Look up the Texas City ship explosion of 1947.

2,300 TONS of ammonium nitrate on a ship blew up killing about 600 people including all but one of the local fire department. There's a documentary on the incident that plays on the history channel, discovery, and similar stations.

I have read about that(I obviously wasn't alive when it happened) but that was horrific, and the death count was probably higher but there was nothing left of many of the casualties.
