What Does Clausen Mean To Frazier/Jones?

The title pretty much says it all...both those guys were highly touted when they enrolled this year, to me Clausen fits the image of a Ronnie P. lots of hype (when will we hear two Heismans) and yet to take a college snap, to me I would like to see all 3 have an equal chance to win the starting job in '07 and it not just be handed to Clausen. If it is handed to him I would expect one if not both guys to either transfer or in Jones case move positions for good.

Weis won't give anyone anything. He's going to make '07 starting QB earn the job.

Frazer and Jones will have a year to learn from Weis/Vaas and to learn the offense. And don't forget that Frazer is talented. You don't set Pennsylvania passing records by accident.

I think there will be one helluva a fight for the '07 QB job. But right now I'm more interested in the '06 team.

Exactly. Weis has stated on numerous occasions that he doesn't give anything to anyone, and this will be no different.

On top of that, I'm sure Clausen will respect that because his ultimate goal is to become an elite NFL quarterback. If nobody pushed him to make him better, he wouldn't get better... and to stay the same is to fall behind as well.

I look for some intense QB battles in practice because all three of these guys are D1 talents, who all have great skills and physical characteristics. Then theres that pride thing, too. It's about time we got back to being QB U!

I agree there will be some intense battles for the QB job in 07 but at the same time I think either Jones or Frazer will eventually transfer.

Well, someone is going to be the odd man out, there is no doubt about that. However, I hope each respective player comes in with huge chips on their shoulder. That will definitely make it an awesome battle!

It means the 07 spring game will be HUGE!!!!

Yes... quite a luxury to have. We're absolutely loaded at the QB spot.

It would be a mistake for Claussen to come in and doesn't think he's gonna have to work his tail off for Charlie. Jones and Frazier are not patsies and fully came to ND to play. Might bet is that Jones and Clausssen will duke it our for starting position.

Mean to Fraser/Jones? What about Sharpley!!! Did you see his numbers at the BG game. He was 10-12 for well over 100 yards. He is using this spring to his advantage and may set himself up as the number two guy. Fraser and Jones will have to be sharp, when they get here.

Jones said in the Sun Times today that he intends to honor his commitment and think Clausen will be good for ND because he'll attract the top offensive players in 2008 and 2009.

QB battles can have both positive and negative effects, and recent history suggests mixed results. On the one hand, competition can create more refined QBs who have a high level of competitive edge, since they had to battle on their own team to win the job. A good example of this is Matt Leinert, who was NOT suppose to be the starter two years back. John David Booty came in expecting to start as a freshman. On the other hand, QB battles can lead to insecruity and infighting, but more importantly a loss of confidence on all of the QBs. A good example of this is what happened at Tennessee. Ainge is insecure, Schafer is at Ole Miss, and R. Clausen was inconsistent at best. Of course, there is significance in the latter as a Clausen is involved here.

In all likelihood, someone is going to transfer.

Sharpley, Jones, Frazer, Clausen....one or two could end up gone in a few years.

I am disturbed that a lot of the national media are writing off Jones and Frazer already. They're not really tuned into the program very much.

I've heard that Jones could end up being the #2 behind Quinn at some point next year and Frazer could push him for that spot. I've also heard that NFL scouts are already looking at Clausen.

Proceed with caution. We wanted him, we got him. Buckle your seatbelts because this hype machine is going so fast the paint is flying off the doors.

We'll if Clausen can live up to half the hype he's been given he'll be great. Still, Clausen and Jones will not step in the shadows and let Clausen have the spot. One thing worries me is the O Line is going to be very young in 2007 and that might influence what kind of QB you have. Now Jones you would think would be the natural fit with a young offensive line with his run/throw athleticism. Able to run when the pass coverage breaks down, or designed option plays. However, is CW's offensive scheming flexible enough to change that much? Seems like CW likes a prototypical drop back passer.

Now we all know Sharpley looked pretty good at the B&G game, but I think Weis wants to take one of his own and start them as early as possible and mold them into the next Tom Brady.

WOW, are we fat at the QB position. Never thought we would having so much talent at the QB that we wouldn’t know what to do with it. Almost like the Holtz years with running backs.

USC managed to keep all of their QB talent and I believe only lost one kid (He went to UNLV), so I think Notre Dame can keep most of them happy, too.

Thats what Im thinking... Sharpley will more than likely be #2 this season. I think the battle in 07 will be for back up. Behind Sharpley.

Stats can be deceiving.

I was surprised at how good Sharpley looked, but he was by no means great. Still, he was much better than I would have ever anticipated. You have to consider his reads, footwork and all of the rest beyond completion percentage and yards. Grimes and Freeman both pulled passes off of the ground for catches. There were times, though, that Sharpley looked impressive. He's going to factor into all of this just as much. I think he wins the 2 spot this year.

He has to have the inside track in 2007, but when those other three start getting reps...look out. ND is going to have a lot to evaluate.

Next year's spring game is going to be awesome.

Plus, if I'm not mistaken, Sharpley was throwing against the second team defense. He looked good and his passes were crisp, but can he produce against the top D1 defenses in the country? Who knows????

As long there is no controversy about who is #1 - I don't think Weis would let that happen - you can never have too many good QBs

You know what else this means? It means I'm now REALLY disspointed that Oak Lakes cancelled their trip to Cincinnati to play Moeller this season.
