3 stars or not...

3 stars or not...

...this kid looks nasty in his picture. Again, some strenght and technique coaching could make this guy a solid backup in 2 years and pushing for a starting position in 3. Could be the diamond in the rough.

"It's going pretty good," he said. "I've been up here in Indiana visiting my mom. I grew up here before I moved to Durham when I was five so I have a lot of family and friend ties here. The visit to Notre Dame went great. I got to meet the coaches. I love the atmosphere there. It's a great college town. I have loved Notre Dame forever. We got to see the dorms, a few of the players and walked around the town. It reminds me a lot of Chapel Hill, that's what I like about it."
Looks like his interest is legit.

Saunders was originally listed as TE and expressed interest in ND but I don't recall any ND site articles on him. He had 20 catches for 300+ yds/6TD. After Ragone verballed I moved him off my Prospect List and onto my Suspect List.

Then he was listed as TE/DE.

Now Scout has him listed as the #26 DT, 4 Stars. 52 tackles, 4sacks, 14 TFL and 2 forced fumbles at DE.

Rivals lists him as 3 Star DE, 5.7 rating, 6-5 270 4.71 BP 285 28 vertical (Clemson Nike Camp)

At 270 he's a little lighter than most of the other DTs interested in ND (or with ND interest) this year but has a faster 40, 4.71 than most of those: McCray 4.64, Austin 4.83, Gentry 4.78, Trattou (at 2230#) 4.8, Barksdale 4.9, Nicholls 4.9, Blackwell 5.00, Myles Wade (ORE verbal) 5.1, Andre Jones (TX verbal) 5.37, Ian Williams 5.47. Allowing for timing inaccuracies and weight differences, Saunders can run with the big dawgs!

His 28 vertical is also very good for a big man.

I haven't seen any grade/test info on Saunders.

Anybody know how he stands academically?

In his update from Irish Illustrated there is both good and bad news.

Good: Though he lists Clemson, WF, UNC, and Penn State (all offered) as his current leaders, he says Notre Dame would become his favorite with an offer. He claims he may even commit on the spot (ala Paskorz/Neal if/when that offer does come).

Bad: He seems hesitant to switch to DT in college as he does play DE/TE in high school. He better start warming up to the inside because he definitely wont get an offer as a TE and unless we completely whiff on EVERYBODY he won't be Irish as a DE either.

No mention of ND but no surprise on two counts. He was asked for offers and doesn't have one from ND. The author is also from the Gamecockathem.com and has been writing Gary Gray articles.

Saunder (sic) Is Gearing Up For Visit To USC

Riverside (Durham, NC) athlete Wesley Saunders is one of the top overall prospects in the Tar Heel state this year. Saunders is rated as a 4-star prospect on Scout.com, and he is currently listed as the #26 defensive end in the country.
Wesley Saunders, who totaled 52 tackles, 4 sacks, and 14 tackles for loss as a junior, has accumulated scholarship offers from an impressive list of schools.

"So far, it’s Louisville Wake Foreest, (North Carolina, East Carolina South Carolina, Clemson, Penn State, Maryland, and N.C. State."

Saunders had previously claimed North Carolina as his leader, but when asked if he currently had any favorites, Saunders stated that he was opening up his list.

"Probably not. I think everybody is pretty much wide open."

The 6’5, 270 pound man-child said that he is planning on taking a couple of unofficial visits in the near future, one of which will be to South Carolina.

"I’m actually going to ECU tomorrow morning, and Saturday morning I am going to South Carolina with my dad."

Saunders, who also recorded 20 receptions for 308 yards and 6 touchdowns as a tight end last season, was asked to share his thoughts on both North Carolina and South Carolina, who he has liked throughout the recruiting process.

South Carolina - "My dad’s best friend has a son (Kalimba Edwards) who played for South Carolina. He told me a lot about them, and he actually played my position, defensive end. Kalimba Edwards plays for the Lions now, and he’s told me a lot about them (South Carolina). I really like Coach Spurrier from back when he was at Florida too."

