Rivals OL Breakdown

Reviews Sam Young, Stephen Schilling, Daron Rose, Connor Smith, and J'Marcus Webb

Sam Young, OT, 6-8, 302, Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas
Not as athletic as some others, but also much bigger. Uses hands on both run and pass. Needs to improve knee bend, but that isn't unusual for a youngster that tall. Has excellent time clock, plays hard, has a little mean streak. Has a great frame and can dominate one-on-one.

Randy Rodgers' Offensive Line Comparison:
None of these guys are in Schilling's class. You have him rated as the top guard, and I'm not sure what the top grade possible is, but give it to him. He is already a very accomplished player already and think he is going to be a Sunday player. I think that Young and Smith might have inflated 40 times, neither impresses me as a sub 5.0 guy. Rose is probably better than listed. I would rate Young as the second best guy, then Rose. Smith is a guard. Webb needs to really improve his strength and power, but that can come in college. He may have the most potential of any of the Texas high school offensive tackles coming out.

ND gets an A+ here.

Young, Olsen, Wenger, Carufel and Stewart are all top tier players. Webb was first to commit. Once he gets stronger, look out.

Wanted 6, got 6. Quality and quantity. Best O line in America.

When did Young fall behind Schilling?

I've been tracking the Scout position rating of the ND recruits throughout the season. Young actually rose from 4th to 3rd to 2nd.

"None of these guys are in Schilling's class"? Young and Schilling are neck and neck in evaluation and have been all year.

I think that Charlie concentrated on OL this recruiting class because he know's that's what a football team needs to be successful. He went after six guys and got all of them and these guys aren't chumps either. Recruits, five star players are all going to take notice of the line we have. If you can't get a Gerald Mccoy, at least get a guy that can block one.

It was the most pressing need for this class, by far and away.

Now the defensive tackle spot becomes the primary focus for 2006. I hope they take 4 DT and two DE, maybe three.
