irish come back this year.....we have and so have they seen one hit wonders around ND over the past decade and want to make sure before committing.

I agree kmac,
I think it is extremely important that we win the scum game...the stadium will be electrified and that in itself will create maximum excitement with those attending.

Fortunately when it comes to recruiting, I believe the recruits look at how teams win or lose. Are they playing attractive football? Are the players developing? The ball bounces two ways and ND could get unlucky (see USC last year)...even though they lost this game, many players were impressed as hell with this game.

i feel that they may be looking more at the content of the game rather than the win or a loss factor. look at the USC game last year we had a bunch of kids there and they were really impressed with Notre Dame and we lost that game.

I think I was more getting at is the atmosphere and the experience surrounding the Michigan game firstly. Since it appears that is going to be the Irish big official vist weekend this year with Jimmy Clausen coming in to also personally recruit, I think this weekend will have the greatest impact on the Class of 2007. On top of that, does a win or loss further that experience and sway anyone?

Man, can't it just get here already? I need football... STAT!

IMO, short of a meltdown this year, we'll win 9 or 10 of our games. i don't think recruits will be swayed by those 2-3 losses, regardless of who we lose them to. if they come at the hands of a team outside of the usual suspects, the upside is that we'll have beaten some good teams this year.

more than any single regular season game, i think our bowl game this year will be the most significant game of the season. even with three regular season losses, a win would look like progress to most people (and recruits). a loss would give the appearance of a coach who can't win with a handful of preseaon all-americans and a heisman candidate.

Wins obviously help but one game won't make or break this class.

Considering Carr's record against ND and OSU of the past 5 or 6 years, he should have more riding on the outcome than Weis does. Kids have chosen to go to Ann Arbor despite his stumblings. Do you really expect a wave of ND commitments if Carr loses again?

Or will kids that were headed Ann Arbor way because of easier academics, larger city, more diversity, or because they like ugly helmets just use an ND loss in a justifying soundbit?

"I was born in Michigan and raised a Wolverine fan and while Notre Dame was never really a serious consideration after I found out athletes had to go to class and write their own papers I knew it was a sign from God that Lloyd Carr was a great coach when ND fumbled in their end zone and Michigan recovered for the winning touchdown."

Or will Gary Gray leap to SCAR if ND loses on a last play FG while the Dawgs whip Spurrier by 4 TDs?

Didn't Gordon verbal in the locker room after the MSU game?

Then Gaines, George West and Sergio Brown all verbal later the week after that game?

Well, back to the subject. I think the MI game will be huge for recruits. Should we beat Tech and Penn State, the house will be rocking. I would think we could have as many as 30 recruits for this game alone...many 4 and 5* players.

Now I too am depressed...when do we start camp updates?

Oh, I agree they want to see production. But does anybody who follows college football and is objective about the sport really think there is going to be a drop-off this year and those years to come. I don't think ANYBODY believes that there are any "one-hit-wonders" in the next decade of Notre Dame football.

ITS ALL ABOUT ESCAPING SEPTEMBER WITH NO LOSSES

If we can beat G-Tech,Penn St, Mich, Mich St and Purdue and be 5-0 the floodgates will be open, the middle part of the schedule is favorable and the USC game is good for recruitng almost regardless of what happens.

Svo, asked this way, the ND vs. UM game, I would think, might be more critical for those recruits that are seriously considering these two programs.
Michael Williams, Ronald Johnson, Dionte Allen, Andrew Dailey, etc. (There are more).
Knowing how the stadium is going to be "jacked-up" for this contest for our current squad's benefit, recruits aside, none of our prized visitors will be disappointed with the atmosphere whether they're truely deciding between the two (Williams) or merely riding the coattails of ND's resurgance (Marvin Austin et. al.).

I think a win against Michigan would be icing on the cake. The stadium will be rocking regardless and the recruits will see what kind a atmosphere is at ND on the day of a big game. God forbid a blowout by Michigan, which I doubt, recruits will come away impressed.

Win or lose against anyone, I don't think it has any difference in a recruits eyes. I think when a recruit sees a team playing with alot of confidence, and playing in that type of setting it's far more important then the outcome of a single game. Outcome means very little to a recruit, (although a win would be nice) it's more about the experience and envisioning himself wearing blue and gold. I would say the pre-game and first 15 minutes of a game are far more important then the last 15 minutes of a game for a recruit to gauge if this is the type of place he wants to come to. If he's the Hollywood type, then great we don't need him, Charlie never had TO, or Randy in NE, he really dosen't need that type of talent to win anyways.

Dont be fooled.

Dont be fooled.

If we loose to U.S.C again, that's gonna put a big crimp in a lot's of recruits throat's. Let's be realistic, I follow College Basketball just as hard as I do the Dame ( let's go Redmen). U.S.C. had a commitment to the top player in the country (O.J.Mayo) now think about it, since when U.SC. been a hot bed for basketball. Something going on out there for them to be getting top basketball recruits now. This is a guy from Ohio also, so now U.S.C. is going into Big Ten country and recruiting ball players now. We need to put a boot to there throat or else.

Mayo has backed off of that commitment. He'd be a Bearcat if Huggins were still hanging around the Clifton bars.

Yeah, it's called free housing. Reggie Bush went door-to-door and signed Mayo up.

Both Penn State and Michigan will be tough games. We must win both to have any influence on the recruits sittilng on the fence. The two teams I worry about are Mich. St. and USC but the latter being the last game of the season doesn't hurt us too much if we lose.......but, hopefully, we won't.
