Interesting Choice of opponent. Rumor has it we are scheduling SDSU as well

Why the hell not...That's how Cheaty Mcsweatervest got his 1st NC. Remember, no one said a word about tOSU's strength of schedule at that time(especially with stellar wins over SDSU, The Kent State, and a host of other sub-par universities). Watch and see what happens when ND wins their NC and we have the Dukes and SDSU's on the schedule. Get ready for that HATE PARADE.

If you play who you play and go unbeaten, there really shouldn't be much said about it especially if you're an independent. If it is Nevada or San Diego State, so be it.

It's the same as playing the academies. Everyone has some cream puffs on the schedule.

Oh, I'm sure the flood of hate crap will come of this.

To me, if Nebraska can play I-AAs and the Big Ten puts MAC teams on their early schedule, so what. Nevada and SDSU are DI-A schools that aren't in a BCS conference. Would I rather see ND play BCS schools? Sure. But as long as there are no I-AA teams on the schedule, how the hell are we supposed to know what happens in two or three years down the road?

A home and home with SDSU would be sweet. Gets ND out to Southern California for recruiting.

I would have liked to see ND schedule a school from Texas just to get the recruiting in that hotbed

ND will open the 08' season at home against SDSU, and will open the 09' season at home against Nevada. I wonder how NBC feels about this. I'd rather see NBC put these games on one of their cable affiliate channels because these games will get pitiful ratings. If we want to remain independent we must schedule the best and keep our TV ratings high.

Just because everyone else schedules cream puffs doesn't mean we should, we're not everyone else.

The only problem I have with these games are that they're boring match-ups. Now I look forward to Saturday regardless of who ND is playing, but last year I fell asleep during the BYU game---the first time that had ever happened in a game---and I don't want it to happen again.

So yeah, I'm a bit pissed off to learn that we're playing all the service academies next year. Playing Nevada serves no purpose; it's a cake-walk match with little recruiting value.

Jigga pointed out that the SDSU game does have value where recruiting is concerned and I agree, so I can understand that matchup. Nevada? No. Army? Tradition only. Navy? Tradition only. Air Force? Tradition only. The military academy games are a worthy tradition worth repeating, but only once in a year please.

Who knows though...I am not in favor of playing Nevada or SDSU but by the time we get there they could pull a 2004 Utah and come out of know where and be competitive. I don't think we need to make a habit out of playing schools like this...how about we get Texas back on the schedule and a Ohio State matchup again.

Hey, Nevada was 9-3 last year and won their conference if I'm not mistaken. And they did beat Fresno State, the team that took USC to the wire @ USC. I'm not saying they're OSU, but I'm also not sure they'll be a total push over by the time the game roles around. They were probly better last year than a lot of bottom-rung BCS teams, like Stanford and Syracuse, which were both on ND's schedule last year.

plus, it looks like this might be in part b/c of that last-second scheduling change w/ BYU at the beginning of the season 2 years ago. looks like ND owes Nevada one, so I don't mind a home-and-home series to make up for it.

Exactly. Nevada isn't a creampuff. They have been solidly building a program down there. I'd rather play a Stanford or Syracuse over Nevada.

Hopefully SDSU (in '08) and Nevada (in '09) will still be competitive teams in a few years when we play them. I don't know much about SDSU other than the fact that they went 5-7 last year and have a new head coach this year. And last year Nevada was 9-3, won the WAC, and defeated an improved UCF team in the Hawaii Bowl (great game BTW). But with Charie at the helm and these games 3 and 4 years away and at home I don't think we'll have any problem winning big.

Where this angers me is the way in which it came about. We moved the BYU game around in '04 so we would have a warm-up game before Michigan and Ty assured the administration that he would win. We go on to lose the BYU game and in order to keep our word we have to schedule a game with SDSU and Nevada who had to change their schedules in '04 as well. Now those two schools are no worse, and maybe even better, than some of the BCS opponents we will face like Duke and Syracuse, but I'll be damned if I wish it never came to this. I'd like to see us playing either traditional or BCS opponents and to cut out the aspirational peer games (Duke, Stanford, etc.). And I'd like to see another "tough" game added to our schedule in fertile recruiting territory (Florida, Texas, etc.). This can be hard to plan years in advance, but no one seems to ever penalize you for playing a "down" FSU team for example.

And FWIW, these are one-and-done games. SDSU and Nevada will come to ND for one game but we will not be returning the favor (the right decision IMO). So these games don't really provide any sort of recruiting advantage since any other game we would schedule at home would be nationally broadcast as well.

I don't think this is just about making up for the BYU game though. I think ND is making a concerted effort to dumb down the schedule a bit. Don't expect Duke and Stanford to be going anywhere for awhile.

To be honest, I don't have a problem w/ it. I really see no need to play the toughest schedule every year, b/c I just don't think the program benefits from it anymore. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Michigan, Texas, Navy, OSU, MSU, Purdue, USC, UCLA, Tennessee, FSU, & Penn State is not a good schedule in college football anymore.
