A couple of fun behind-the-scenes reports I didn't want to see get swept away into the internet ether. First is an account from DomerJD over on NDN, who saw JoePa address a Penn State alumni function.

Before everyone kills me, I didn't pay for the ticket... The ball and chain mentioned to me a few weeks ago that Paterno was going to be in town giving a talk, so I agreed to go because I thought it might be interesting. I am sort of dumb and didn't realize what I was agreeing to.... I get there and there's a thousand people for "A Night With Joe Paterno" sponsored by the PSU Alumni Association.... I felt sort of unclean, and I fully expected that someone would be waiting outside after to revoke my ND alum status.

I don't have much to say about the talk itself, because he sort of rambled and I couldn't really make heads or tails of it.

At the end, he opened it up to questions. I think I was the first person with my hand in the air. I asked him about PSU's intentions of continuing the series against ND beyond 2007- if there had been any discussion at PSU about it, and if he wanted to continue to play ND. (When I was asking my question, he stopped me at one point and yelled at me for talking too fast). He said that he doesn't think the series will continue beyond 2007. His comment was that initially there was some discussion about a six-game series, but that ND has a lot of people who wants to play them and he doesn't think that PSU is going to fit into the schedule.

Then he started talking about how he thinks that the twelve-game season is a terrible idea, and started talking about money and how football has to finance "all fifteen of the women's sports" so if there is going to be an extra game it's going to be a home game. Then he started talking about how ND needs to upgrade their athletic facilities so they need additional home game revenue as well, and made some comment about how "we can't go ask the Church for money for athletic facilities like they can." So I guess the upshot is that from the PSU side it doesn't sound like we're going to be playing them after 2007. I know this is probably not news, but I thought it was interesting to get Paterno's comments on it.

Also, during his talk he made mention of the upcoming season and the first few games. Here's what he said:

Akron: "Don't count them out, they are a tough team and their QB threw for 3000 yards last season."

Notre Dame: "Notre Dame... aren't they a 1-AA school? (laugh from the crowd) No, seriously.... I shouldn't make fun of them, I knew them when they were Catholics. (more laughs from the crowd, as I attempt to shoot laser beams at him out of my eyeballs)"

Ohio State: "That will be a tough game."

I know he was playing to his audience, but I thought it was a bit foolish for a coach to deride a team that is probably going to hand his ass to him on the road as "I-AA." To be fair, he made some pretty unkind comments about some of his own people. And, at one point when two guys were confused about who he had called on to ask a question, he said "It doesn't matter who goes first- you're both ugly!"

I just to let everyone know this little comment pissed me off:

BlueGray quoting JoePa:

No you old bastard you can't ask the church but you can ask the state and state will go 'Deliverance' on the taxpayers. And all we'll be able to do is squeal like a pig. At least my contribution to the Church his voluntary.

This was a quote fom JoPa found at BGS

"Notre Dame... aren't they a 1-AA school?...See you on the field grandpa! It's going to be a shame when a 1-AA team stomps a hole in your head

Wow.

With that revamped defense, he'd better be careful what he says. Even though it is true.

Yours is coming old man. In due time, it is coming and I can guarantee that you and your PSU half-wit fan base won't be laughing after it is over.

Do you think that Charlie would think that this is funny?

Hey, I don't think you can look too much into it. Remember at the Charlie Weis pep rally, he talked about taking down Michigan State and we lost.

However, he would never give bulletin board material saying MSU or any team is a I-AA school... that's just moronic. Every Domer has that pasted in their lockers already, guaranteed.

Joe Pa's life mission has been to take down ND. When Ty was fired he was on espn the next day trashing us, this from a guy who rarely gives interviews. He was also extremely vocal when ND got their TV contract. He's a jealous bastard....

Joe has to hear it all the time from the NY/NJ Irish fan base so he is just bitter towards ND. He ripped ND for charging admission for the Blue and Gold game, This is the second time he has ripped ND for having sub par facilities for female athletes, He coined the term NBC Notre Dame Brodcasting Network right to Lou's face, he has slandered ND to recruits and continues to preach that PSU will "warm up for the big 10 conf games with Akron and ND"
I am so sick of hearing PSU looks forward to traveling to ND and going home with a win.

That's a good point I didn't think of. State schools are ALWAYS better financed than private ones, religiously associated or not (except for maybe the Iveys).

ummmm...ND is pretty rich man. Our endowment is one of the top in the country. ND is swimming in money.

We alumni give tons (well, we try!)

To be honest, that's some good natured ribbing from him. He's from eastern PA...and he acts like it.

I saw his interview on ESPN where he was asked "Is it nice to be back?"

He says "We never went anywhere!!!"

He's not exactly Mr Diplomatic.

You might want to reconsider your wording. Do you really think Idaho State, Louisiana-Monroe, and Northern Michigan are better financed than ND, USC, Duke, etc, etc.?

Charlie has been preaching that you NEVER disrespect your opposition, so no i don't think he thinks it's funny, he probably replaced the banner in the GUG to with a new banner saying we're a 1-AA school courtesy of JoPa

Don't cry for PSU they are swimming in $$$. ND alums may be more generous but there are a lot less of them (PSU enrolls 10,000+ freshman annually at their main campus alone) and they have the never ending well of state dollars.

Simply untrue. I used to work for a large state university, and when the state had a budget crisis, the state universities had budget crises. Funding of private institutions is MUCH more stable.

I think this is like the third time I've agreed with maison blue. (Note to self, see a doctor) But funding for private instutations is much more stable. A good measurement is looking at professor salaries, and you will see that professor salaries at private universities are much higher than public universities.

Hence why so many professors start at public universities, and try to land positions with a private one. You usually don't see private university professors go back down to public universities, unless it is for a dean or chancellor type position.

And another thing, here in California, the University of California has tuition at about $5,000 per student. Compare that to $30,000 per student at a private. That's a 6 to 1 ratio. And the California State University system (Fresno State, San Diego State, etc.) has tution at like $2000 per student. So that's a 15 to 1 ratio.

Berkeley has like 30,000 students, only 3 times as many as ND. I can't see how there could be enough public fundin to make up the difference.

Unless you find that you can suddenly distinguish between "Yellow" and "Maize", unless you start dreaming about a blight that wipes out every buckeye tree in the upper midwest, unless you start to see "skunkbear" as a term of endearment, I wouldn't worry... You don't need a doctor just because you agree with me.

I don't want to bore you with the painful details of PA politics and University. To sum it up briefly PSU has the best of both worlds - they are not part of PA System of Higher Education but they get state funds as if they were part of the system. It is a convoluted and boring to explain but again don't cry for PSU.
