The education and ability to play early have to be promising to Young. Haven't seen the depth charts of the others, but they're all big players and will be reckoned with in recruiting.

Young Narrows His List to Four
Mark Wheeler

Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas offensive tackle Sam Young set the recruiting process off to the side while his football season was still in session. Not long after his Raiders lost in the championship game to the Lakeland Drednaughts, he immediately turned his attention to recruiting and promptly narrowed his list to a final four.

The dead period has given Young the opportunity to mull over his college future.

"The coaches have respected the holidays for the most part," said Young. "They're in the middle of their bowl preparations. It's worked out nicely, I've had some time to be alone and concentrate on my decision and think about the direction I want to go in."

With that, Young announced his final four.

"The four I'm interested in are Penn State, Notre Dame, USC and Michigan. All the schools I was considering were great schools. There's not a bad thing you can say about any one of them. I just have a desire to go out of state – spread out a little bit, experience some new things and meet some new people.

"I'm extremely happy with these final four. They are all great academic institutions with incredible football traditions. I don't think I could go wrong with picking any of the four of them."

Young then shared his thoughts on his four finalists.

Southern Cal: "They're on a great run now, but even before this, they've always had a great program. Going out there on my visit it gave me a chance to experience a different atmosphere. I liked the west coast and I liked coach Carroll's style of coaching."

Notre Dame: "It's Notre Dame. After you say that, there isn't a lot more that has to be said. Their rich tradition speaks for itself. I didn't get a chance to go there for an unofficial during the season, but I was there over the summer and Notre Dame has a 'homey' atmosphere. The way the dorms are set up, it's cozy compared to some other campuses. Coach Weis is one of the best offensive coaches in the game. He is unbelievable."

Penn State: "They're one of the teams I grew up watching. I've always been fascinated with them. They have this motto, I'm not sure of it exactly, but it's something like 'Black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game.' That fits me. That fits the team first attitude that I want to be a part of. Happy Valley is a great place and even though they've had a few down years, they have an incredible program and tradition."

Michigan: "They have an unbelievable tradition of winning. It's been a rough year for them, but overall they are in the upper echelon of college football. Coach Carr is as close to what the ideal college coach is as there is. He fits the persona."

Young has decided not to take that fifth official visit. According to him, his visit list consists of Southern Cal (12/16), Notre Dame (1/13), Penn State (1/20) and Michigan (1/27).

However, don't quote him on that order. It may not be totally accurate.

"The Penn State and Notre Dame visits could be switched around," said the 6-foot-8, 300-pound tackle. "I can never remember which one is first out of those two. It might be Penn State first and then Notre Dame. I know Michigan is coming up that last week."

Strangely enough, the only two unofficial visits Young took during the season, were to two colleges who didn't make his finalists. He visited Florida for the Tennessee game and Miami for their match-up with Georgia Tech.

"The funny thing is, out of all the schools recruiting me, I felt like I have the best relationship with the coaches from those two schools. It boiled down to them being instate. It came down to wanting to spread out some and experience new things. Both of those schools would be excellent choices and have many great things going in their favor. For me, right now, I'm better off going out-of-state."

Did anyone else visit Gatorbait's message boards after Sam Young removed Florida from his list? It was hilarious, just hours before, Florida fans had been raving about how he was a Florida lock according to 'their sources', and how he had decided to stay close to home. One of them mentioned that Miami was now their biggest threat.

I guess the family are very big Penn State fans, as Young is or was originally from PA. Could be interesting.

I think it will come down to ND and PSU for Young.

who konws, I read on some message board his family are big Michigan fans, Florida fans were claiming he was a silent lol. Hold your breath with this guy we'll just have to wait and see. PSU worries me, they did a good job holding out and waiting for some of the major recruits. Never count out USC..

Gotta like our chances though, Latina has the best resume in college football, and Young's teammate Wenger is already committed to ND. Cold weather won't be a factor.

There has been word from the Michigan boards that Sam Young is closer to Michigan than most people thought. Now, I'm not a recruiting expert, and I originally thought Sam Young to ND was simply a formality, but the people who predicted Jai Euguene's commitment (which shocked everyone) are now saying that Young is closer to Michigan than originally expected. Now, whenever I participate in the boards, I ask for sources. They have not provided any, which makes this PURE SPECULATION. But it's interesting to note that Carr et al have made last minute pushes on two guys recently (Jai Eugene and Carlos Brown) that have led to committments that came as HUGE SURPRISES. I don't think ND should start talking about how Young is going to fit into Weis' offense before he commits.

I have been feeling a lot less confident about Young the past few days. I did also love it when he dropped UF because I had heard so much s**t being talked by them and how Young was a UF lock. RIIIIIGHT.

If he wants a chance to win a NC he should go to ND though, UM isn't going to be winning any anytime soon. They only have 1/2 of a NC in the past 50 years.

