I first came out to Irishenvy the Monday following Tyler Palko's dismantling of Notre Dame on Senior Day in South Bend November of 2004. My frustrations were at an all time high. I didn't necessarily think a head coaching change needed to be made, but clearly there was something lacking within the staff that was allowing such poor performances on the field to take place. A week later, another woodshed bashing from USC had me convinced something needed to be done.
5000 posts later, I marvel at how much things are different. I am as excited about Notre Dame football as I've been in over ten years. New coaching staff, new attitude, new approach to recruiting, new everything. It seems that Notre Dame has been thrust back into the Hate-or-rade stand's number one seller. They are also, more importantly, on the minds and lips of the nation's top recruits. Publications are picking Notre Dame to contend for the 2006 National Championship because whether they are right or wrong it will be a story.
I know that there will be losses in the future, but I'm venturing to say that they won't be of the 31 point variety. Notre Dame, win or lose, will compete. Just as they did under Lou Holtz, they will make the opposition work the full 60 minutes to win the game. And that elusive 12th National Championship is coming soon. And even if it isn't in 2006 ( I don't think it will be) it won't be long.
I am as optimistic as I've been in some time in regards to Notre Dame Football. And to think I first came out here to vent on seeing such a horrible game on that day that seems like such a long time ago. There is plenty to feel good about, but plenty of work left to be done.
And the guy in charge is just the man to do it.
