I think Manti is lucky that Collin Klein lost. Baylor helped the Irish in more ways than one.
I think Ndamukong Suh had to be there and peaked late. He was the best player that year, but didn't win it.

Jarvis Jones has had a pretty good year, but not really seeing his name getting thrown out much.

I think the lack of a solid qb with a perfect record might open it up.

Jones is a freaking beast and will be a monster in the NFL....but he probably can't spell his name (not a UGA requirement) And plays a different position than Manti

And you're right, this could be one of the weakest QB classes in a while. Especially when the top prospect, Barkley, had a horrible year with the two best WR's in CFB...and the other top prospects are scramblers! LOL....

I can't go on twitter without seeing something about Manti and the Heisman (granted, I am following every ND person I know). But pictures of Magic Johnson in ND gear pulling for Manti, Eddie George, Dickie V, etc.

Plus I listened to the Herbstreit and Fowler podcasts today. They were talking about intangibles with Manti, and said there is no possible way you could quantify what he does for the team. Manti is definitely picking up some steam...

Herbstreit said he would probably be voting for Manziel on the local ESPN radio station yesterday. Said that he would sit down after this weekend and figure out his vote and he was leaning towards Manziel.

He also repeated the stuff about intangibles with Manti, how you can't just look at numbers for him.

That's the thing. It's not soley about the numbers. It's leaned that way and has bascially turned this into a offensive players award...but this year is different.

Insert Geno Smith and I don't disagree.

@TJamesNDI Time of possession factors in too (ND is 11th). Also plays per game. ND defense is in bottom 5 of fewest player per game.

@TJamesNDI A follow-up... Of the nation's top 10 tacklers, nine players for losing teams. Only Toledo had more than 5 wins.

Yeah and how many tackles or big play opportunities do you get when the opposition is going three and out. Wasn't there only like two teams that had drives of over 60 yards?

There is only one person from a top ten defense that has more tackles then Manti and that's Kevin Minter from LSU. I guess that means most players from top 10 defenses stink. Who would've known that all the Heisman candidates (top tacklers) on the defensive side of the ball, play for crappy teams.

I am surprised LSU ranked that high. They gave up some points to some bad teams. On the other hand they played good teams tough.

Help Manti Te'o win Nissan's sponsor vote!!!!

Help Manti Te'o win Nissan's sponsor vote!!!!

If you haven't seen this before, please take a moment to vote for Manti Te'o. Right now he is a close second to Manziel, but we are gaining ground. I am trying to reach more Irish fans. You can vote once daily. If we get him in front, we will have given him the Nissan Heisman vote which counts as one real vote towards the Heisman winner!
Also if some of you regulars could help spread the word on this around and help get Manti more votes it would be appreciated. You may have to create an account to vote if you don't already have one, but it will only take a moment. Here is the link:

Lsu is in the top 10 in Total Defense, but just outside the top 10 in Scoring Defense at 16.9 pts per game

I went to work.

I live in Carlsbad, freakin' New Mexico.

Taking to neutral fans: we're 50/50.

Te'o os picking up steam.

He's gonna win it.

I'm not joshing you guys.

He's bringing home the hardware.

And the team Crystal.

I agree that he's going to win it. I posted earlier he will. There is the silent majority especially the older writers that will propel Teo to the Heisman.

Sounds like a bunch of c0ck and bull - amazing that one would think to look at the number 5.0 tackles by Manti, (one interception), on 51 plays by USC. That is a 12% bad day. Who else plays that way against a prolific defense; with competition from the rest of the defense for picking meat from the bones, like Manti competes against with this kind of brolic defense.

Please note: the poor secondary, once again produced the leading tackler, Mathias Farley, with 9; too bad ND's defensive secondary sucks so bad. (Farley's numbers were because of the game situation. But those Db' CAN play, can't they?)

Older sportswriters, silent majority, intersect with a much more honest and genuine attitude sweeping the country, of which Manti could be the face . . .

That's what I'm saying Bogs.

Anyone care to take on the statistical project of showing Manti stats overall like Bogs showed for just USC. (Tackles + INTs + Forced Fumbles + PBU) / Total defensive plays per game then totaled for the season?

Then we could take our defensive plays per game average (5th best in the country I believe) and extrapolate what his stats would be if that moved toward a more normal plays per game. I suspect it would be astonishing.

That is one big advantage of offensive players, if they are good they get more plays/opportunities since their team keeps the ball. Plus they control who gets to make the play.

Conversely, Manti is avoided by other teams and the good defense creates fewer opportunities for him to make plays. Padding stats is much harder for defensive players.

Remember, our offense also keeps the plays (number of shots by opponents) down.