I believe I mentioned in the USA AA thread that Wenger and Young did a lengthy interview on Jamie Newberg's Countdown to Signing which aired on a different network right before the USA AA Bowl. The interview was taped a day or two earlier as they were in their USA AA Bowl Game uniforms sitting in the stadium and it was dark, low light. Wenger and Young were both quite articulate. Young was more soft spoken that I would have expected from a big man. It wasn't bashfulness but confidence as opposed to the brashness
that many high school athletes like to project. He spoke clearly and made his points better than my brief notes indicate. Aside from his athletic skills this is an impressive young man.

Wenger raved about ND, Weis the best, his visit was awesome, he knew them, etc.

The interview was probably 80/20 Young/Wenger as Young is the one yet to declare.

Young mentioned ND, UM, PSU, USC were the finalists.

Newberg asked about a midseason rumor that the 3 OLs from St Augustine were going together as a package. Young noted that, Wenger was at ND and Marcus Gilbert (sp?) verballed to UF but we each have to do what's best for us."

Regarding his final 4:

ND - "Charlie Weis is the best in the business"

UM - "Lloyd Carr is a great coach. (I think he mentioned the OL coach as well.)"

USC - "It's a different kind of place. They run practices differently. They have fun."

PSU - "I like the attitude. No Names. Joe Paterno's a great one."

"I have 3 visits left and plan on taking all of them."

He compliments all the coaches of those schools, but Weis got the best compliment "Charlie Weis is the best in the business" thats a very encouraging quote

Weis is the best in the business. But, Young appears to have a mind of his own. IMO, he would be foolish not to play for CW. All he has to do is look at this years recruits and assume that next years will be even better.

I think he is leaning to PSU and ND. I just hope Weis goes after him even harder now that his list has narrowed.

The improvement the o line showed is evidence that Latina is a good coach. The looked like some of the front fives that played under Holtz...smashmouth mean and nasty.

Young is as good as it gets with offensive tackles and the right tackle spot is open.

Michigan has ten freshmen offensive linemen on their roster. Penn State has several as well. As for USC, I'm simply assuming they have people there that can do the job.

He'll have to compete wherever he goes and that isn't a bad thing, but Notre Dame should really be pushing him based on their needs. He has to know he'll be a four year starter should he come in. Young can beat out Duncan and Turkovich.

I don't think you can compare Eugene to Young, but that may just be me. When I look at Young, I think of a rock... stable, strong and calculated. When I look at Eugene and everything he's been through, he just scares me... So to base Young and his commitment on the indecisive Eugene isn't something that a betting man would do.

Bottom line, however, is whomever gets Young is getting on helluva recruit.

Agreed 100%.

Our line went from being a question mark to being the strength of our team. When our offensive line went, our team did. This speaks volumes of what our line coaches and conditioning programs have done in such a short time.

Throw in the incoming class and I don't think the line is something we're going to have to worry about for some time to come.

LeVoir dropped weight and had a good year. He praised the conditioning program and how much better he felt, how much more solid he was.

Young will need to get stronger, but he's about as physically ready as a HS kid can be for right tackle. And the guys around him for the next four years are going to make him that much better. Once Webb, Carufel, Stewart and Wenger go to Camp Mendoza, watch out world.

Sam Young – Offensive tackle, East squad: If I’ve ever seen a player ready to play today, it is Sam Young (6-8, 300-pounds). When you first set eyes on him, he looks like an upper level college player. Young has a great frame. He has broad shoulders and long arms. He could add some weight, but I’m not certain that he needs to add much. When he does put on pounds in college, it will certainly be pure muscle. He towers over most players.

Young has outstanding technique. He’s quick to set up and get into good blocking position. Good bend at the knees and he moves his feet while working with the defender. He works as well to his outside as he does to the inside and he doesn’t over commit his position. Even against the best high school defenders it doesn’t look like he exerts much effort and he appeared very much in control.

Young is a physical player and he’ll put the defender on his back if they challenge him. Forget about the bull rush, he simply digs in and stones the defender. He was beaten a couple times during practice, but it was rare. For his size, he has outstanding mobility.

On top of being a tremendous football player, Young is intelligent, well spoken, and very personable. Young is has narrowed his choices down to Notre Dame, Penn State, USC and Michigan. He will likely decide close to signing day. Young should be a top 10 national recruit and he is a difference maker.

His visit is this weekend.

No game atmosphere involved in the sales factor.

Forecast calls for snow flurries. According to SC fans, since he's from Florida he's afraid of the cold.

Snow or not, ND sells itself. If he is the intelligent person everyone says he is, he will determine that ND is the place to play! There is no better school, or coaching staff, period.

Don't forget the the NFL teams in the playoffs include NE, CHI, NYG, PITT, DENV, Cinci, SEA -- not exactly warm weather places. If you want to play in the Bigs you need to learn to play cold.

And oh by the way, ND had the best weather on play in for the College Season....when was the last snow storm in South Bend for the season -- the Mirer to Brooks play against PSU.

Bingo. They still have to go to class, though.

With global warming, cold weather won't be much of a factor soon and the recruiting landscape will level.

At least that is what the nightly news is saying, doing what they do best: trying to scare the hell out of Americans.

Yeah but when the next Ice Age arrives, South Bend's gonna be a tough place to play.
