If Notre Dame wants to start winning head-to-head battles with USC for the elite California prospects, there is one thing Notre Dame must start doing on a consistent basis: Beating SC.

If you haven't, please circle, highlight, star, whatever... Saturday, November 25th on your calendars. That day will make or break many recruiting ties for California prospects in the Class of 2008. Not to mention, the game is in USC's backyward, and could determine a change of heart for some Class of 2007 prospects.

Mark it down, boys.

Lose Austin, win Benn, win Miller or Miller goes to CU. Don't forget James Wilson.

Agreed on Reardon.

Didn't really care either way about Tyler so much because there are so many quality backs. But I really, really wanted Galippo. Although the guy committed on signing day for the class of 06, so I guess we never really had a shot.

I'm always the skeptic on these boards. But I don't see us beating USC for 3 more years. Our defense ain't good enough to beat them this year. NExt year our class will only have a total of 21 seniors and juniors from Ty's much heralded last 2 classes. So I can't see us having that great of a year in 2007 either. And then 2008 will be on the road, where our freshman to be this year will be Jrs., giving us a ray of hope.

And you can flame away at me all you want, because believe me, I hope I am proven wrong.

Well, I do agree that we have many question marks on defense, but we cannot disregard the multiple questions that USC faces on offense as well. They have to replace two of the greatest college football players of all time(in Bush and Leinart) and a great college back(in White) as well, so they have many questions to fill. Last year, we showed we can play with them(albeit in tall grass), this year we will see if we can beat them outright.

We can also take into account that we have two great cornerback prospects coming in(McNeil and Walls) and will probrably get to see some playing time. With their presence, we can only get better. Also, if we can simply generate a pass rush, our defense will improve dramatically.

I agree, but, USC's replacements are all 5 star guys, ours are not. And your referencing McNeil and Walls, who are freshman, whereas USC's running backs will be replaced by a senior, and their QB by a red shirt junior.

my take on it is, is they had what many people considered the greatest cast of players of all time, and we were 0:07 away from beating them...i do not think that there team this year will be as good as the team from last year, since they lose 9 players on a already weak defense, and 4 major players on offense(i am counting winston justice)

I do not care who you replace them with, they will not be anywhere as close to the talent level of those players. And i do believe that we are a better team(albeit on paper) then we were last year, now with some depth. I honestly do not see us losing to USC for a while

How many downs have these two played?

I imagine the answer is not many.

USC has two things going for them in 2006.

1. Their offensive line is very very good. It is good enough to couple with their experienced receiving group and get them a WAC 10 title and put them into the mix for the NC, even with a new starting backfield.

2. The defense will be extremely better, especially the linebacking group. How good are their linebackers? Oscar Lua was a starter last year and the leader of the defense. He might not be starting by the time the opener rolls around. They're that good. Good up front as well and the secondary will be slightly better or equal to last year.

This thing isn't going anywhere until someone in their own conference can compete with them. Until that happens, they're going to rake the entire West Coast in recruiting without much challenge and will get a BCS game every year by winning the automatic conference bid.

UCLA, Oregon, Arizona or Cal needs to step up. Maybe Arizona State could. The other four teams are the dregs.

You referenced that our defense would be better because we got McNeil and Walls.

I'm not going to ask how many downs they have played, but how many college classes have they attended.

Not any.

I find it kind of funny that the outlook on these boards is that McNeil, Walls and Young can come in immediately and have an impact. But a senior running back who has been in USC's system is a question mark?

I really thought UCLA's recruiting would have stepped up more last year. I belive they were ranked somewhere in the 20s, but it should have been better with the seasoni they had.

And besides, the UCLA campus offers everything USC's can, the only difference is that UCLA is right next to Beverly Hills, while USC is right next to South Central LA.

recruiting is going to be very tricky. a couple teams in the pac 10 have started to gain momentum. arizone has gotten a couple surprising recruits and had some good showings last year. ucla could be decent, but you guys are right that usc is taking whoever they want. but the pac 10 being weak helps nd pull top players out of cali too. i dont have any information to back this up, but it seems (due to some recent events) that we're able to get more west coasters than southerns (not including the southeast....we're doing well there too). if we had to compete with 3 more schools out there it could potentially prevent players like clausen from going to college half way across the country.

and jigga....i've never heard anything about south central. is it nicer than beverly hills?

A major difference from what I've been told.

Huge difference. I guess I should have continued on with my post to state that this difference should make UCLA all that much more attractive. Westwood is just absolutely beautiful. I got lost in Bel-Air driving out of the UCLA campus once. Great place to get lost. Although not so great when you drive a 9 year old Mitsu Mirage with a passenger door that don't open. :)

At the same time though, who would you want to party with after the game. That's right, those cars can jump. SC "Party On!"

This is pretty much what you get in big cities.

I have no desire to visit LA. I'd rather see New York.

You only feel that way because maybe you haven't been out to San Francisco.

For all the criticisms that the south central picture is getting, I think it is important you all keep in mind that the guy who appears to be the leader of the group is a graduate of Duke University.

And it appears that his driver is a University of North Carolina graudate, as he is simply standing by the drivers side door.

Playing at SC

You guys are kiddin about South Central...right? The place is litterally a ghetto. You only want to drive by there in the daytime....& you better be driving fast! My point is playing SC at home. I've watched every game on T.V., or in person, for the last 20+ years in L.A. I can't count the number of time that N.D. has been screwed out of victories by ....let's say......poor officiating!!!! It goes back to the 60's!. When you play S.C. at home, you better be twice as good as them, or the ref's will find a way to blow a crucial call. You can laugh if you want, but I've seen it happen way too often.

Very true. I remember watching my Dad blow his top in the early-mid 70's due to the obvious bad calls made at the end of close games!

I've got a great story about me and my cousin flying out to LA once to head over the Vegas. My cousin's buddy drives from Vegas to pick us up out there at LAX. He's driving around, jammering on about how much money he's up since he got out to Vegas a couple of days before us. Lies, of course.

He's driving and driving and we're listening to him, not paying much attention. Well he has no clue where he is or where he's going, which is obvious because I look up in the sky and there are helicopters everywhere. This is almost 11 PM at night, mind you, when traffic isn't exactly thick. Well now I start to notice that the three of us in this car are without question out of place in this neighborhood that we were currently in.

It was Watts.

I smoked my first cigarette in that car that very night once we got on the freeway and headed in the right direction.
