By living in a apartment with Matt Leinart last season and not paying half of the rent, USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett violated NCAA rules, but he should be eligible to play this fall.

The NCAA determined that Jarrett violated the "extra benefits" rule and will have to apply for reinstatement, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans.

Leinart -- the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in NFL draft -- and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Times. Leinart's father paid the difference

"The information submitted by the University of Southern California regarding the living arrangements of two football student-athletes represents a violation of NCAA extra benefit rules," the NCAA said in a statement reported by the Times.

Coach Pete Carroll said he expected the receiver to be reinstated.

"He won't lose a game," Carroll told the Times. University compliance officials looked into whether the football program received an unfair advantage and consulted with the NCAA. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player.

So if he misses 0 games what is the punishment for Jarrett. He won't be invited to P Diddy's Fourth of July barbecue and he must enroll in ballroom dancing? Unbelievable.

i liked this when it was part of the pile of accusations against sc, but come on. it's really not a big deal. the rule to there to prevent booster-like activity, including parents who could very well be a booster and father of a player. but this, in all honesty, seems like many situations i saw when i was in school a couple years ago. parents helping with rent and helping a friend of a less affluent family. he'll have to jump through a couple hoops but he shouldn't face any sanctions.

You know, I just don't agree. The NCAA has these rules in place for a reason. Violating them is what it is... a violation. If they don't want it to be a violation, take it out of the rule book. It's that simple.

true words. i agree that mentality should be used with many violations, but there's an obvious gray area here. it's hard to peel that idea from the fact that jarrett was receiving about $1000 a month in benefits for housing. if matt leinhart were a scrub it would be much harder for people to swallow. they'd think matt's dad was just putting players up by using his worthless son as a shield.

bottom line....it's hard to get worked up when you KNOW the ncaa isn't going to do anything about it due to the gray area argument.

I have a feeling his punishment won't be too harsh. He just wont be invited to Snoop's Backyard Bikini Bash, and will get less photo opportunities with the Lindsay Lohan.

SC cracks me up though.

"Party On!" This is my new USC fight call.

Does anybody know of a college student that stays in a $4000.00/month apartment??? Are you kidding me!?!?

Only in SoCal...where the rich get richer and the poor keep having kids.

The grandeur of the benefit involved is exactly why the violation should be taken seriously. I have several friends that live in SoCal that live in Condos and Apartments and none of them pay anywhere near $4k/month. Most of them do, however, pay up to about $2k/month, most in the $1000-1500/month range.

you have no idea jigga. i went to school at santa clara in the south bay near san jose. no man's land in the bay....$2000 for a tiny one bedroom near campus. it's outrageous EVERYWHERE in cali. i can only imagine a 2br with some square footage, easily 4k. they're prob not even that great, just a gate and a managing firm name attached.

side note...the only advantage to living out here is when you retire your property is worth so much you can move into a mansion anywhere outside of cali, ny, and random places like miami, etc.

Only people from Cali can refer to Miami as a "random place." :) :)

I am in full agreement.

I realize that it's a violation...but CMON.

A dad pays for his kid's apartment and the kid let's his buddy move in for discounted rent.

My god...that's what college is about.

Frankly, Leinart's dad deserves a handshake over this one...

I wonder what the NCAA would have done if this were two ND players rather than USC players??? Bet it would have been different and the NCAA would have come down harder.

It's a violation and there should be punishment of some type. If he's reinstated without any penalty, why have the rule on the books.

Same should go for the push rule. Just take it out of the rule book if your not going to call it.

I have been in a heated discussion this week about "written" and "unwritten" rules in sports. The topic was centered mainly around baseball.

Jigga's Man Law: if it is a rule, write it. If it isn't written, it isn't a rule.
