The "it's a conspiracy!" reaction to virtually every major news event has become rather tiresome. To me, it is a significant by-product of the internet, since anyone can make and post a Youtube video about, for example, "controlled demolition of the WTC on 9/11" etc etc. Prior to the popularity of the internet, you didn't see this take place so frequently on nearly this large of a scale (JFK asassination is one example that does come to mind though), as now it can reach so many (naive) people so quickly. To me, it's an advertising ploy - "let's see what I can put out there that will draw attention to me or my 'cause' " - the old addage of "any publicity is good publicity" is a good description of how this works.
Now on the flip side, you obviously have to take what you see/read online with a grain of salt for the same reasons as the conspiracy theories. But in my opinion, if it sounds too sensationalized to be true, then it probably isn't true - kind of like reading just the headline of a National Enquirer article and then looking inside to find the story was not nearly as spectacular as the title made it out to be. Just use a little common sense now and again.
