Weis, Irish to team up, share information with Carolina Panthers

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis and his staff are in Charlotte this week to exchange information with Panthers coaches and to attend Carolina's minicamp.

Weis said after Wednesday morning's practice that he and close friend John Fox, the Panthers' coach, planned the time together several months ago.

"When you're coaching in college, you don't share with a college coach; and when you coach in the pros, you don't share with a pro coach," Weis said.

"This is an ideal situation. A lot of things we do and a lot of things they do are the same. ... It's a good marriage where we can try to solve some problems and share some information without passing it on to (another) NFL team or college team."

Fox and Weis have been getting together away from football with their families for years. Fox considered hiring Weis as the Panthers' offensive coordinator in 2002 before Weis decided to stay with the New England Patriots.

Weis helped Tom Brady become one of the NFL's best quarterbacks in New England, and has a new star protege in rising Irish senior Brady Quinn, the early favorite to be next year's No. 1 NFL draft pick.

"He's got all the tools," Weis said of Quinn. "We'll just see how he develops. He's pretty good right now. The reason he came back for another year (instead of turning pro) was to see if he can be seasoned one more year, make sure he's not a one-year wonder, then go on and have himself a nice (NFL) career."

Jake Delhomme's a jackass. And while I have nothing but respect for John Fox's defensive prowess, I do wonder why, when Rex Grossman woke up last season, the Bears started marching on that D. I'm hopeful that it was just a case of "the Bears were that good."

I don't know, I didn't raise him. Fans of other teams hate him, don't respect him. He shows up his opponents on the field and gives them no credit when they beat him.

Are you a Bears fan that didn't like the beat-down in the conference semi-final? One of those Bears fans that were so overconfident based on the previous meeting?

My problem with JD is that, IMO, his receivers 2 seasons ago made him look alot better than he really is. He's definitely a step up from Weinke, Peete and the like, but I don't think he's one of the top QBs in the league. He's too "chuck and duck" for my liking.

When his numbers started declining, fans pretty much stopped being nice about Favre, and said what they really thought. If Eli Manning, Chris Simms, Mark Brunell, or Big Ben had knocked the Bears out of the playoffs, I wouldn't suddenly say they were classless. But Hasselbeck (who's a dick) and Delhomme, yea, if they beat the Bears or not, I'm saying they're jackasses, because they are. After the Bears absolutely dominated Carolina in the regular season, Delhomme didn't give them credit - a bush league, classless move. Then all during the playoff game, and afterwards, he showed up his opponent and was generally disrespectful of one of the great defensive units in the NFL. He's a dirtbag.

Not really. The Bears didn't trash talk anybody all season. The gist of their post-game comments after they beat Carolina was "You hadn't respected us at all coming into this game. Please now respect us." They didn't bash Carolina. Oh, and Carolina lost the game that mattered too, didn't they? But at least when the Bears lost (and won) they did it with class. Not like Delhomme and Co.

Disagree completely. The whole secondary sucked. So did the coaching.

They went from a running team that decided to chuck the ball all over the place (Grossman threw 41 times, Jones had 20 carries) and they chose to stack the box on D to stop the Panther run rather than Steve Smith. I guess DeShuan Foster and Nick Goings were that scary to Ron Rivera.

As a Bears fan, that game sucked on many levels, mainly that they decided to change what they had been doing all year long and that Steve Smith beat them single handedly.

I don't think he's following you around. The discussion turned to something he is passionate about, the Bears, and he disagreed with your opinion. I, too, disagree with what you said because our entire secondary played terrible.

Tillman, Vasher, the whole group was out of position and burnt the entire night. Had they come up with a handful of plays during that game, we win. They didn't. Tillman gets the brunt of the onslaught, but the whole group should share in eating that loss.

If there's a defensive brain I'd like to see picked by Charlie, I'm glad it's John Fox and the Panthers' staff. Their D lines always get a lot of pressure, which was our biggest weakness last season.

Granted, personnel has something to do with it, but it's never a bad idea to evolve for the better.

Carolina has a very good staff. If ND can take anything away from their defense and special teams, it would be worthwhile.

This has become quite common in football. Hell, there were 30-some coaches down at WVU earlier this spring to try and "steal" from Rich Rodgriguez. Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Carolina has Julius Pepper and Dan Morgan and runs a good D program to help bring in a NFL system to the Irish. But I don't like the Panthers he was also visiting Baltimore as well. I hope this does us some good. For landing top Defensive prospects.
