I'd like to think that everyone is pretty familiar with the background on this, but if not; this is the successor to Megaupload, which was taken down last year by the U.S. gov because of pirated content. NZ authorities raided Kim Dotcom's house with 70 officers and some helicopters at the behest of the U.S. government. He is fighting extradition and has won some major court rulings in NZ and he's become a cult hero of the interwebz. Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom wins key court ruling over mansion raids | News | National Post

His new site launched today, the same minute when the U.S. government took down Megaupload a year earlier. It's cloud-based and supposedly 100% legal. Users now get a key to distribute to downloaders so Mega allegedly has no legal issues. They will process copyright claims accordingly.

I've posted this because this is a major factor in the future of the internet and the sharing of information over an interconnected series of tubes.

Looks pretty interesting. I'll have to take a more in-depth look at it later.

Say if I wanted to share the ND/Navy game, would I just upload it there and give out the key to the people who want to download it?

Yes, although I wouldn't do it in a thread. It would have to be in private message or a private social group so you couldn't be linked to copyright infringement. I doubt they would be going after a small-time uploader doing it for the people on this site, but they may, just to make an example. It can get pretty brutal when our government does these things to prove a point, because the punishments are often worse than those for manslaughter, rape, and child abuse. I'm expecting some great dialogue on copyright issues and sentences from our board populace.

Most definitely wouldn't post it here or anywhere else for that matter. I was just wondering how it all would work. Thanks for the info.

From what I understand, and that's some internet hearsay, Dotcom is pretty popular in NZ because of the rulings he's won, correct?

Oh yeah, they love him. I was there when all that stuff was going down.

I may or may not be a gigantic torrenter myself. I may or may not have ~1.7 TB of movies and ~.3 TB of music. :)

I had never heard of megaupload until the story came out a while back. I may or may not have used btjunkie and now use kat.ph.

As for downloading and its ethics. I fully support anyone doing it until the laws start to reflect the times. Downloading is a merely a reaction to Hollywood corporations not wanting to let go of their outdated business model and accept today's environment, a la Netflix. This day and age, you should have access to any media in the world for no more than $50/mo. Cable corporations don't want to accept that their market, like all other before them, have been basically destroyed by the miracle of capitalism and ingenuity.

We had these debates back when VCRs came out, about how illegal it should be to tape TV for later use. Cable corporations wanted them banned as well. They was to dominate the market and price gouge the hell out of people, like they are now with cable service. In depth studies have shown that downloading hasn't cost corporations significant amounts of money, and Switzerland has legalized file sharing because it's actually an economic boost (you need to buy storage, etc); we are still seeing record profits from these corporations in theatre, they're still making more money than ever before.

As a rule, I do not download anything that is in theaters. I do consider that stealing. But the moment it's out on DVD, it's fair game. Studies have shown that people wouldn't go out and buy the DVDs if they couldn't download. Hell I even have Netflix and HBO Go too and still download. Maybe. Oh God I've said too much.

Disregard the men in black trench-coats outside your door. They're from the Census Bureau.

Right? haha

Some useful advice for any downloaders. I know it's risky depending on your network, but it is recommended to have your wiki not password locked, it makes it very difficult for a jury to convict any one person if it's open to the world.

Says all the pedophiles indited by the FBI, etc. over their pedo Tor traffic. Dark net? Not quite.

From my understanding it's a good way to share information from oppressed countries with overbearing governments restricting internet access. There is, no doubt, that despicable demographic present, but that's not what TOR is about.

Technologically, there are other avenues to introduce freedom. Thank goodness good people risk themselves to allow freedom to ring. The Arab spring would not have happened without people on the ground making RF links to allow information to flow as it should: freely.

Tor isn't going to give you anything really, except for a perception of anonymity.

Connections [political] and routing [more political] are more pertinent.

I'm all about Internet freedom and not at all about the Feds prosecuting people for things that don't leave other people bleeding, but fvck a person whose name is "Dotcom." Seriously, I want him in jail just for having that name.

I think I'm glad that I haven't got the slightest idea about whatever the hell it is your talking about.

Our Kindle Fire HD's hooked up wirelessly made me feel like a tech genius.
