And he appears to have been enamored of Notre Dame and Fighting Irish coach Charile Weiss. It seems he made the Arkansas commitment with his heart, then started listening to his head about Notre Dame. Comparing the success, the flashy offense and the national exposure at South Bend against what he saw at Fayetteville may have clouded his thinking for awhile.
In fact, he may well have pledged to Notre Dame if there had been a spot open for him at the time. After he had committed to Arkansas, Notre Dame gave out all its available scholarships, including two to nationally-ranked quarterbacks. The Irish didn’t need another. And, if Notre Dame had created an opening for Mustain it could possibly have taken itself out of the picture for Jimmy Clausen, who appears to be the Mustain of next year’s class.
It appears the Irish, who had Clausen on campus last week, are in the thick of the battle for his services.
So, with no offer from the Irish, Mustain dallied with both Tennessee (he’s also known to be a fan of David Cutcliff, who recently took the Vols’ offensive coordinator’s job after turning down the same position at Arkansas) and Alabama, but it’s doubtful he was ever really serious about either of those schools.