North Carolina - "I’m pretty familiar with their campus, and I’ve been going on their campus for the past few years to play basketball with my dad and hang out with my dad’s friend who works there. As far as football, even though they’ve never really had an awesome season, people still follow football a lot around there. There’s pretty good fan support."

The talented jumbo-athlete is hoping to make a decision during his regular season.

"Hopefully by my homecoming game which is in September or October."

Saunders is a rare talent with his frame and versatility. The Tar Heel state star projects as either a defensive lineman or a tight end at the next level, and according to him, he has no preference which position he plays.

"I really don’t have a preference. Some schools are looking at me as a defensive end and some as a tight end."

Saunders, who is also a star basketball player, was asked to describe his strengths as a player on the gridiron.

"On defense, I think I’m pretty good at anticipating plays and reading the offense pretty well, so I think those are my strengths on defense. On offense, I‘d say catching the ball, making defenders miss, and my route running skills."

Saunders, who is being recruited by former Duke assistant Fred Chatham for the Gamecocks, shared what factors will ultimately play into his decision.

"My father’s opinion is important, the school’s academics have got to be great, and I’ve got to have a comfort level with the coaches."

Lastly, Saunders shared both his individual and team goals for his upcoming senior season.

"For the team, we want to make it to the state championship, as always. Personally, I just want to double my stats from last year, if not triple them."

Saunders visited SCAR this weekend and had a great time. He is being recruited as a TE and was also told he could play basketball for them if he so chooses.

A Freebie article

Riverside (Durham, NC) tight end Wesley Saunders has expressed interest in South Carolina throughout the recruiting process, but the Scout.com 4-star prospect made his first visit to Columbia (SC) on Saturday afternoon to get a first hand look at what all the Gamecocks have to offer. The 6’5, 270 pound Saunders thoroughly enjoyed his visit, and he shared his thoughts on his time in Columbia. "It was great. I got there and talked with Coach Chatham. He met us there with my dad. He showed me around the stadium, the facilities, the locker room, the weight room and stuff. It was great. Then he took me on a tour around campus. He showed me, if I came down there, where I would be staying, where I would be eating, the library, and everything like that. It was pretty fun." Wesley Saunders, who totaled 20 receptions for 308 yards and 7 touchdowns last season, said the highlight of his trip was dropping by the annual Steve Spurrier Ladies Clinic and seeing the support by the lady Gamecock fans. "When I got there, they had a women’s football convention going on… That just shows the support that they have down there, and that really blew me away how everything down there was Gamecock this-Gamecock that. So their support was great." he versatile Saunders is capable of playing multiple positions on the college level, but he says the Gamecock coaches know exactly where they hope to utilize his talents. "They told me I’d be playing tight end. You know, I can only trust what they say. Everybody else on Gamecock message boards is saying they will switch me to D-tackle or something like that, but as far as I know, I’ll be playing tight end." Saunders, who is being recruited by former Duke assistant Fred Chatham, enjoyed spending time with several Gamecock coaches while on campus, and he left Columbia with a positive vibe of the South Carolina staff. "They were great. Coach Chatham, I really get along with him. I feel very comfortable with the coaches. I met up with a few of the strength coaches also, and I felt very comfortable around them." The talented jumbo-athlete had maintained South Carolina as one of his top schools even before visiting Columbia, but after seeing everything first hand, Saunders says that the Gamecocks, along with the Tar Heels, are now a notch above the rest. "They were always in the mix, and they are still one of my favorites schools. Everybody’s pretty much wide open, but you can put it up a notch for North Carolina, South Carolina, and those types of schools." Saunders, who runs a 4.7 forty yard dash, said that he is finished with recruiting for the summer and the next order of business will be taking his official visits. "I’m finished for the summer. I believe I’ll be going up to Louisville on September 16, up to Penn State for their home game against Michigan, and I should be going down to South Carolina for their game against Georgia."
